We've wanted to open up about this topic for so long but truthfully, have been so afraid to talk about it...with how much the world and affordability of housing has changed in the last few years, (and like we said in this episode), it's only natural there would be confusion on who is to blame but if you listened to the full story of where we came from and how we got here, I hope you better understand our perspective...this is definitely a topic that we can dive into deeper in a future episode but we're really looking forward to chatting with you all in the comments about this one! ❤
This is an excellent topic. It is always amazing to me how the great financial rewards “luck” always has a lot of really hard work, lessons learned , courage to keep going .. and why it always surprises those seeking financial security!
Don't feel guilty or let other people's impulsive comments bring shade on your very smart financial progress. I'm immensely happy that small businesses like yours take off and provide a living while improving housing opportunities. We need to applaud the common man breaking away from corporate control. Yay for you two! Love ya.
You two are always reinforcing what an amazing team you are. The model for a healthy marriage. The key to your financial freedom you said was real estate. But really, it was your hard work, smarts and courage. You saw an opportunity in real estate and made the best of it. You’ve worked for everything you have. So refreshing.
This is why we are trying to build a tiny home for my teenager, because he only has one year left of school and it would be near impossible for him to move out and afford rent on his own! That way he can still have his privacy and own space but he can park it in our backyard for as long as he needs.
Hello! We sold our last home 15 years ago and moved to the mountains. We rented the first year to make sure it was a good fit to live in all 4 seasons. Well, along that journey, we discovered we liked the freedom of renting. We have been in our rental now for 14 years, we’ve paid to have our backyard landscaped, painted walls, and bought and installed a new kitchen sink and dishwaasher. We do not call our landlords for anything. We pay our rent on the day it is due always, and treat our house as though it is ours. Our landlords have never raised our rent, and that is a win for us, because we are living on a retirement pension.
Some adopt the Tiny House or Nomad Caravan Lifestyle for a year or two..I see it as a transition..not a long-term thing unless you are always traveling and are rarely there all the time. Isolation is not the Answer..at some point, you need Proximity to services, Hospitals, Vets, schools, etc..that is Maturity..the type of Women have more than Men..Just Guns, Gold and a Getaway Plan is ok for a Season, but not long term..dans la duree..as say the French..it ain't sustainable unless you get a Micro Hydro or Nuke Reactor or Something...lol. So, we now know who is the Bitch..we are all somebody s bitch...lol
If you are new to Tyler & Todd this is their 2nd channel that just started up maybe 3 months ago. 33k isn't to shabby. Check out their original channel. Tyler & Todd.
They lose subscribers because they don’t live up to their posting video commitments. I know I’ve been frustrated. I personally want to see more of their renovations, building their container house etc and they aren’t showing any videos of that. I venture to say, I’m no way a hater and I bet this is why people are dropping off. The Tangents get old and I lose interest fast. I enjoyed their building videos. My opinion, don’t beat me up for it. I love these guys! ❤️
@@sharonmansfield3053 This is their second channel. Their original channel Tyler and Todd has only been growing. Those of us who watch homestead or off grid channels are fully aware that in the winter months the content usually looks a little different. And we're ok with it. Also, are you listening to their podcast? Because they have been really transparent about their off grid journey and the struggles that they are having, especially in the winter months. Maybe you would have a better understanding, or compasion, if you did have a listen.
@sharonmansfield3053 thats on their main channel. They took a couple of weeks off over the holidays as most ppl do. And they came back to several feet of snow so they cant show any building projects.
You both have invested in your own futures… people who would criticize are just jealous that they are either not disciplined enough or intelligent enough to do the same for themselves . You have every reason to be SO proud of what you’ve accomplished !! It takes hard work, planning and commitment to the plan to make significant progress! Enjoy YOUR life and let the haters complain to a blank wall …. 😘❤️😘❤️
This channel especially this episode should almost be recommended viewing for young people . I bet a lot of your viewers who are older and have kids are sending them the link right now . ❤ from Ontario
Most people (ok most women) I know would love to have a friend or partner or spouse like both of you... I'm sure you have your days , everyone does, but I'm so proud of how you divy things up and work together ❤️
You two embraced the old cliche, "You reap what you sew." Your hard work and bottomless dedication to start something and finish it, certainly says a lot about your determination to succeed. Your choices were spot on. You did it your way. One thing I noticed is that during your personal growth and financial future projects, you have always taken time to "smell the roses," to enjoy life and each other. Congratulations to your success and you should be so proud of what you have accomplished. You inspire others and have a wonderful way of minimizing the fear in taking risks. When you are young, this is the time to assert yourself to prepare for the future. You two have the "IT FACTOR," in truckloads.
