mckavitt13 somebody asked me what I think about Andras Schiff playing and this what I responded with, it basically explains everything Terrible. Like mostly every other modern pianist (Pollini, Perahia, and others). My absolute favorite Bach interpreter. His playing is so clear and precise. He NEVER uses the sostenuto pedal to create legato phrasing. This is so tempting because their are so many complex contrapuntal lines occurring simultaneously. And many lesser performers fall victim to this trap. But Schiff understands that pedaling will only blur and muddy the lines. So he uses his fingering to do all of this. And it is extraordinarily difficult. But he always makes it look so effortless. I have mad respect for this man and his consummate artistry. 🙏
I allow myself to respond since your comment is focused on it but he does use the pedal to create legato while playing bach, like at 13:30 or in his live performances of the whole WTC, Goldbergs, Italian concerto..., like everyone who's playing Bach on a piano (Gould, Richter, Pogorelich, Ashkenazy,...), you can see/hear it for Gould playing the Emajor fugue book 2 or the AoF on youtube you'll see his right foot working. Maybe what you meant was pressing the pedal and hold it for a few seconds which can indeed hurt the clarity in Bach but I never heard such pedaling except for HJ Lim live performance of WTC1 or Feinberg recordings and I wouldn't call them lesser pianists. Cheers

How does Maestro Schiff make everything seem so effortless? What an incredible performance - inspirational and humbling all at once!! BRAVO!!!!
perfect technic makes it look effortless.
I wonder if most people know how much effort it takes to learn Bach's keyboard music, let alone play it with this level of mastery. The dedication behind the scenes by Schiff is the real triumph.
The sweat visible at 34:28 and 34:49 indicates it may not be entirely effortless
No.6 Gigue at 1:55:44
Phenomenal
Какую же прекрасную память надо иметь, чтоб так прекрасно сыграть это сложнейшее сочинение, слушать это исполнение - высшее наслаждение для души.💐💐💐
I still haven't found any other pianist but Schiff that plays with such elegance, good taste, flow and artistry. Of all pianistic interpretations of Bach's keyboard music, I stay with Schiff.
@@reginacoelimanilla9084 i know them all, and stick to Schiffs interpretation. Some of the artists you name shine with either neurosis or narcissism, in their oral expression as well in interviews. Schiff's work expresses sincere humility, and its therefore more beautiful.
@@GabrielLeni I like Schiff the best out of that lineup, as well. How do you feel about Gould, though?
@@blindiris22 one just can't love Gould. He is beyond genius in many respects. I still enjoy Schiff better than Gould. I think that Schiff captures the humble, religious and deep spirit of Bach's music. Gould's Bach is almost a mystical approach, he seemed to be captured in an intellectual trance and his unique interpretation of what Bach had to sound like. I like Tatiana Nikolayeva's Bach too.
Martha Argerich, Glenn Gould... better than this.
@@chorizoalegre7387 not even close. As much as I appreciate their playing, they are/were always over the top. You can hear their personality in their playing. Andras, on the contrary, is in an eternal quest for balance, elegance and reverence, which I think expreses the will and spirit of Bach more accurately.
Listening to classical music can be a form of meditation. It's a way to escape the chaos of the modern world and find a sense of serenity and balance in the intricate melodies and harmonies.
Сарабанды Баховских сюит цепляют какие-то струны души, о которых как будто до этого ничего не знал... Невероятная, мистериальная музыка 🙏🏼
Schiff's endurance is insane
Don't forget the audience's as well, but seriously I love Bach.
When we listen to a high-quality instrumentalist like Andras, there is nothing left but to be ecstatic at such accuracy and skill for those of us who love classical music.
It always gets me how great their memories must be to play for 2 straight hours without sheet music.
@Don P Indeed. And the French Suites, and the Partitas, and the Golberg Variations as well.
it's all a bit depressing for the rest of us mortals, really!
Richard James most classical pianist I saw on a Bach documentary said they practice book 1 and 2 for a few hours each day . Since they are scales and harmonies
Training and muscle memory.
Trust me, his memory is one of the less remarkable things about his piano playing.
I was going to comment, but I've already forgotten what I was about to say!
Einfach wundervoll!
I absolutely love how Anras Schiff plays Bach. I could listen to him all day long, every day of the year!
You just could? I do! :)
How are you doing today my name is Bryan cooker
And I do!

