I've never been so upset about a person I have not met personally, dying. I have read McDougall's books from the beginning, way back in the 80s. I was a vegetarian for 40 years as a result, and a vegan since. Never felt better than when I gave up the dairy, and I wish I did it sooner. The McDougalls have been a guiding light through so much of my last several decades for me, and I know many others feel this way, too. We are all waiting for an answer as to how he died, just as we would if he had been our own family member.
Our hearts go out to his family and friends. We are all right here together, trying to cope with this loss. Mary, please have a public memorial service on-line so we may all participate in our own way. Thank you.
Please tell us, from Heather maybe, when is his service, we need to attend with his fans, some like me since 1983.
A Genuine Loving Caring man who lived to help others . Loved his book and podcast with his wonderful family. He was Unafraid to speak truth and confront the medical system. He was one in a million
I agree… Dr McDougall has made my life so so much better, but I didn’t follow his advice about sleep. My body just doesn’t work if I don’t get about 8 hours a day! Otherwise, I think I follow his other advice and am so thankful for him!! 🌱
John McDougall had a massive stroke at age 18 that paralyzed the left side of his body for 2 weeks in the hospital on CARNIVORE-OMNIVORE diet of bacon, eggs, cheese, meats, etc... at age 22 he was 235 pounds and had abdominal surgery.
Thank you for this episode. All McDougallers needed it. We will all miss Dr. McDougall.
Miss him so much already 😢 He is a great man , and iam thankful for all the work he did ❤️
Yes thank you for doing that video. I am so sure that so many of us who have greatly Benefited from the work Dr. McDougall did and are devastated because we had no idea he was sick and we look forward every day to watching his videos and watching our numbers improve and we are all saddened by this loss and the loss for his family and friends. He is and forever will be my hero. My sister in law texted me as she was crying her eyes out with grief. So we really appreciate you guys for taking the time to share a moment with us. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤
respect
Much respect to you and also to John McDougall. I've learned so much from you and the other greats in this healthy living arena. Thank you for all you do. :)
McDougallers
Just heard the news last night, and have been hopping around the internet hoping someone close to Dr. McDougall would comment. Thank you Dr. Lisle. How good speakers keep from crying is something I'll never be able to do. Dr. McDougall was so well loved by so many, he truly was a blessing to mankind. Your discussion on eating meat and corollary efficient or whatever that big word is, (and statistics), to me sums up the great work of Dr. McDougall. A most special man.
Dr McDougall is my hero. Forever. ❤
Chef A.J. will probably do a tribute to Dr. Mcdougall with all the plant based doctors she has interviewed.

I found Dr. McDougal theu CHEF AJ, he made alot of sense.
@@ElinorRummingyes, thanks to Dr. McDougal I reconnected in a more positive view the diet of my ancestors, Dr. McDougal was big on that, consuming the food your ancestors ate, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans in the west, and in the east they had rice, lentils, some who could tolerate wheat. I never got sick, on the other hand if I eat meat, I don't feel good.
I am mourning like I lost a family member. He saved my life and my dad’s life as well. It is because of this man that we are both alive and in good enough health to enjoy life to the fullest. There are not enough words of appreciation. ❤
Excellent tribute to the best Doctor ever! I found Forks Over knives and John McDougall's videos 13 years ago. At the time as a 58 year old 6 foot male at 310 pounds with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol all terrible I started switching to a Starch based diet and the pounds and numbers started dropping, totally unlike all the other crap diets I tried. At almost 72, I still eat according to the Starch Solution approach. My weight sits comfortably at 190, all my numbers are in the healthy normal range and I take zero meds of any kind. I have Dr. John McDougall to thank for all of that! Note I enjoyed a ton of Dr. Lisle's videos and hugely benefited from learning all about The Pleasure Trap too!
Thanks for this great interview. He's been my hero. "The truth don't change." - Dr. John McDougall.
I’m am shocked over here in the UK. I’m crying. Sad cannot believe it. One of the best. One of the first books I bought when becoming Plant Based. I always looked at him as family. May he rest in Peace. Sympathies to his wife Mary and family.