Okay, maybe I’m in the minority, but I see NO controversy in this topic. I guess I never thought you were slum lords. I always understood that you bought, renovated and chose to rent your properties for a nest egg for your future and that because you did all of the work, you would continue to care about the property and the people who were living in your homes. You have every right to be entrepreneurs and the fact that you are ethical entrepreneurs is a tribute to both of you. With the current housing situation, I would much rather people like you provide housing than huge corporations who care about nothing but the bottom line and who have contributed in a major way to inflated housing costs.
I admit I was somewhat surprised at how open you two are about things when you began Tangents. It's no wonder there's been more commentary. But as someone once said, What you think of me is none of my business. Congrats on your courage. I love the opportunity to get a better sense of who you both are.
I love this episode. Thank you for talking about this topic. As someone who worked hard and got my home at the age of 25 I often hear " oh you are so lucky to have gotten a house when you did" luck /timing yes but it was also hard work behind it. They forget that I lived in the basement in a makeshift apartment and rented the main floor out and did renovations on the home along the way to make it what it is now. Which I sold last year for a profit and downsized to be able to travel now. Love the videos and podcasts thanks for the entertainment.
Your journey together is very similar to mine and my husband's in the way you were so dedicated to a way of life for survival. For five years we ran a restaurant together. (We originally bought two then sold one). At first we were very excited. We had my southern recipes, we custom designed every detail, built our own tables, I built custom copper details throughout , we built a marketing profile and opened for business. It was a success! It was also a difference dumpster fire every day of the week! After five years of feeling like we were running in place I became physically ill, we lost contact with so many great friends and we couldn't leave to take vacations. We were wasting our late 30's. Worst of all I couldn't stay pregnant and I wanted a baby more than anything. The voice inside my head (my greatest guide in life) was literally saying "I'm dying " when I opened my eyes in the morning. My husband and I made a drastic decision. We sold the restaurant, our house, invested in IVF and moved to a quiet rural town in the Midwest. I am now relaxing on my comfy sofa looking at a pretty pond full of geese and listening to my beautiful five year old twins giggle in their bouncy house on the patio while my husband is upstairs working at his remote job. This life is EVERYTHING to me. Every day I wake up eternally grateful for the voice speaking to me from deep inside nearly six years ago. I think you two are good at listening to your inner voices and following your hearts too.
Completely teared up reading this. I want you to know how happy I am for you and this life you manifested... your pretty pond full of geese and all. I'm sure there were people who thought you were completely nuts for making such a detour but kudos to you for following your heart and inner voice, so many people NEVER do. Sending you so much love xoxo
@@tangentswithtylerandtoddThank you! 😊 Yes, many people were shocked because we had worked so hard to build something great and I'm sure from the outside it looked like we were just throwing all of that hard work away. But those closest to us were very supportive and knew that we had not been happy for a while. Sending much love right back to you two! I wish the best for you both.
I really appreciate you guys having this conversation, because it is an issue where nuance is necessary. My husband and I rented a loft in a converted factory. It was a nice property, but the landlord did zero maintenance. When we moved in, the heat didn't work. They did a quick fix, but after it broke down again, we took them to court and lost. I've now inherited a property that I'm gutting a renovating, and I'm having to consider the ethics of what happens if I rent it rather than sell it. So I can definitely see both sides of the issue. I've never judged you two for investing in real estate because I know you've done the work yourselves and you're not slumlords. I think someone like you investing in a few properties no one wants and putting them back on the market is very commendable!
Wow wee, I feel even more in awe of you two. Everything you’ve created for yourself s has been accomplished through such hard work and smarts. You have NOTHING to feel bad about. You’re both exceptional so you are not going to find many peers that have done a similar thing to assure their financial freedom. I imagine that for people who throw shade are just envious
You are absolutely correct about the corporate owners. My old building lived in by seniors always paying their rent on time, was sold by the owner and advertised as a "great deal" by the realtor as the rents were under market. Ultimately, 36 tenants were evicted by the corporate owner for "extensive repairs" and then had to find housing elsewhere when there was none. Same corporate owner bought 2 other buildings in our area, same eviction process. Rent went from $900 per month to $1850 per month. Tenants banded together to attempt to get local government leaders to assist and they did absolutely nothing. It's unbelievable listening to politicians saying they will build more housing, but it's never, ever for rentals.
Actually, that is not far off the mark. The local government in our small community was more concerned about the buildings being sold we believed to get the property taxes that these buildings generate, and not alienate the new corporate owners, hoping for some further cohort with these owners in other respects. Rather devious. Love you guys, wish you all the best. I'd love to see your design for a small home.
I love how you share how your hard work has paid off. I realize I do not “know” either one of you but after watching you for several months I have no doubt that you could never be slummy landlords. Your care and concern for each other and your families shines through. The bottom line is that you have both worked extremely hard for what you have and you deserve to enjoy it. Well done gentlemen.