Schiff is my favourite interpreter of Bach. He seems to go into a trance, and the magic just flows
I am lost in a trance listening to this masterpiece! Well done.
Sir Andras Schiff's performance of Bach's English Suites is at an apex where technical prowess, incredible control and serenity intersect to create a revelation. I've just discovered these pieces and know that I will be listening to them many times hence, they're just so ultimately enjoyable and immensely calming to me. Thank God for Sir Andras Schiff and Johann Sebastian Bach!
A true musician/pianist in all respects and pleasure to hear!
I feel this is one of the best BACH interpretation, from Maestro Andrass Schiff. I couldnt hold my tears fell in several moment. And BACH will always be my favourite composer - his composition is timeless. always 'life', always new
Gardika Gigih Music Absolutely right! Especially Nō 6 is incredible. All best wishes, a Bach - loving lute player
The world's finest pianist, consistently superb playing . His Bach is untouchable and he gets better with age.
and saw him in chicago conducting and playing bach keyboard concerto #5 AND Beethovenn cto #1...stunning performance!!
Wow, thanks for posting this video! I attended this concert at the Music Academy of Budapest, February 2003. Remembering it so vividly ever since.
You listened directly this concert? Wa....... I really envy you.😲
@@4493-sungjy I did, as young man, I was 23, feeling in heaven with Bach's music. Afer the concert, I took the night postal train from Budapest back to my city. It was freezing cold. I remember everything so vividly, which is no wonder after this miracle. And as far as I know, this was the last time Schiff had played in Budapest. He has not returned to his home country ever since. :(
@@zsoltszomora78 It was after 2011 that he refused to put his feet in Hungary. As @Sheila Novitz summarized here: ua-cam.com/video/WfdjHyciN3E/v-deo.html&lc=UgyWj7VWAJRBxdYLbLF4AaABAg.9_27dIq54VW9_qNQPXE0_R
Wow, thank you! This throws me right back about 15 years ago when I was there attending. One of my most memorable concert experiences ever. His absence is so depressing for the hungarian cultural world.
How are you doing today my name is Bryan
Wow, how I wish I were there too. What was it like live? Did you overhear what others in attendance thought of the concert ?
A man at the top of his game !
😃
I usually prefer listening to Bach on harpsichord but this is so beautiful and precise it's an honor to listen to. He not only understands what he plays but makes us understand exactly what is going on at each second. He'll be a go-to for referencing Bach for the piano from now on.
Yes I agree, can only be surpassed... by Andras himself playing it on the harpsichord !!
Agreed 😊
Andras Schiff is a master as regards Bach performance on piano. This pianist has an astounding memory to remember all the English Suites !!!!!!
This concert , The Music delivered by Sir Andras Schiff absolutely brings me to a state of AWE ! Can't stop listening to his performance. What a Master of Classical Piano and, Bach.
Thank you for posting these beautiful suites from Bach.
Great quality of sound
Extraordinaire interprétation ! Sobriété et lyrisme. Magnifique Bach. Merci Abras Schiff

My goodness, what humans can do. Thank you for sharing this.
His memory and concentration abilities are amazing. Quite a challenge to play all these suites in one concert by memory. And his understanding and interpretation of Bach music is, without a doubt, among the best ones. It would be great to see and listen to him perform them at Proms. Bravo Maestro Schiff!!!
His memory & concentration are indeed extraordinary.

This is simply a rendition of great elegance and authority. And J. S. Bach lives on because of it.
more Bach, more Schiff for 2023!
The best balanced performance out there, both in expression and technique! I was fortunate enough to play no2 and no4. Currently learning nos. 3 and 5. András Schiff makes J.S.Bach sound so simple!
I often come to listen to these English Suites and it's alwayls the same pleasure to hear and see playing Sir Andras Schiff. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from France.
I have come back to this performance so many times. Wonderful for studying physics and mathematics to.
The best Bach performer...ever
Thanks for sharing. It's a pure pleasure to listen to Andreas Schiff playing the piano.