John McDougall MD saved my health. What a wonderful man. He saved my health. Rest in peace
My brother in law had open heart surgery in 1988. His doctor gave him the McDougall Plan. He never read it or followed it. I did. It changed my life. I am the lone vegan in my family. He changed my life. He had courage and character. Thank you Dr. mcDougall
I have never in my life wanted something to be fake news as when I saw this posted on their UA-cam channel. I thought, its been hacked! So sorry I was wrong. What a huge hole you leave but an incredible legacy. God bless you and your family and lets continue the purpose you so passionately fought for.xx
Thank you for this prompt broadcast. I know Dr lisle worked with Dr McDougall over several decades and wondered how he felt about this very sad loss. But truly a life lived in its fullness and a legacy of elevating the health of thousands. I shall eat a potato and remember him 💔
I eat a potato every morning too for breakfast.
I believed him and he changed my life. He helped my family. My wife took her mother to Santa Rosa and met him, after I did some research on the best way to help her. Dr. McDougall made important dietary changes for health possible. He had a big heart, he gave everything away, he was an open book. I still had questions I wanted to ask him. I still wanted to thank him for all he did. I’m grief stricken. I will miss him. My condolences to the family. If this is how I feel, I cannot imagine the devastating hole his passing has left in your life and your hearts.
Dr McDougall made the world a better place. He did great good for countless people. God bless him.
I'm just shocked by this news... very sad. Dr John McDougall will never be replaced. It is because of him that I started taking are of my health in regards to what I eat!! What a tragic loss. I still cannot believe it.
I agree😥
I feel sad too, but he helped many and it was his time. His legacy and spirit will live on. ❤
I celebrate Dr McDougalls life. His was a tremendously productive meaningful wonderful life! He touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. So grateful that we have the legacy of his work.
The bell of truth always came from him when he spoke. That’s what I will always remember about him. I have more respect for him than almost anyone I can think of. Gone too soon.
I finally figured out I am mourning within… and nobody in my circles knew him or listened to him, so I’m grateful for Dr. Lisle’s sharing and framing and conclusions. Dr. McDougall taught me a lot, even as far as him being his ornery self, living himself in his skin, having me question and ask questions. Blessings on him from Here to Eternity.
I agree! I've been heartbroken since finding out this sad news. And since I have no one to mourn with or even share the news because no one in my life would understand, I've just had to keep my grief to myself. So grateful for this video (thank you Dr. Lisle!) and to be able to take in all of the nice comments in tribute to Dr. McDougall.
He saved my health through his books and video s. My highest weight was 370 lbs at 6 foot 3. Very sad to lose him. I weigh 213 lb now . He saved my health
Yes it’s very sad that something so significant that has happened to the universe is not more widely recognized and honored. I have two friends that introduced me to Dr. McDougall‘s work 20+ years ago. I’m indebted to them and to him for sharing this fabulous way of life. When I became a vegan, my family laughed at me and made jokes about me. That was painful but this is a tremendously more painful loss. Rest in peace Dr. McDougall. May you all know the peace and love of our God and Father, Mary, Heather, and McDougall family.
Beautiful tribute. Thank you, Dr. Lisle.
I feel like I lost a part of myself to that level he influenced me and my lifestyle. His integrity and mind remained intact till the end of his life as you can watch his recent videos with his wife and daughter. Dr. McDougall was an absolute legend, icon, stalwart . He was a pioneer in starch movement. Will miss him immensely. Love you Dr. John McDougall and thank you for enlightening people about the truth. Rest in peace
Dr McDougall was a great person. I liked up to him and watched his videos very frequently. I follow his eating plan plus the china study and feel great. Thank you so much for making this video. I hioe to see more videos abd tributes dedicated to Dr. John McDougall. ❤️
Thank you - Dr Lisle helped me to process my grief by hearing these stories and thoughts about Dr M! Great episode
"😢 a chord in our lives just got cut.... " Doug Lisle
Beautiful episode. So sorry about Dr McDougall. He was a true hero.