Hey guys, don’t overthink your decisions or what people think. I think a lot of negative criticism comes from people who are jealous. You two are so smart by starting to save in college and planning for your future. I wish I had started to save at an earlier age, but was busy spending my money after college. I don’t see the negative connotations of owning rentals in the states. I have lots of friends who have property rentals as investments. They are years younger then I am, and literally could retire from their jobs now. I think they are amazing, creative, people; as you two are. Be proud of your ACCOMPLISHMENTS! Real estate is one of the top investments you can make. Just make sure your retirement portfolio is diversified. ❤Skip
I remember you asking for questions on a video a long time ago. Thank you! This was one of mine. I don’t judge you at all. You only control you, not the market. You are still renting them out. It’s not like they are sitting empty waiting on market changes.
All I can say is I wish I was renting from you right now! My apartment is managed by one of the bad corporations, who have consistently deferred maintenance and now things are falling apart, but they found a new way to gouge us, and that is by charging us for things that were once included in the rent: sewer, trash and water. We have a mix of tenants here, full pay and Section 8, which here in the US is subsidized housing by the government. Their contracts do not allow payment to go to non-rent, non-electric expenses. Therefore, when they require us to pay their liability insurance, and water, trash and sewage , then our place takes these costs and divides them among the number of full pay tenants. The costs change monthly and we have no legal recourse but to pay what is demanded. I live in OK, which is a red state, and here, renters have no rights. The landlords have all the power. I hate it, but can’t move because I am fully retired and rent expenses have sky-rocketed beyond what I can afford. This community has devolved into a hostile community due to lack of maintenance and the F/U attitudes by office management. I am slowly saving for an opportunity in the future to get out of this place into a better one, even if it means relocating to a state that has renter’s rights. God I hate what Republicans and Trump have done to us! I am sure there are horror stories everywhere. Thank you for being ‘outstandingly great’ landlords. You make my heart smile! I always like spending time with you! ❤️
That is so unforunate...I never understand landlords who act like that? Why on earth would you not want your property to be well maintained and looked after?! It's just going to get worse and worse. Sorry you're having to deal with that!
💰💵🤑💲My grandparents became millionaires by buying a house and paying it off then continuing to pay the payments into a savings account. The same thing with automobiles. Then they would buy farmland and sharecrop it. After 50 years of doing this they retired millionaires. ‼️💚
You absolutely should be proud of all of your accomplishments. The best thing you can do for yourselves is focus on yourselves, and don’t let other people’s negativity impact your day. We are living in such a negative world right now, I choose to focus on people who are uplifting and are interesting; and you guys are definitely “my people”. Keep doing you!
I've followed you guys since you started traveling, and I've known a little about your properties and how you got to where you are. And I've never once been upset with or blamed you for the housing crisis! My husband and I bought our house in 2012. We have to renew our mortgage this May and we are STRESSED! Our payment is going to become the most we have ever had to pay living here. Its insane! The government really needs to step up and stop supporting banks and start supporting its citizens! Loved hearing more about how you got to where you are! Much love to you all!! ❤
I feel you. We are in the UK. We finally bought our first home 2 years ago, and this year the payments have almost DOUBLED! Yet, today it has been announced that Lloyd's Bank has reported records profits in the billions, up 57% from 2022!!!! How is this legal??
The government runs the worst and biggest bank of all = the federal reserve! Because it has a monopoly on currency (and a powerful currency at that, as the world’s reserve currency at the moment, though it may soon lose that status), the government uses it to expanding the money supply, which directly causes inflation (an “invisible” tax on our poorest members of society). If you want the problem to change, you must educate yourself about the root causes of our economic problems, and spread the knowledge to others! 🙂 Helpful resources: “Economics in One Lesson” by Harry Hazlett, “Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?” by Richard J. Maybury, and Ron Paul’s “End the Fed.”
I’m so glad you guys chose to share at this level…though why anyone would criticize you for providing decent housing is beyond me. This discussion showed a side of you both that I’m so impressed by. Housing is such a basic need and to have better landlords in our society is a real bonus and you have thought things through so well, thanks for sharing!
Oooh, it is a controversial subject for sure. As a renter in Halifax, I’m currently protected by the rental cap. I have so much anxiety about when it’s lifted. I won’t be able to afford my rent being doubled or more. This keeps me awake at night.
Fact and Reality..Most small Landlords are actually subsidizing their tenants more every year, via Rental Losses, with the rising costs of Maintenance, Interest, and Property taxes but stagnant rents...the non-cash Market value Gains due to a property's appreciation become meaningless when the Bank forecloses..unfair laws..so I think the future of Housing is small landlords, Housing Coops and Conglomerates, each offering different spaces...with different Mindsets.
