    I've never been so upset about a person I have not met personally, dying. I have read McDougall's books from the beginning, way back in the 80s. I was a vegetarian for 40 years as a result, and a vegan since. Never felt better than when I gave up the dairy, and I wish I did it sooner. The McDougalls have been a guiding light through so much of my last several decades for me, and I know many others feel this way, too. We are all waiting for an answer as to how he died, just as we would if he had been our own family member.
    Our hearts go out to his family and friends. We are all right here together, trying to cope with this loss. Mary, please have a public memorial service on-line so we may all participate in our own way. Thank you.

    I agree… Dr McDougall has made my life so so much better, but I didn’t follow his advice about sleep. My body just doesn’t work if I don’t get about 8 hours a day! Otherwise, I think I follow his other advice and am so thankful for him!! 🌱

    John McDougall had a massive stroke at age 18 that paralyzed the left side of his body for 2 weeks in the hospital on CARNIVORE-OMNIVORE diet of bacon, eggs, cheese, meats, etc... at age 22 he was 235 pounds and had abdominal surgery.

    Just heard the news last night, and have been hopping around the internet hoping someone close to Dr. McDougall would comment. Thank you Dr. Lisle. How good speakers keep from crying is something I'll never be able to do. Dr. McDougall was so well loved by so many, he truly was a blessing to mankind. Your discussion on eating meat and corollary efficient or whatever that big word is, (and statistics), to me sums up the great work of Dr. McDougall. A most special man.

      @@ElinorRummingyes, thanks to Dr. McDougal I reconnected in a more positive view the diet of my ancestors, Dr. McDougal was big on that, consuming the food your ancestors ate, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans in the west, and in the east they had rice, lentils, some who could tolerate wheat. I never got sick, on the other hand if I eat meat, I don't feel good.

    Excellent tribute to the best Doctor ever! I found Forks Over knives and John McDougall's videos 13 years ago. At the time as a 58 year old 6 foot male at 310 pounds with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol all terrible I started switching to a Starch based diet and the pounds and numbers started dropping, totally unlike all the other crap diets I tried. At almost 72, I still eat according to the Starch Solution approach. My weight sits comfortably at 190, all my numbers are in the healthy normal range and I take zero meds of any kind. I have Dr. John McDougall to thank for all of that! Note I enjoyed a ton of Dr. Lisle's videos and hugely benefited from learning all about The Pleasure Trap too!

    I believed him and he changed my life. He helped my family. My wife took her mother to Santa Rosa and met him, after I did some research on the best way to help her. Dr. McDougall made important dietary changes for health possible. He had a big heart, he gave everything away, he was an open book. I still had questions I wanted to ask him. I still wanted to thank him for all he did. I’m grief stricken. I will miss him. My condolences to the family. If this is how I feel, I cannot imagine the devastating hole his passing has left in your life and your hearts.

      Yes it’s very sad that something so significant that has happened to the universe is not more widely recognized and honored. I have two friends that introduced me to Dr. McDougall‘s work 20+ years ago. I’m indebted to them and to him for sharing this fabulous way of life. When I became a vegan, my family laughed at me and made jokes about me. That was painful but this is a tremendously more painful loss. Rest in peace Dr. McDougall. May you all know the peace and love of our God and Father, Mary, Heather, and McDougall family.

    John Mcdougall saved my life (and so many others) I was experimenting with low carb ketosis diets in the early 2000s right up until a heart attack in 2006! I really needed help, went to NY to visit Dr. Esselstyn who started me off on a journey that took me to Santa Rosa and John on a quest for health. 18 years of restored health! Priceless, powerful. His teaching will live on. (Doug, you taught us to never give up, John built a great team! Thanks.)

    • @6stringcodger450

      @@danpan001 I am very sure it was the ketosis diet, my cholesterol had risen to extreme levels (over 400 total over several 3 mo. samples).
      Statins only put a minor dent into those numbers. My physician had cautioned me about the ketosis/Atkins thing, but I was able to get by w/no diabetes drugs. Blood sugar normalized so quickly w/low-carb, I wanted to stay with it...until my infarction and a prognosis that was bleak and depressing. The cardiologist told me it was time to get my finances in order, time was not on my side. It was a 2 and half year experiment that turned out poorly. It was difficult to give up meat/dairy/oil, but everything just got better, including the diabetes and cholesterol. This is just me, a study of one, an anecdote. It simply worked for me. Glad I met McDougal all those years ago. I have had some minor disagreements with his recommendations, but not the main ideas.

