      Smart cars are well protected against rust, but with the obvious exception of the plastic body panels, there are areas that are prone to spots of rust that if left unattended to can get quite nasty. Most of the metalwork is covered up with plastic, including the entire underside, this helps to protect against rust but it also allows rust to spread unnoticed. On early W450 models it’s well worth checking under the rear plastic inner arches and behind the nose cone, which is actually very easy to remove.

      Thank you!
      I’ve fancied one of these for years and now, after my old 57 plate BMW 320d is costing me an arm & a leg with repairs, I am at the point where I need reliability, economy and a car with low insurance. The only worry I have is my Mum who uses a disability Walker and I’m wondering if this will fit in the back of a Smart Passion.

      @@beverleypearson2646 As much as I love Smart cars, I don’t see them as an ideal car for anyone who has to pay for repairs. The early models are great fun and make an ideal second car, but in truth are not reliable enough, later Smart cars have less character and the right model can be very reliable but it’s just too much of a compromise for most owners. The most reliable small cars that are cheap and economical run tend to have less character, but if you are paying too much for maintenance/repairs on a 2007 320d I honestly cannot see an early Smart being much better. Parts are cheaper but labour rates are the same even for a smaller car and in many cases there is more labour involved in repairs and servicing of the smart. Having said all that, and at the risk of contradicting myself, a good low mileage Smart from a dealer with a proper warranty can be good, but in my honest opinion it’s too risky to buy one private IF you can’t do repairs yourself. The motor trade often get a poor reputation, but good and honest motor traders are much safer than private sellers when it comes to cars like this. If I wanted a cheap reliable small car I’d be looking at low mileage Daihatsu, the best small cars ever made but very boring and bland in most cases.

    The fogging of the windows is probably due to the water leaking from the rear quarter windows, the door seals, or both. The steering noise is a combination of the steering UJ needing grease and the lower ball joint needing replacement. These are all minor and inexpensive jobs, but my advice to any buyer of a Smart car is to buy one that has been maintained properly, because so much damage can be done if other areas of maintenance are neglected. I watched this video before buying a 450, and it was very useful, it’s a great review video and I’m sure whoever bought this car loved it after the issues were sorted.

      @andrewstones2921 3 роки тому

      @@simonbrooks8792 that’s a nice easy job, it’s really impossible to diagnose noises from a UA-cam video. I guess any issues with the steering uj would be diagnosed as much by feel as by sound. Many people feel the smart is difficult to work on, but I have found them fairly easy and I really like those earlier model Smart as they have so much character

    Hi ! Really enjoyed this detailed review. Thank you for such lovely work. I have been daily driving motorbikes since 2008 (in Barcelona), and now wish to slowly move away from the 2 wheels, and into a small car ( I thought I could never be: an ex-motorcyclist.). A used smart car seems to be a rational decision and your video has certainly provided a powerful insight of what it is to drive one. Best of luck in Italy, I have further subscribed :)

    Good review from back in 2018 - Great little cars these. I am sure its sold and moved on now but what I would say is that it should not be making that sound on the steering no amount of geese will sort that, no car should ever make that sound
    I would say it needs a steering column universal joint as they get deformed and it sounds like the same problem I had

    Hi great review, thanks for the video. I want to buy a 2010 smart for two petrol, I've been seeing some other videos that says it's not a good idea since smart is now only producing electric vehicles and the spare parts of older models could cost a fortune.