THIS!!! There's a quadruple whammy happening right now....insurance companies are increasing rates on premiums, municipalities have increased property taxes, mortgage rates are WAY up, and the cost of repairs and maintenance is way up. It sucks that people's rents have increased but the true cost of owning a property has gone way up, they cannot be expected to subsidize the cost and have to pass it on...if small landlords are pushed out of the market and gobbled up by multi-nationals and REITS who can afford to run losses in the short term, good luck to renters out there because it will be so much worse. @@andreewert1925
In my personal experience in Southern California, landlords are charging really high prices and not taking care of the properties. Out of area people are buying apartment complexes in lower economic areas, doing unnecessary cosmetic renovation but not fixing AC/ heat units, and then raising rents by a lot. The renters who lived there for years couldn't afford it and had to move. The landlord across the street from me is from a foreign country. She has a person who handles the properties poorly. It seems to be heartless and all about making more money. It is a real mess. Renters are afraid to ask that the washer actually works or they will face consequences. As far as you guys go, I know you have integrity and trust you handle your properties fairly.
I'm adding to my first statement - y'all do such skilled, careful and creative work on your projects - the garden, the ponds, the roads etc pretty much everything - whatever you feel you need to do for yourselves - y'all have to live with it - I'll support whatever you do - y'all tend to see the best in most people - so do you❣ Thanks for all you do and share - hugs all around and pet lovings to share with Charley, Eddie and Squirrel - they all bring smiles to my face🙂.
Back when I was young I had a boyfriend who's father owned a chain of super marts. I lived in a 30 story hi rise. Every Sunday I would start at the top of the building and work my way down collecting all the coupon pages we would cut them out and bring them to his father for the cash and in turn that money provided some really wonderful dinners.
“Later in the winter, like March, April” had me laughing. I live in New Mexico, and right now, February 21, my lilac bush has green buds, our plum tree is sprouting some buds too. It’s mid 60’s……. Feels like Spring 🥰 Garbage, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure 😉
Aargh! Traditionally, where I live the ice will let go of the beaches of the lakes at first of May... It happens a little bit earlier now, but still... I've been shovelling snow for a week now, and just when I'm finished, it starts snowing again.... I must confess I am just a little bit envious!😬 cheers! / CS
@@thecrazyswede2495 the main reason we chose to retire in New Mexico is the climate. We LOVE seeing the sun almost 365 days a year. We do have all 4 seasons, but they’re all doable. Spring and fall are still my favorites though
@@kjmorley so true, New Mexico is beautiful. Whenever we travel in our self converted van, we’re still amazed at the scenery, pretty much in any direction we travel. Coming home from our travels is still my favorite thing. I’m so lucky too that my partner had the foresight to start planting about 22 trees, most of them while we were still unpacking boxes when we moved here. We now have our very own little oasis. We spend so much time outside, even during summer, when it can hit close to 100 degrees, as long as you’re in the shade, it’s pretty comfortable. Hope to welcome you to New Mexico some day ☺️
Be proud of what the two of you have accomplished in your young lives. Screw the people that have issues. You have worked very hard in every aspect. In my opinion you guys are very mindful and responsible in all of your choices. Great job !!!!!
I think when the business model is buying a dilapidated property, fixing it up, and then selling it at whatever its new appraised property value is with the sweat equity and remodeling done is actually a great value to society and the community. But when the business model is doing all of that but keeping the property it means you're preventing someone else who could've purchased it, forcing them to continue to rent, which doesn't serve the community to the greater good. So no, it's not your responsibility to house the community, but it should be our responsibility to not take resources out of the community for our own personal wealth, especially when that means leaving someone else constantly having to rent and never being able to own and build their own equity. The fact is Landlords offset costs by placing the financial burden on the tenants. So tenants have the responsibility and burden of property ownership with none of the perks, no equity, and little chance of ever being able to afford to own, so in the end they don't get much of anything positive out of throwing money away every month.
Best episode ever! I am a retired commercial realtor. You should be proud of what you have done and what you're doing. Your landlord objectives are NOT the problem. From what i hear, you are helping every homeowner in each community by maintaining property values w/o gouging your tenants. When you realize potential harm of short term rentals on housing market, you changed course even though it would reduce profitability. You bought the houses no one wanted & did what many could do but what few actually will do: work their asses off and call it fun and allow that work to strengthen yourselves and your union. You are taking lesser properties and creating lively liveable homes. Your lives have helped the housing market. I'm so very proud of you.
