To hear robbie at the end say "we gotta pack, we gotta go" is touching. This was robbie and Martin's song, they played it each time they said goodbye to one another. Martin says that he doesn't need to play that one anymore.

I was a nanny for a young family and the dad fought cancer for almost a year. He passed and he had selected two Van Morrison songs for his memorial: Quiet Here and Days Like This. He was only 39. RIP Michael and to anyone facing hardship and loss, I send my love. Van Morrison is a treasure.

The most beautiful song called Piper at the Gates of Dawn from the album The Healing game I had previously chosen to be played at my memorial service but when my sister-in-law passed away far too young after a huge battle with cancer I had to give it to her and it was played just before we all sat down at the table to say a prayer after the burial I hope van the man knows how much his art means to all of us

Omg I know that song is art in the highest. I've loved Van since I was in middle school. My Dear cousin reminds me all the time how much I loved Brown eyed girl after first hearing it. All my brothers love Van. I remember watching a VHS tape I made of Van of A&E. My brother Rick said "look at that guy he's in a trance when he sings" Rick loved him. I don't think they get any better, the Great Irish Rover. My Dad liked Van Morrison a lot.

    • @marbleman52
      @marbleman52 2 роки тому +3

Christopher Sliter....Yes, there is a special bonding between a father and his daughter...at least in a 'normal' family, meaning a father is not a drug addict or an abusive alcoholic or some other destructive life, but where love and compassion is the normal condition. I have two kids, a daughter and a son. My daughter was born first and I well remember when she was just a few weeks old that one night she slept on my chest. In fact, I bonded with my daughter at the hospital when she was born. My wife caught a staph infection after giving birth and couldn't hold her so I would come there at feeding time and go into the nursery, gown up, and hold my daughter and feed her. From then on, and even though my wife was a good mother and took excellent care of our daughter, my daughter preferred being with me.
I now have a 15 year "young" ( I hate using the term 'old' ) granddaughter, and we also have a very strong bond.
So...fathers & daughters tend to have a special bond, and mothers & sons also seem to have a special bond. It is interesting how that is.

I’ve had that very look on my face many a time listening to “Tupelo Honey” for the last 50 years. It is one of the songs that make you wish you had been blessed with the talent to write it yourself. Van Morrison is an absolute treasure whose catalogue is comparable to any songwriter of the past half century. I wish I’d gotten to see him live during the 70s, but missed the few opportunities to catch his show. One of the great musical regrets of my life.

@@ryanm776 Joe C select songs I don't like and then I don't really like his vocals. Van is so much more of a genius, has a much better voice, and writes songs , something outside the capabilities of Joe C. Van is top 20 all time. I don't like the originals of with a little help from my friends? or She came in through the bathroom window, so i guess that Joe is losing before he starts. Maybe Up where we Belong was a nice duet. The first two songs must come out of Paul McC as I think his later Beatle work is atrocious. Songs like Let it Be, Hey Jude, do nothing for me and I dislike them. Abbey Road is just an OK album. George Martin disliked it a lot. See I admit what will never get me a Heart like you got. :) Good luck.

There is listening to music and there is getting lost in music...Robbie was getting lost, absorbing every word and every note. I am now 60 years old and I wouldn't trade the time I grew up in for ANYTHING. Back the 1970s, we all got lost in the music we loved whether it was Van Morrison, The Band, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Dylan or anyone else. The world is a colder place now, a divided place and yes, even sometimes an evil place. We all need to put on some old music once in a while, close our eyes and remember what a much gentler world felt like when music was made for the heart and for the soul. I have my own Tupelo Honey in the next room, my very own Angel of the first degree. I think I'll go wrap my arms around her and tell her how much I love her. She's the best damn thing that's ever happened to me...
You can't stop us on the road to freedom.
You can't keep us 'cause our eyes can see...
Remember something folks, freedom is the most important thing we have. If you feel it slipping away, fight for it like it's your last day on earth because someday it will be. Live free or die. They can't keep us because our eyes can see...
    Peace

Last thing that Mr Robertson seems to say, “it’s dawn, we gotta pack, we gotta go”…
It’d be nice to have the transcription of the text of this footage.
In any case, it’s such a great momentum, I’d say that Martin Scorsese knew the tune that Mr Robbie Robertson was about to play as this was something he’d done before, a kind of ritual to express his admiration for Van the man at certain moments.
The whole scene shows the brightness and creativity, the energy of those times and the strength of youth.

Tupelo Honey came out in '71. Given how transfixed they were listening to the song, I thought at first they were listening to an advance release of the album, but this looks like it was filmed sometime after The Last Waltz was recorded and filmed at Winterland, Thanksgiving 1976. My guess is that the footage is from a break in post production work on The Las Waltz at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. At about this time it dawned on Scorsese that apart from his extraordinary talents as a writer and musician, Robertson also had movie star good looks. Soon thereafter Carney was made as a vehicle for Robertson. Although the film is now largely forgotten, it really wasn't bad. I believe it was Robbie's last attempt at an acting gig. By contrast The Last Waltz, as a document of a time and of a Band that we'll never see again, will live forever. Hanging out at Shangri-La, getting high and sailing into the mystic with Van the Man had to be near the top of cool things to do in California circa 1977, although you wouldn't find it in a brochure or with an App. With a beautiful blonde no less.

Scorsese and Robertson Lived together for a couple of years in LA around this time. This is def mid 70's. I can imagine Scorsese not being familiar with the song. Robertson would have been quite familiar with it as well as most of Van Morrisons work. Robertson always had a flair for the dramatic when a camera was present so he may have been overacting a bit but then again its such a great song that anyone would have that reaction no matter how many times they heard it. Coke and booze also can put one in the mood.

What about a biopic of the Replacements "Trouble Boys". Much more interesting but they might not fill many movie theaters. But they are the best band that ever was. Neil Yung, Bob Dylan, Replacements are the 3 "definites" on mt rushmore of rock and I would put van there too . OK to be PC how about Michael Jackson. Maybe the Smiths? The Band didn't do many albums and their last one sucked. Neil, Dylan, have done hundreds - well too many sure. 50 great songs by Neil, 45 by Dylan, 40 by the Replacements, 35 by van Morrison.