Shocked and deeply saddened. McDougall was a great man to say the least. My heart is broken.
Thank you for this, it means a lot. Such a loss for all of us that really cared about Dr McDougall, admired him and appreciate his work so much.
Dr. McDougall was a beacon of courage and truth. His love for us all will be missed. I will miss his meticulously researched presentations on Chef AJ’s show.
Thank you Dr. Lisle for this thoughtful sharing about Dr. McDougall. It’s a balm for all of us who feel close to him and Mary through their work. When you shared about how a tether has been severed a little I felt that you put words to what I was feeling too. And I especially loved your words about seizing the moment and making sure we’re doing what we need to be doing and not wasting our time on everything else. Much respect for you and this podcast. Thank you.
Doctor John Mcdougall has changed my life and the life of partner for the better some 9 years ago. Thanks to him we discovered the WFPB community and all other great doctors in the community including Doctor Lisle. We are eternally thankful to John Mcdougall. May his legacy live on forever and be light upon the generations to come. 🥔🥔🥔
A wonderful tribute to Dr. John McDougall. Thank you also for your tribute to Dr. T. Colin Campbell by saying that the three books of his that you named are the canon. Yes!
Thank you. His passing hurts so much. Never met him but have watched, listened, and read for some years. All I know is that I’ve been crying since learning.
Condolences to Dr McDougall’s family, friends, colleagues, patients and fans. He reached so many people and left the world a better place for having been here. We will miss him.
Thank you Dr. Lisle, this was a great episode surrounded around Dr McDougall. A fitting remembrance.
Lovely hearing your stories about Dr Mcdougall. Both you and him have changed my life in so many ways. It was obvious he had great integrity, which is one of the reasons I admire him so much. He spoke the truth in a world full of lies and propaganda. His message will live on forever. What a great gift he was to the world.
His work will live on. May he rest in peace
John Mcdougall saved my life (and so many others) I was experimenting with low carb ketosis diets in the early 2000s right up until a heart attack in 2006! I really needed help, went to NY to visit Dr. Esselstyn who started me off on a journey that took me to Santa Rosa and John on a quest for health. 18 years of restored health! Priceless, powerful. His teaching will live on. (Doug, you taught us to never give up, John built a great team! Thanks.)
So you think the low carb diet caused your heart attack? Did you do any blood work that showed problems with your health while you were on low carb diet?
@@danpan001 I am very sure it was the ketosis diet, my cholesterol had risen to extreme levels (over 400 total over several 3 mo. samples).
Statins only put a minor dent into those numbers. My physician had cautioned me about the ketosis/Atkins thing, but I was able to get by w/no diabetes drugs. Blood sugar normalized so quickly w/low-carb, I wanted to stay with it...until my infarction and a prognosis that was bleak and depressing. The cardiologist told me it was time to get my finances in order, time was not on my side. It was a 2 and half year experiment that turned out poorly. It was difficult to give up meat/dairy/oil, but everything just got better, including the diabetes and cholesterol. This is just me, a study of one, an anecdote. It simply worked for me. Glad I met McDougal all those years ago. I have had some minor disagreements with his recommendations, but not the main ideas.
@@6stringcodger450excellent!
What an honor to know about Dr. McDougall. Every Sunday evening I tuned in. Legend, Pioneer, hero seems fitting. RIP Dr. McDougall.
I will really miss him
I am devastated upon hearing of his passing. He was a hero to me and so many others.
Thank you for this remembrance, Dr. Lisle and Nathan. It’s what we all need right now, helping us deal with our grief. ❤
He was a good physician that really cared about people and the earth. My hope is that his friends and family will continue to spread his message.
I realised that I saw him as a part of my immediate community when I read the news. I was seeking for exactly this. Coming together and listening or talking about him, even if it’s on youtube. You guys are real to me, in my life. I’ve followed McDougall since 2015.