This has been the most intelligent video you have ever created. You were extremely smart investing in real estate since your 20's. I wish I had done the same thing 45 years ago. I talked about that with my two brothers but they didn't want to get together and do house renovations and rent them or to just flip them. I was not able to do it on my own due to some physical limitations. You don't sound like slum lords so good on you. Keep up the good work, love the videos. ❤
When my sons were in high school, I used to tell them, all the time, which they hated, you’ve got a choice, you can either work your guts out for the next few years, then relax for the rest of your life, or you can have a fun high school and university career, party, drinking, socialising and making friends, but then you’ll have to work your guts out for the rest of your life. But it’s your choice! You two just made the choice that suited you.
OMG I used to love Income Property and Todd is so right about Scott, lol. also wow i knew you boys were smart but Tyler getting those kinds of grades while still working a job AND your side business is pretty damn impressive. its pretty clear the work ethic you both have to have saved that much money in a time people are usually going into debt. I worked through college, lived at home and still came out with student loans. and i was so NOT a partier. My life was work, school and my boyfriend who is now my husband of 25 years. You boys were both brilliant to work towards your futures the way you did, to start that business you did and to plan to get into the rental world back then. The amount of work it would have taken to get you where you are is just so impressive. SO IMPRESSIVE. You have every right to be so proud. I wish i had been that smart back when I was younger and taken some risks maybe id be in a better financial position now. oh i just wanted to add that my husband who is in construction here in rural ontario (and we have been Dealing with our township for permits to build a garage with living space above for a year and we still haven't even started yet) was just saying the other reason for all the over compensation with the building code is because of liability and insurance, my gosh do they love making you get engineer stamps on everything, multiple times even for a minor change which ads to costs as well as too many people being in there that have never actually built a house or garage or barn or whatever and only know from books. requirements in code have gone crazy yet strangely those subdivision houses are still built like crap with all kinds of problems and the other houses are so overbuilt that it costs twice as much than it should have. for us with the outrageous price of materials and the demands from the township what we had planned to build is going to cost almost three times as much as when we decided to do this before covid hit. I still don't understand why we had to put in a larger septic when ours was perfectly fine and we are not adding any extra people bathrooms or kitchens. Just more space for our giant teenage/early 20s kids to stay out of my way. but there you go that's my rant, lol.
I just love you guys and your story. I'm so proud of your ambition and tenacity. You're a both a beautiful example of what hard work can bring. It's obvious in your relationship and your approach to life. Those with negative comments are from those who want it all handed to them with no effort on their part at all. Keep doing what you do just the way you want to do it. Love you two so much❤❤❤
You two are absolutely amazing and beautiful humans. I love you guys. My perspective is that you both love and respect each other and have the BEST communication between the two of you (I wish my hubby and I could communicate as well as y'all do). I was a bit surprised to learn that you both have anxiety because generally it doesn't show in your videos. Never let the haters get to you; everyone is always going through something and will push their negativity onto someone else. Everything you two do is so well thought out. Keep up being y'all's fabulous selves. Love n hugs from Ohio! ❤
I left Reddit because it was just getting too vicious . I started a positive comments post for a UA-cam couple that I followed for the last seven years who are getting horrible comments…and it was shut down by a moderator after 6 negative commenters came from the negative thread and started posting all kinds of BS. Calling me delusional and a drunk etc I wrote the moderator asking why my positive thread was shut down and why the negative comments weren’t sighted. She said I shut it down because you’re never gonna change their mind. I couldn’t believe my positive post was shut down because of negative comments with no repercussion to the A-holes that were posting BS. I decided to just shut down my my Reddit account
Omg Reddit is WILD!!! I just found out about "snark" pages...disgusting. I am so grateful we've flown under the radar on reddit and no one has created one for us, it's so cruel.
I truly admire just how hard you two have worked, how dedicated, and how caring and empathetic you have remained. Don’t let anyone tell you that you were wrong.
I've been watching you guys for over a year and as a child advocate i can't imagine any better parents for a child. Someone who thinks long term, works hard and is secure, that's a win win every day. You're a great example to all. Go Gents go!
Hi guys,I am a 67 yr old great grandmother.I live in Adelaide Australia. This podcast is the best I've ever seen and heard!! You young men are so interesting and hardworking. You are also caring and family oriented. I admire your attitude s and ethics. You both need to stop worrying about what other people think of how live your life.I would suggest a lot of the negative comments you receive are results of jealousy. Of course no one will ever admit this but there really isn't any other valid reason to be put you down. You are both doing things correctly. You are setting yourselves up for self financing your retirement. You are supplying homes for people to rent and you are making sure they are in good working condition. You are not raising rent every year. Take my compliments as encouragement to continue living the way you do now and enjoy it.You have certainly earned the right to be content. Thankyou for such an interesting podcast. I loved it. PS.Your Parents must be very proud of you both. I am 😊🎉
People are mean when they can hide behind a keyboard. I always say, I'll challenge them to a mile run outside and then we'll see who's tough. ha ha Plus it's just small minded to judge others when you haven't lived in their shoes. Your life story is very admirable, you've done your best and you have survived and now thriving. My life was living super tight until I got decades in. It takes awhile to figure things out, and taking those steps, taking years even to figure out what to do and how to do it in order to make a decent living, that's way more admirable to go after a goal. A hard working friend of mine says, 'You can't "talk" something to finished, you shut up and work." Look at your views and know.....most people are interested and happy to hear about your journey.
