    Creator of Hill Hill here! Can't tell you all how cool it is to see people engaging with this game. Hill Hill has humbled and helped me tremendously - and I have notoriously been AWFUL sticking with solo drills.
    Remember, the goal isn't to complete these runs once, it's to be comfortable completing them 8 out of 10 times. Thanks Drew and thank you to others for the support. Hope it helps you as much as it's helped me.

      Hey, awesome! I gotta tell you, several people in my league bought them right after I showed them the cards.
      I can honestly say, I got it as a game to play with friends, not expecting it to be such a helpful training tool. Very cool to share it here in my small community on YT and see so many people also interested 💪🏼
      Great work on it! The expansion is a whole ‘nother level too. Looking forward to what more you come up with 🤙🏼🤙🏼

    So I have Projection Pro Billiards and the new stroke zone game over my table. The thing is drastically helping with two things 1: follow through. and 2: speed. the number of times I over run the target zone and have to drastically and I mean drastically slow down my shot is amazing.

      That’s something I’ve noticed watching my own matches after the fact. When I’m playing well, I’m *typically* shooting most shots with much less pace.

    I have heard of this game from others as well and just purchased it to play with my league mates on practice night because it can really be a better teacher than drills and more fun. It also helps to have an objective rather than just mindlessly playing heads up in practice. Pool is supposed to be fun so shout to this guy for creating this and you for bringing a little attention to it in the community. Great video,

    I'm glad you posted this video. I started watching your stream a few weeks ago and I heard you mentioned playing the hill-hill card game. And so I was like what? A card game for pool? Huh? So I googled it. Looked interesting. And I bought it on Amazon. It arrived a couple days ago. I didn't play any of the solo games, I just separated the Run cards and played through all of them. There is a nice mix of stuff to do. Yea the 1 level cards are easy although a couple of them gave me trouble the first time. I am in the camp of people who have trouble doing drills. That is not to say I don't do them, but a lot of times I don't know which ones I really want to do. I have drills that I do from Tor, Bert K., Phil Capelle, Niels, Henning, BU, etc. But with so many options I find it difficult to decide which ones to do today. So it is nice to just grab the deck and play a few. Thanks for educating me on this really cool way to practice.

    if you don't mind a little advice, you should adopt a bit more of a pre-shot routine. you look like you aim as you are getting down on the shot a lot of the time. you don't take enough time to square up and get your body in line with the shot before getting down to shoot it.
    And here's some practice advice... Playing simple stop shots at various lengths will help all of your fundamentals. It will improve stance, pre-shot, and stroke all at once. They are boring as hell, but if you treat them with respect and realize every single one you shoot is a learning and honing opportunity they can actually be a lot of fun. Just take your time and treat each one like it's a winning 8 ball (or 9 ball) You'll be surprised how many you'll miss, but that's a good thing as it's a learning opportunity. That's the beauty of stop shots. You get immediate feedback on what went wrong. You will learn a ton.
    Also practice half ball hits (any shot that is 30 degrees). Between stop shots and half ball hits, that covers 95% of all shots in pool. Everything is just a slight variation/adjustment on those 2 shots. It simplifies the game tremendously.
    Have fun

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte  4 місяці тому +1

      It’s been 11 days since you posted this comment…. But the same day you posted this, I did this setup with the stop shots. Worked on pre-shot routine. It helped, a LOT.
      Just wanna say thanks!! You were right!

    • @RazaXML
      @RazaXML 4 місяці тому

      @@drewvonporte Glad to hear it. But don't practice too hard or you'll be a 9 before you know it. Then your team is screwed lol.
      I have a couple of easy to set up half ball hits for you to try. These are as important as stop shots because they are just like full ball hits. Which is to say you have an exact target to aim for (in this case the edge of the target ball). i.e. the guesswork of aiming is removed so you can concentrate on shooting straight and not estimating the angle of the shot. Once you get good at judging when a shot is near a half ball hit (which is extremely often) you'll be able to adjust your aim accordingly.
      1) One is a spot shot: Put the ball on the spot and the cueball anywhere on the line between the spot and one of the back corner pockets.
      2) A slightly easier shot to make: Imagine a line all the way down the length of the table 1 diamond over from either side. Place the ball on the line 2 diamonds up from the end rail and put the cueball anywhere you want on the line to shoot it in the corner.
      To make things go quicker mark the spots with a doughnut sticker or PROTIP: take your shaft and chalk the tip. Then use that to mark the table like a bingo marker lol. Makes great temporary marks that will last all practice session.

    Ugg, the thought of serious practice with drills of any kind makes me wanna run. I'm like a 6 year old, can't stay still. So the really good player that mentors me got me throwing out 9 balls in any location I want and take ball in hand to try and run em out. If I miss, I start again. It is the closest I can get to "organized." That being said, I would like to play the card game with friends as it would be more like "competition" and not so much drilling. Thanks for the card game review!

    My rail shot practice drill was putting all 15 balls frozen randomly on each rail around the table. Then the cue ball randomly on the table as the starting point. The object is to make (all) 15 rail shots, in no particular order, without missing a shot or bumping another ball off the rail. No combos. Which I regularly accomplished after a few tries. As soon as I miss a ball or bump a ball off a rail I reset back to 15 balls. "Practice Makes perfect" they say.

    anytime you practice like this, if you miss, shoot the next ball to reinforce in your mind making the balls, or set up the last miss then shoot and make it. the made ball has to stick in your mind for confidence otherwise your mind has a missed ball stuck in it. ever notice after league night the missed shots haint you but the 5 perfect shots leading up to it dont?

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte  7 місяців тому

      You’re totally right, they do haunt you…
      If it’s a ball I feel I should make, then I will play it a few times. BUT- when I practice with the cards, I usually lose/miss because my shape sucked. So I reset it back up, and find the error in the shape. Sometimes I mis-shape it 5x in a row, and realize I’m choosing a hard pattern. Reset it back up, go a different route, and realize 💡

    You should definitely stick with the no combo rule, cause some of these pattern like whatever that one at 6:40 is is a common pattern in regular pool, and not all of the balls are yours, so you definitely should not learn how to play combos with that one. Although when it's you opponents ball in the corner, then you need to figure it out.

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte  5 місяців тому

      I have *somewhat* strayed from my own combo rule… mainly for the card “Butcher’s Mouth”, not the one you point out. THAT one, yes, I prefer using the practice to shape each of those separately.
      With Butcher’s Mouth, it’s all too congested, so I make sure to control a specific combo to start the runout… which is also important for a reg game of 8-ball!!

    To handicap Hill-Hill matches with lower ranked opponents (or to make a specific setup harder while practicing) , especially with setups where moving balls is frowned upon, you might want to repeat each shot a predetermined number of times (2, 3 or 4) and use the worst position of the cue ball from those attempts as the starting point for the next shot. Of course if you miss any, the run is over. This is based on the Demetrius Jelatis ‘3x Drill' demonstrated by Nate Tam in this 6 minute UA-cam video: ua-cam.com/video/-Q_qljeB6vI/v-deo.html

    Interesting...a card game. Try 8 ball (break head on), I started doing this years ago prior to seeing players play those x pattern drills. Anyway, it's the same concept as the x pattern, but always try coming back to center or within a relative area. Run out like it's ping pong full table, each shot switching sides. It's really interesting to try versus how you'd normally logically run out with blockers. Also...give 14.1 another try, I surprised myself after trying that. Personally, I get bored real quick trying drills...in my mind there's not much to figure out...in turn least for me turning into boredom. The L drill though that one trying to get better with speed control, fun...but I tend to take it potentially a bit too far/too hard on myself.