Sad to hear of Dr Mcdougall passing. I treasure his books and he will be a great loss to the plant based nation.
We are thinking of his wife Mary and her family in particular at this time.
He will be greatly missed.
Chris James. (UK)
😢 i will miss Doctor Mcdougall, I have few of his books 📚, love this doctor mcdougall and Mary and Jill and whole family, praying Doctor Mcdougall 🙏 ❤ family 😢😢😢
Lovely tribute. RIP, Dr. McDougall.
We are so lucky to have lived a life where we have access to listening to Dr. McDougall and Dr Lisle, Esselstyn etc. Dr. McDougall left huge amounts of knowledge for us to absorb if we are intelligent enough to do so. Dr Lisle has done a wonderful tribute here....I am so glad to have found and listenened to this. I need to go out now and get me a copy of The Pleasure Trap and go from there. Thank you both for this Podcast!
beautiful tribute to a great doctor-healer.
Thank you Dr Lyle and Dr Nathan for this moving tribute. It’s only been 24 hours since I heard of Dr McDougall’s passing and I feel my world has been forever changed. He was a giant in the WFPB world and helped thousands of people improve their health. I depended on his teachings for truthfulness and being science and experience backed. May he rest in Peace and deep condolences to the McDougall Family.

Same 💞
Once again I am writing. I am from India, a lady, 67 years old. I heard Doc McDougall's lecture in Oct, 2021 and understood his message. I turned starch based vegan from starch based vegetarian and reduced oil in my cooking.
I am a long distance runner and won the bronze in the TCS World 10 km race last year.
I have no fear of chest pain and leg pain now.
Just finished a 10 km run in 63 minutes in tribute of this great legend.
Rest In Peace Dr McDougall, you were a legend. My condolences to his family.
Thank you. So sad. Mourning his passing. He was such live wire. To survive a Lacunar stroke by 66 years is remarkable. His gift to the to world is his teachings on how to eat healthily and thrive under extraordinary circumstances. Despite this debilitating stroke at 19 years young he lived 5 years longer than the author of the Aitkins Keto diet.
18 years young.
I am so shocked and sad on Dr John Mcdougall passing. He was a great inspiration to many. He will be missed.
My condolences to his family.
I first found The Starch Solution at the public library while looking for a more healthy way of eating and was amazed when I read it. I immediately followed the diet and incredible things happened. It was life changing. I miss him.
Thank you so much, Dr. Doug.🙏🏻💗 I loved everything you said … very comforting. And reading some of the comments I keep thinking how Dr. McDougall would love to be able to take in all of this kindness and admiration and respect and love.🥹 Still feeling disbelief and sadness for Dr. McDougall and for us all, as life does end for every living thing.😔
I'm so sad but so glad he was a big part of my healthy journey in my early 70s
Thank you John for educating and inspiring us all these years, for courageously fighting for truth! Your spirit will live on forever!
Thank you. We missed and loved Dr McDougall in our little vegan world.
What a wonderful and very moving episode about the living and the leaving of a beautiful man who touched many lives and certainly touched mine and my family’s!
A shock for sure as I received their email , a loss as John McDougall leaves a big empty space ….that feels larger than life….my deepest condolences and love to his family and Wife and friends and colleagues and all who loved and love him !
He for sure woke me up years ago and forced me through his immense body of work, integrity and passion to look at dietary lifestyle as a pillar to rebuild my health ….
To a life fully filled and a mission accomplished which could have gone on forever as we so need giants like him !
❤ my deepest gratitude to him and you guys ❤
This news was a genuine shock to me 😢 it is clear that he made an enormous impact on our “sub world” and that certainly reverberated through the bigger world as well ❤. I seems clear from Dr Lisle’s face that this loss is hard for him too.
Thank you for this nice tribute. Dr McDougall is definitely on my Mount Rushmore. A man of impeccable character. I find it funny that Doug mentioned sleep, because before I went to a McDougall seminar in 1992, I saw his book at a bookstore and saw his theory on sleep and though he was way, way out there. Then I went to an all-day seminar with John & Mary and I was hooked and I've been hooked ever since. RIP Dr McDougall.