The world has become so much less civilized. Strangers feel as if they have the right to comment/criticize/question the actions of others. You need a thick skin to do what you do and not take it personally. Don’t read the comments!!! Keep finding the joy in what you do, and thank you for sharing a slice of your world with us.
Tea Time: Immediately I was GET OUT OF THERE. Further evaluation means LOOK at the timeline, the setup, the ask… Girl meets girl that’s already married. Girl is brought into marriage. Girl is to be made guilty of not going to “love them” or “sacrifice” after all they’ve done for her and have their baby? That’s a lot of manipulation. It seems as if it was intentional. Married Girl makes girl fall in love with her, and then introduces her to a triangle… Triangulation: that’s a little too “by the narcissistic personality disorder playbook” for me.
Some things that don't get acknowledged here. 1.) Tyler and Todd were fortunate to find each other fairly young in life and made a commentate. 2.) Tyler was fortunate to game the scholarship system after failing in a university and succeed in getting an atypical amount of scholastic support. We can debate the ethics of some of the scholarships he may have received... 3.) They began young, had lots of energy to renovate derelict properties. There were probably instances where the work was passable but substandard, because youth can't know and do everything without help somewhere. 4)They are a two person spousal income that is solidly 6 figures without dependents (no, pets are not legal dependents.) In short they are both lucky, fortunate, and somewhat atypical in their success. To minimize it to being "they just worked hard," while technically true, is also disingenuous. Being charming and charismatic and youthfully good-looking sometimes outweighs business acumen. If you have the ability to outsource production of a podcast, on top of a main channel and property management/renovation, you aren't hurting for resources.
Tyler & Todd - what an excellent, informative and honest podcast. You both ought to be immensely proud of your choices, hard work and long term planning. I’ve watched your channel for years - am now enjoying your podcast too. You are so deserving of your success, financial and otherwise. Bugger the naysayers - (not literally)!! It’s often the case that negative comments say so much more about the commenter that they do about you. All the very best to both of you -
Agree with your position on the real estate issues/building/construction. Sorry if anyone gives you guys nasty comments for being in the housing market. ❤ you guys so level headed.
That will be a very interesting episode. I remember in previous episodes on the channel (T&T) how much you worked and invested yourself into this. No blame from me at all.
Hey Tyler & Todd, I'm so grateful for having y'all in my life and giving me great advice on subjects about love & life. Every episode keeps me going on in life when I'm having bad and sad days. Thank you for being there for me when I needed someone or a pick-me up to cheer up for the day. Y'all are making a different in my life, so never give up and always keep these podcast episodes coming in the future. #LoveYall #Thanks #TangentWithTylerAndTodd 💕😘😍❤
You guys are great! Love your Tangents episodes. There is nothing wrong with how you chose to invest your time, incredible hard work and money. Any negative comments should be ignored, there will always be haters. There is also a huge affordable housing shortage and enormous rent increases in Australia right now. Homelessness has risen and it has forced young people out of the rental market as it has become unaffordable down hers. This phenomenon post Covid seems to be happening in many places around the world.
Ignore the haters. They like to criticize others so they don’t have to focus on themselves! You two are amazing. Good for you! You took charge of your lives and did what most are afraid to do! You guts Rock, love your channel ❤❤❤❤
You guys have been incredibly responsible from a very young age. Looking towards your future, physically working hard, trying new things out, and pivoting when needed to make your best life. You are doing a great job! Thank you for the shout-out for not blaming the Baby Boomer generation. People don't understand that when I bought my house 28 years ago, I had to fight hard to buy a house on a low salary. I worked as hard for my house as others have. Why do people think we should now sell our homes so others can buy them?!
Listening to this makes me realize how lucky we’ve been. My mom and I moved into a rental condo 12 years ago. It’s a nice neighborhood and great location. The owner had an unexpected transfer and had bought at the top of the housing bubble so had he sold he would have taken a massive loss. Now I’m older and looking at my own housing needs and dreams…he only raised the rent by $25 a month per year. It’s a mixed use complex as a company bought more than 10% when the builder went bankrupt so the private owner of this unit could have easily decided he wanted the $1800 a month the company owned units were getting but by keeping rent affordable while meeting his goals he had a single tenant for since 2021 who took care of the place and now he has quite significant equity. It was a win win for everyone. I wish more people were like this, just like you two are!
