They are food for the sky and woods You can tell right away if you got Flatlanders moving in cuz they bring along their kittens thinking they're part of the family, when they're just food for the woods.
As a farmer with about 80 chickens, I can relate. Ironically, all the chicken had to do was stay in the coop....out of instinct it flew out. And so there's yet again MORE work to do: get some netting over the coop and this will also help stop hawks or other airborne predators from getting in. On a good note, I'm surprised and happy the hen survived, usually the dog/coyote/fox will violently shake the chicken to break it's neck and then run away with the dead chicken....or at least the teeth would cause some serious wounds. You got lucky, glad you responded to what was likely a lot of noise coming from the chicken coop. And btw, don't waste any money on coyote urine or many of the bullshit deterrents on the market. Just cover the coop and/or get yourself a good dog. Although, in the middle of the night our small dog heard noise and went out to investigate.....he got bit really good by the coyote and it punctured his abdominal cavity, the vet bill was $11,000 so make sure you get a dog that's at least 20% larger than a coyote or fox.
I concur, coyotes (and foxes to an extent) in urban environments are happy to prey on any pet small enough that they come across. Don't let funny videos of cats chasing predators away on youtube cloud your judgment, cats and small dogs are easily on the menu.

Before I finished covering the end section after expanding the yard, one of my hens flew out over the 5' fencing and another tried and failed. It was because a group of crows had flown into my yard and when one hen caught eye one crow swooping away, she instinctively ran in the same direction, then flew up and out. Another one tried to do the same. I didn't even know she'd done it until I looked out my kitchen window and saw her, so I checked my yard cam.

I leave my back door open and I can hear the chickens(or crows) making a certain noise when a predator is near and I run out in my bare feet to chase them away. I went outside for a totally unrelated reason a few days ago and the crows were divebombing a fox to get him out of the area.

This is exactly why I got a large dog run with a roof on it for the chicken outdoor run, because I was afraid my hens would be dumb in a panic and fly out right into danger. They just don't have the common sense to stay inside when they see a predator.
In NZ there are no wild predators. When I was a kid 50's 60's. An occasional dog. My dad always said the hedgehogs stole eggs but I am not sure. We had no cover on the chicken run. And we'd let them out each morning. Had to clip one wing to stop them flying. Damned chickens no one would kill them or eat them so they just stayed there for 10-12 years. Then there were the ducks. A male muscovy turned up. A mistake to get a male duck a "companion." We had to ship about 30 of those off. Then the pheasant came from somewhere. It did not last. It attacked my dad.
I'm happy the chicken is ok and I probably would have done the exact same thing as the lady did, but I have to admit that I just about pissed myself when I saw the lady running and screaming, "Let go of my chicken."
I’ve seen videos of a fox or hawk getting overwhelmed by several angry roosters. You should get a few to defend your feathery friends. Or maybe a large guard dog.

Mama to the rescue! Also I think there could be a solution to fox issues, which is a wolf urine spray, that when you use it on certain areas, it deters predators like foxes. Now with hawks, I think some netting atop of the side there would stop it from dive bombing. Other than that I’m glad you scared that fox, poor chicken was probably terrified when you got her from behind that stump. Hopefully she wasn’t injured by the fox clamping it’s jaws on her.

I just had a fox in my garden and my chickens were free ranging first time we had a fox in our garden in 2 yrs of chickens . I heard one chicken do the egg song and then in went into a freaking out chicken noise so I looked out the back door and I see a fox right next to my chickens looking at me I ran out with no shoes on during a downpour and called the girls and they came running to me, then past me on to our rubbish bins over the fence, the fox ran off and I got the girls into my house I'm so worried now about them as once a fox knows their there it's just a matter of time . They will only be able to free range when I'm out there now 😪.
U need to mesh-roof that wire fence around the coop to stop them jumping out in panic next time. The hen didn't realise she was perfectly safe behind the fence before jumping out.
The chickens we bred to lay eggs or for meat are either too slow or had lost instinct to escape predators. The closer the chicken breeds are to the wild jungle fowl, the better they can escape. A wild jungle fowl would have immediately taken off to a tree or high structure, not running around like that. My game chickens did the same thing. They took to the tree or the roof so easily.
I don't supposed chickens an be trained to get tot he roof. I would pop them up there to let them know there's a safe haven and get them down with food. 😄
I did the same thing with a coyote..........it was very early, our turkeys were free roamers. Our bathroom has a window thank God and I heard a commotion, I looked out the window and saw this big coyote trying to get a good grip on one of the turkies and blood was all over......There I go running outside in a t-shirt and undies screaming at this coyote and growled out the words "drop my turkey" as I charged him.......he dropped it and ran.........my heart was pounding as I was patching up my turkey, she was making cooing noises it was awful.
A fox grabbed my favourite hen in font of my eyes. I tried to leap in the fox but I fell on my face in the mud. The hen escaped and hid under a bush. But she died two days later from her injuries.
I don’t know if I should cry or laugh, T! These close calls are so scary but thank goodness she is ok. “Let go of my chicken” 😄