We were undeservedly blessed to have had McDougall fighting for us.
Thank you Dr. Lisle. What a beautiful tribute to Dr. McDougall. I didn’t know it was possible, but I have even more respect for Dr McDougall after listening to this.
Thank you for this tribute ❤ He was a legend
Learning that the magnificent Dr. John McDougall has died is a gut punch, though death is so normal. I have said that Dr. McDougall was my personal physician, but he never ever saw me and really didn't need to because I didn't have any physical problems due to following his recommendations -- this I believe, anyway! He was involved in probably the most difficult work there is in this world -- hoping to change the Standard American Diet to a healthful one. He was brilliant, funny, generous and sometimes prickly, and the example of integrity. Thank you, Dr. McDougall, from the bottom of our healthy hearts.
What sad news. In 2021 Oct, I heard him talk on Chef A J's show. I turned vegan from vegetarian due to him. I thankj him immensely for all the good work he has done.
Of course your argument for personal health is terrific, its weakness comes with the industrialization of animal products can wipe out our civilization completely. Thank you for your tribute to Dr. John Mcdougall and your acknowledgement of T. Collin Campbell. Love your work as well.
What a amazing Dr with so much knowledge and a kind good person he will be missed, learn from him the last 5 years
To the preciousness of Life ❤
I think Dr. Lisle may be mistaken on the diet only making a difference of 3% in lifespan. This might have been true with the older generations (those who are old now) which is the only thing we can measure. But back when these people were younger, obesity, diabetes, etc. was much, much less common among young people than it is today. I think the likely difference in lifespan, decades from now, will be found to be closer to 10%.
Lots of vegans have been getting cancer
I am heart broken with John McDougall’s death . He changed my life . I did not know there was an accident 8-10 years ago that caused him some problems . It is amazing he kept going
I am always curious about people who die “peacefully “ in their sleep. What actually happens to the body? Not speaking about Dr McDougall specifically, but generally, does the heart stop?
Wow. Excellent eulogy. Thank you 💖
Omg I just listened to him the other day I’m in shock!!!!!
Such a shock to hear of his passing. I had enormous respect for Dr McDougall
Thank you and Dr Lisle for this wonderful tribute to Dr McDougall
What a beautiful tribute. I really needed that, thank you. John McDougall changed my life. May he rest in peace knowing none of us will let his important work be forgotten. ♥
He was a very brilliant and smart warrior . RIP dr McDougall
McDougall rest in peace 🙏
Thank You John McDougall!🍠🕊️This world will be better place because of him. He was the world!❤️🌽
❤ He was and always will be, a HERO ❤ RIP ❤
Dr McDougall was my hero for many years. This is very sad news, my sincere condolences. And yet I want to ask how come no one talks about the covid vaccines he took?
The most wonderful, honest, caring, direct, honourable etc man who did everything possible to help people get well as drug free as possible…. Such an icon
My sincere sympathy to his lovely wife Mary and their family who must be grieving terribly
Thank you both!
Nathan Pritikin reversed heart disease before Ornish did, but maybe didn't have angiographic proof.
May his memories be eternal 😢
So sad for us and the healthful community to hear one of the GOATS has passed into the next life.
😢 May you rest in peace & power, Dr. McDougall. Thank you for all that you've done for me and others.
I loved Dr. McDougall and was gutted at his loss. That being said, he was a saint, and God had a time for him. He fulfilled the love and health that was set out for him. When he reached the point that God set out for him, he was taken home. We will all grieve, but Dr. McDougall was the champ in his life time that saved so many. So grateful for him and his teachings.
Indeed. I hope he knew Jesus.
@@bethdeason5002he didnt have to know jesus.jesus knew him and was a good servent of God.doing good job for God.he has a place in heaven God had it ready for him.