I applaud you for converting your short term rentals to regular long term rentals. The housing crisis has many things that contributed to it, and short term rentals are one of them. And kudos for putting yourselves out there honestly. You have nothing to be ashamed of, you’ve worked hard to get where you are. Hateful trolls are unfortunately a reality for anyone running a channel or any kind of social media venture.
It is so interesting to hear you talk about all the renovations you did and renting those homes after you did all that work. Could be very exciting to see some of the before and after pictures! Hahaha….You guys must’ve worked so hard all those years! Congratulations. We are now (my husband and I) renovating a home we bought last summer. We found out too late it was full of mould and asbestos! Eurk…so instead of spending major $ for a lawyer and trying to sue the previous owner, we opted to strip everything and start building with new material. What a journey! Hoping in 2 years, this home will be very beautiful so we can sell it and go for way smaller. 😊
I don’t understand why folks decide to destroy where they rent. I have rented for 35 years in 25 different places, never have any complaints towards me. Because I can LIVE and respect the landlord. And again they have respected me❤
I know that socialism doesn’t work any more, being from Norway 🇳🇴 that’s a big statement yes, but now I see that even there there are no so many poor people. Though I now live in a happy life a retired in the Canary Islands 🇮🇨 as a 55 year old, I worked hard for 25 years as a computer specialist.
Heads up, (Tea time) there’s billons for people out there for you… if you get into relationship with some that have still a relationship with someone and want child)… F that move on to next…it’s actually not that difficult… I know.
I am so sad that this is such a controversial topic! I think how you have navigated real estate income is so incredibly impressive. I'm just proud of you both! No controversy here - you two are incredible. Sending all my love ❤❤
Love all you guys share! NVM the ppl throwing shade. You guys worked/work hard. H cannot imagine Tyler’s attention to details and long term finance savvy and Todd’s get it done but do it with style, attention to detail with perfectionism and drive would never allow you guys to ever be “slum lords.” You care too much about what you’re doing. You invest your hearts and minds into the work you do.🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Don't forget that you are also providing housing for people that aren't in a position to buy or don't want to buy. There is always a market for renters so being great landlords is amazing and does not lump you in with big money grab corporations. 🖤
1. It is always great when LGBTQIA+ people have enough money. 2. It would be best if they got it without exploiting others. Well, sweethearts, you got your money through hard, honest work. That's so uplifting. Improving property and reselling it for it's improved value is plain hard work and not speculation. And then by being the sweetest landlords on the planet. There you became part of the capitalistic world but so gently. All in all, so uplifting. I'm looking forward to your details, doubts, and pride.
Ok, can I just say thank you? I, (Todd) have been really insecure about talking about this because the internet is vicious. I know you haven’t heard the episode yet, but you’re right… it’s been HARD and honest work. We can revisit these moments and talk about them in the retrospective but the reality is no one but Ty and I will ever know what it was really like to huddle for every single opportunity we’ve been “given” ❤
I love how Eddie is literally part of the staff for these podcasts! I do miss Lily making her appearance like she did at the land though, where is Squirrel?
I literally laughed right out loud when Eddie stood up, gave that blank stare to the camera which seemed like 30 secs long; it was hilarious! Apparently he wanted his screen time too! Excellent topic as always! Enjoy all 5 of you so very much on Wednesdays& Sundays. Have a great week. ❤ Elaine
I've lived in my apartment for 4 years and my rent has gone up every year. The complex is corporate-owned. I live in a studio because I can't afford anything larger because the rental market in my town is ridiculous. I don't want to own because I don't have the physical ability to do the maintenance necessary. But I shouldn't be priced out of decent housing just because I choose to rent.
Thank you for being open about your financial stability and being real about everything. The fake personas on You Tube are turning me off. Offering homes/units as rentals are not adversely impacting the housing supply. It’s good that during the housing shortage you are putting your short term rentals aka air B&Bs back into the housing market.
I'm so sorry to hear you've been having a bunch of negative feedback. That sucks. Good for you for creating more rental properties in Edmonton! We need them, at all price points, all over the city. I have been laughing through this whole video about the title ... Which controversial topic!? ... half the time, the only way we know what you meant to be talking about on TwT&T is by the title! Love your channel and what you get up to. Thanks for taking us along.
Don't let them make you feel guilty!!! Y'all should be proud - y'all have done really well and I'm really proud of you both - I should have done what y'all did when I was younger. Wages have not grown with costs - the people that want a home can't always afford it - the big companies are to blame - they are using what they want to rent properties - they update the rent EVERY YEAR - y'all keep doing what y'all do!!!