This is very beautiful. sweet ornamentation. Bach's music is supreme.
absolutely inspiring how maestro Schiff brings Bach's to life. Outstanding and sublime at the same time
Quite so! Schiff provides excellent talents skills with passion that can be seen from his literally pouring himself into the music so it’s not merely mechanical.
¡Felicitaciones! Por compartir este magnífico y extraordinario recital de un célebre y legendario pianista. Son excelentes sus interpretaciones del genio de BACH con una sensible, sublime y depurada técnica. ¡Saludos! Desde México.
This is just a brilliant performance. Andras Schiff is next to perfect on this occasion and his reading of the English Suites is second to none.
Outstanding! Andras Schiff is a genius!👏👏👏
Virtuosity of the highest order -- technical brilliance meets sublime passion!
babayaga66 and the highest intellect
Well said.
Simply marvellous. Schiff is electrifying!
Thank you Sir Andras, for all your recordings. Best. I can listen to them all day long. You are the greatest. God bless you.
Ouff..., ce prélude en Ré Mineur!! J'ai eu l'impression d'avoir retenue mon souffle jusqu'à la toute fin.
An extraordinary talent playing a group of extraordinary works. A privilege and honor to hear
"This is what I have to say about Bach's life and work: listen, play, love, revere, and keep your mouth shut!".
Albert Einstein
ファンセバスチャンバッハのレパートリーは驚くほど広い。まるで象みたいに広い、ミサやカンタ━タも1部に過ぎない。改めて深さを知りました。ありがとうございました。
so calm, so perfectly played, just as Bach would have hoped
本当に素晴らしい❗️何年も聴いています💖
1:36:05, note how he frees the lower D from the damper (mute D) so that it will resonate once played the D one octave above, without using the pedal. Very clever
Monumental. Inmenso. Muchas gracias por compartir. Saludos desde Buenos Aires.
Outstanding, celestial music. Many thanks for uploading this present for the hart and also for Maestros Bach and Schiff.
Celestial would do. Who needs 'outstanding'?
My God!!! What can I say?! Other than being so grateful for the unique gift given to humanity! Andras Schiff, you are a flowing inspiration to all generations. Bach is really felt alive under your hands,Thank you for all the shared journey can wait to keep walking alongside you.
Gift given?
Andras plays Bach with high perfection !
What a fantastic pianist! What sweet comfort to hear his playing! It is an objective fact that there are few human beings in our history who play so well. Not sure about the circles he moves in, but what a fantastic and accomplished individual!
I think he is too busy constantly moving in circles around the world performing and sharing his gift, what an amazing human being he is
Are you saying he goes in circles? His playing goes in circles? 🙆
@@mckavitt13 He's an excellent pianist, but sometimes I wonder if he doesn't have a poor moral character, or bad politics...
@@johnclendaniel4762 An intriguing idea. Whence comes it, may I ask? As a young man, he always seemed so pure to me & sometimes when I need calm, I play his Bach Preludes & Fugues. It is hard for me to imagine that he lacks integrity, but perhaps you know more about him than I do?
@@mckavitt13 As I said in my previous comment, it's those truly base and depraved conservative Christian Democratic circles he moves and shakes in in Germany and Elsewhere. How does a man stay clean and principled with such trash for Company? Perhaps it's a stoic meditative focus on the truly magnificent composer of Western Music, J. S. Bach, which he plays so beautifully, however, Schiff seems so relaxed and unstressed when so many principled people are facing such unacceptable and harsh persecution precisely for actually maintaining their integrity. I must say I'm skeptical, but would truly be delighted to find that he is as Clear as Crystal...as I said I'm skeptical. Of course I may know more than you, but that's my response.
Never seen him get quite as riled up as he was during that last Gigue. Only with his rock solid integrity does that kind of passion really work with this music.
Может, не разозлился, а разгорячился, воодушевился.
Recently at his performance at Carnegie he called Bach the best composer ever in the world. Comments here are impressed by Andras’ memory, his ability to play 2 hours with eyes closed.. Bach is his daily prayer! ❤️
I listen this pieces everyday :) such a great performance.
Gracias Maestro desde el fin del mundo , Chile.
It is amazing how Andras Schiff performs Bach’s music. The technique, the style, the phrasing and rhythm. It is just impeccable and flawless. Schiff has taken Bach’s works for the keyboard to a much higher level than anyone else.
Press like of you can play Bach for hours on piano mistake free with your eyes closed in front of thousands and make it look effortless...
I get flustered with a couple onlookers of my playing.. I can play 6 P&Fs somewhat convincing now but would do anything to pull off a schiff flawless performance even if just 1 night...
The 20 ppl that pressed like are lying 🤥 . This guy is gifted and must have spent his entire lifetime practicing
It's inspiring to see how comfortable he is with the keyboard, with complete control over it. Outstanding playing!
Well of course he is, it is his whole life.
No me cansó de mirarlo sin partituras es mágico gracias por compartir
Perfection. Listen to other performances.....and you will be back!
Como é que este consegue tocar, de memória, esta obra que dura quase duas horas. Ainda por cima, numa interpretação correcta, sóbria, exacta. Fico parvo...