By the way, thank you for reminding us again and this is something you already shared many times and I think people cannot hear enough, something that really helped me recalibrate my mind around the span of human life: 80 +or- 10 years
and I see this because a lot of us have this fairytale idea of 100 years…. which can be great sometimes but it’s pretty unlikely and can be very disappointing when hit by chronic disease as I’ve seen it in my family….
After all one can do its best and live a fruitful, precious life and then surrender to one’s fate….
So veganism isn't all that huh? Pretty deteriorating diet
@@gon7155 First of all, veganism isn't a diet, it's an ethical stance against animal cruelty and exploitation. Secondly, you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to use Dr McDougall's death as anti vegan propaganda. If you call dying in your sleep at 77 after having a stroke at 18 followed by a full life dedicated to helping people the result of a "deteriorating diet", then sign me up, that sounds great! Much better than all the meat eaters ending up at the hospital or six feet under after a heart attack at 50.
@@gon7155deteriorating? Not at all. Not much better than SAD if it's highly processed vegan junk food, but the whole starch- based diet Dr McDougall taught is full of vitality and health-promoting benefits.
Being vegan or not only adds or decreases life span by 2-4 years, but it's the quality of those years that shows the true benefits- will your last decade be riddled with chronic disease, doctors/ hospitals/ care facilities, medications, and limited mobility and mental facilities, or will you be fully capable of pursuing your passions all the way to the end and only die suddenly when you've reached your genetic potential, like Dr McDougall?
So sad to hear. I discovered him only 2 years ago and felt a great connection with him listening to his podcasts etc. Part of my family. The emptiness I feel knowing I won’t be hearing him anymore..What a loss. Condolences to his family. His message will remain with me forever and I will continue to pass it forward as he always wished. All the way from Australia .
Thanks so much for sharing stories and thoughts on John Mcdougall
This is heartbreaking news. He was an amazing human who changed my life and helped so many. Thank you so much for this tribute.
McDougall, Campbell, Ornish & Esselstyn 🌱🌱🌱🌱
I am do sad...but I really want to know why. The family has a right to keep silent...but the silence really damages his legacy...his detractors are already jumping on this.
Very nice tribute to Dr John McDougall and his legacy. Thank you for your thoughtfulness Dr Doug Lisle.
Thank you for this tribute to John McDougall. He deserved every single accolate and compliment. He was the truest of healers. My grief I feel from this loss is profound.
Thank you to Dr. Lisle for that exquisite explanation of the difference between evolution’s optimization and a diet aimed for the best health and longevity of an individual. Your statement that longevity is basically 80 years plus or minus 10 years is a wake up call, and especially your statement that optimal diet makes a difference of only about 3 years. But I am happy to hear that proper diet and lifestyle makes a 10 to 15 year difference in disability. That’s significant. I was shocked that Dr. McDougall lived only to age 77 - I fully expected him to reach 100+!! I guess I do need to rethink my assumption that anyone careful enough with their diet and lifestyle will make it to 100+. I am 72, plant based for 15 years, work out hard at a gym for at least an hour every 3 days, and my doctor told me I have the blood pressure of a healthy 18 year old. I limit my eating to a 6-hour window per day for 18 hours of daily fasting. Take no meds. I am enjoying my retirement, and I am shooting for 100+. If I don’t make it that long, I’ll be pissed off. Anyway I’m still alive, so “so far so good”.
Is it possible the advice is wrong? Didn’t work for Mcdougall…
@@ClassicJukeboxBand How do you know it didn’t work for McDougall? Maybe he would have died 10 years earlier without his diet. Remember he did have a stroke at age 18 that left him with a paralyzed foot for life. And that was when he ate a Standard American Diet. What about all the thousands of studies with empirical evidence for plant-based eating? Of course anything can be right or wrong, but wouldn’t you go with the overwhelming evidence?
Very moving tribute, thank you.
My heart goes out to Mary,he loved her so much and often spoke of his love and respect for her.
Thank you so much for that lovely tribute Dr. Lisle. It was great to hear those inside stories about our dear Dr. MacDougall.
