My favorite part is the final left hand karate chop of the Echo - the sheer power of that strike combined with its extreme clarity and economy of movement. He doesn’t raise his hand and come down, his hand just suddenly appears in that position on that key, it’s like the Bruce Lee one-inch punch.

Alongside the Toccata of the E minor, This is the most moving, so deep in musicality and drama and overflowing with longing as if praying for something over and over. And Andras Schiff is out of this world making this unforgettable moment stay in our hearts. I must confess I got addicted with his playing that I cant stand listening to any other Bach player, even Perahia and Hewitt. His mastery of tone and touch, his intimate relationship to the music that is so unique, his voicing and orchestra-like texturing and his love for performance make him so transcendental. Thank you God for this gift to humanity. It always makes me humble and work so hard to make miracles happen.

Schiff has mastered Bach's entire output from the inventions all the way through the hardest toccatas and fugues. And yet he rarely ever mentions Glenn Gould! I've always found that interesting. He wanted his own approach to Bach and he's achieved it... while Gould has this perfectly mathematical playing where every note is precisely even and every voice precisely independent, Schiff has a more lyrical cantabile style. He really places a great deal of thought into the idea of "character" and the way different pianistic registers imply different orchestral instruments. I highly recommend his Beethoven sonata lectures!!!

I don't like his Bach at all, I respect him highly. I watched the first 3 English suites he did from memory. It just made me want to listen to Gould. In fact, I turned this off and went back to Gould. Gould plays the allegro much slower, you can hear everything and it is not blurred by pedal. I think Gould's playing has more character, each voice like an individual in a conversation, not blurred by pedal. And the sense of propulsion by keeping the tempo strict. I met him once in Berkeley years ago, he wasn't very nice.

The uniqueness and extreme clarity of his playing is not due to the instrument but to the masterful way Schiff plays. He rarely uses the pedal while playing Bach, in contrast to virtually all other pianists. And this is the result. We are fortunate to live in a time were sound recordings can capture the sound with high fidelity, which was not the case during Gould’s time.

This was the first piece of music by Bach that I learned when I was a teenager, and I recall that it was a joy to play. I remember very specifically that once I overcame the technical challenges, the performance just sort of happened on its own; that is, I exerted very little effort to make sure my fingers hit the correct keys. They just landed in the right place. I had a similar experience with a Chopin waltz, Op. 34 No. 2. Not sure I can describe it, other than to say, with great humility, that the look on Maestro Schiff's face as he floats through the arpeggiated right hand in the opening movement evoked strong feelings for me. Perhaps it would not be an exaggeration to say that the ease of motion is inherent in the composition itself -- another manifestation of the supreme greatness and utter brilliance of JS Bach.

He is always selective when it comes to pianos. He loves tge Cantabile warm sound of the Bosendorfer, and if not that particular instrument he choses the Old Steinway, which has a very singing sound,in this case. And he gets the best out of them. Hes unparalleled

Удовольствие,которое Шифф получает от музыки Баха,редкое явление. Отличное от Гульда,более мягкое и спокойное,но не менее захватывающее.

Schiff is a long-time clavichord player. Makes sense he would carry over some of those habits to the piano.

Lots of pianists do that too! It's somehow a natural and intuitive action when you imagine the phrasing and vibrato.

I am a big fan of Gould. His dance movements may be better as a matter of taste but this newer version of Schiff's overture is so much more delicate. Almost every ornament is intentionally designed, which is magnificent as a whole.

Something it´s very interesting when I watch Shiff play is realizing that he doesn't seem to make any effort to play, even though the piece is technically difficult. Everything comes out naturally as his fingers dance smoothly on the keyboard.