I find it funny that Doug mentioned sleep, because before I went to a McDougall seminar in 1992, I saw his book at a bookstore and saw his theory on sleep and though he was way, way out there. Learning that the magnificent Dr. John McDougall has died is a gut punch, though death is so normal. I have said that Dr. McDougall was my personal physician, but he never ever saw me and really didn't need to because I didn't have any physical problems due to following his recommendations -- this I believe, anyway! He was involved in probably the most difficult work there is in this world -- hoping to change the Standard American Diet to a healthful one. He was brilliant, funny, generous and sometimes prickly, and the example of integrity. Thank you, Dr. McDougall, from the bottom of our healthy hearts.

    Of course your argument for personal health is terrific, its weakness comes with the industrialization of animal products can wipe out our civilization completely. Thank you for your tribute to Dr. John Mcdougall and your acknowledgement of T. Collin Campbell. Love your work as well.

    I think Dr. Lisle may be mistaken on the diet only making a difference of 3% in lifespan. This might have been true with the older generations (those who are old now) which is the only thing we can measure. But back when these people were younger, obesity, diabetes, etc. was much, much less common among young people than it is today. I think the likely difference in lifespan, decades from now, will be found to be closer to 10%.

    I loved Dr. McDougall and was gutted at his loss. That being said, he was a saint, and God had a time for him. He fulfilled the love and health that was set out for him. When he reached the point that God set out for him, he was taken home. We will all grieve, but Dr. McDougall was the champ in his life time that saved so many. So grateful for him and his teachings.

    By the way, thank you for reminding us again and this is something you already shared many times and I think people cannot hear enough, something that really helped me recalibrate my mind around the span of human life: 80 +or- 10 years
    and I see this because a lot of us have this fairytale idea of 100 years…. which can be great sometimes but it’s pretty unlikely and can be very disappointing when hit by chronic disease as I’ve seen it in my family….
    After all one can do its best and live a fruitful, precious life and then surrender to one’s fate….

    • @Hikari7775
      @Hikari7775 3 місяці тому

      @@gon7155 First of all, veganism isn't a diet, it's an ethical stance against animal cruelty and exploitation. Secondly, you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to use Dr McDougall's death as anti vegan propaganda. If you call dying in your sleep at 77 after having a stroke at 18 followed by a full life dedicated to helping people the result of a "deteriorating diet", then sign me up, that sounds great! Much better than all the meat eaters ending up at the hospital or six feet under after a heart attack at 50.

    • @HollenbergR
      @HollenbergR 3 місяці тому

      @@gon7155deteriorating? Not at all. Not much better than SAD if it's highly processed vegan junk food, but the whole starch- based diet Dr McDougall taught is full of vitality and health-promoting benefits.
      Being vegan or not only adds or decreases life span by 2-4 years, but it's the quality of those years that shows the true benefits- will your last decade be riddled with chronic disease, doctors/ hospitals/ care facilities, medications, and limited mobility and mental facilities, or will you be fully capable of pursuing your passions all the way to the end and only die suddenly when you've reached your genetic potential, like Dr McDougall?

    Thank you to Dr. Lisle for that exquisite explanation of the difference between evolution’s optimization and a diet aimed for the best health and longevity of an individual. Your statement that longevity is basically 80 years plus or minus 10 years is a wake up call, and especially your statement that optimal diet makes a difference of only about 3 years. But I am happy to hear that proper diet and lifestyle makes a 10 to 15 year difference in disability. That’s significant. I was shocked that Dr. McDougall lived only to age 77 - I fully expected him to reach 100+!! I guess I do need to rethink my assumption that anyone careful enough with their diet and lifestyle will make it to 100+. I am 72, plant based for 15 years, work out hard at a gym for at least an hour every 3 days, and my doctor told me I have the blood pressure of a healthy 18 year old. I limit my eating to a 6-hour window per day for 18 hours of daily fasting. Take no meds. I am enjoying my retirement, and I am shooting for 100+. If I don’t make it that long, I’ll be pissed off. Anyway I’m still alive, so “so far so good”.

    • @flyshacker
      @flyshacker 3 місяці тому

      @@ClassicJukeboxBand How do you know it didn’t work for McDougall? Maybe he would have died 10 years earlier without his diet. Remember he did have a stroke at age 18 that left him with a paralyzed foot for life. And that was when he ate a Standard American Diet. What about all the thousands of studies with empirical evidence for plant-based eating? Of course anything can be right or wrong, but wouldn’t you go with the overwhelming evidence?