You two literally did and are doing now, what every person has the opportunity to do and achieve. Work hard and save to achieve your goals. Never apologize for that or think that you are preventing anyone else from doing the same. People make their own choices. Every choice you make has a consequence. Good choices equal good consequences. Bad choices equal bad consequences. The sooner people realize that, the better off they will be.
You guys are great with all your accomplishments. Don’t let the naysayers get to you. Each of us have our own path, and your path is working for you. Great videos.
You guys worked hard and used this market to progress well enough for your modest needs. You didn't exploit people and that is the key. You deserve everything you have. So many people in their youth are out playing all the time and complaining. I agree your Government and mine in the US have a lot of responsibility to help--- BUT you guys didn't just sit and complain while you played away your productive years and put all the blame on the Government. You guys are amazing in so many ways, this is just one more.
I have had my own home for over 20 years, but the last apartment I rented before I had it was owned by a wonderful family. They were great landlords, and I always remember them fondly. Thankfully, while not all my landlords were as great, I never had to suffer from renting from a slum landlord. I applaud good landlords like you two.
I am so glad that I took the time to listen to your story. You should be proud of yourself for the hard work you have done to look out for your future.
I'm going to be 62 and my kids are a few years older than you guys. Happy Birthday to both of your moms! Kudos to you both for all you've accomplished!!
I really enjoy this conversation about renovating real estate. It is like watching those old shows watching houses being converted to have suites. It is fun
I give you young men so much credit for seeing the need to return your short term rentals to long term. As a renter myself in Honolulu there are more than 40,000 homes that could be long term but are caught up in the AirBB market. And most rentals that are left are beyond affordable.😢😢. And don’t get me started on code laws. 😮😮. It is so true about the government being responsible for so much of the housing crisis. People can only be squeezed so much before it just explodes. Thats certainly another rant😢
Interior designer here! I wanna weigh in on the building code discussion and landlord discussion. BC and more broadly, Canada, is on the roadmap to 2030, meaning we are aiming for carbon neutral and eventually negative by 2050. It is important for energy step codes etc to apply to major renovations of old buildings and certainly new ones. This is more eco friendly than tearing down and building new, as well as improving operational efficiencies of buildings. These old buildings tend to be drafty, which increases gas and power consumption. This is bad for the owners bottom dollar, as well as environmental impact. It can be frustrating to incur additional construction costs upfront in reno’s where retrofits are needed, but savings are big in operational $$ and certainly it’s better for the environment. In new construction, quite often these “beefy” walls and efficient windows are no more expensive than other options, with the same operational benefits and quite often tax incentives 😊 All the love from Vancouver BC! ❤
Heaven has another fur angel! Those beautiful memories and love for her will carry you through this difficult time. Hugs from the US. thoughts and prayers
You guys do you! Nobody cares what the keyboard warriors have to say. We are here for your story, and I find it all so intriguing, I can’t wait for the next podcast.
I think you have every right to be so very proud of all your hard work and the success that has come directly from that. So take the negative with a grain of salt, I have found it mostly stems from jealousy anyway. We are baby boomers but in exactly the same situation as you guys with rental properties and short term rentals that we have just sold because people are so demanding, it's exhausting. We are in Australia which is also so similar to Canada in so many ways and it is so hard and the government just takes so much tax it's crazy. We have worked so very hard too and are now punished and frowned upon, as I said it's exhausting and sad and frustrating, so I know exactly how you feel. So celebrate your wins and be happy because we have no idea what is around the next corner unfortunately. I love you guys and everything you do. You have integrity and you bring a lot of joy to the world so thank you for being you!
I love going in deeper with you both.😉👍❤️
This is an excellent topic. It is always amazing to me how the great financial rewards “luck” always has a lot of really hard work, lessons learned , courage to keep going .. and why it always surprises those seeking financial security!
Many smart moves equal success, bravo
I always love your videos ❤️
Your voices are so soothing and you have such a beautiful faces too me❤
Don't feel guilty or let other people's impulsive comments bring shade on your very smart financial progress.
Genius idea, I think this is going to become more and more common!
They do that alot in Australia
This is becoming more common in the States where more states are allowing the construction of accessory dwellings on the property.
@@jacksg1809and the government just caught on and is going to regulate it now
You guys are my absolute favorite! How you only have 33k subscribers is shocking! Pay No Attention to the haters. Their hate is about THEM! Not you!
❤
If you are new to Tyler & Todd this is their 2nd channel that just started up maybe 3 months ago. 33k isn't to shabby. Check out their original channel. Tyler & Todd.
their main channel has several hundred thousand subscribers; this channel is less then 6 months or so old so they are doing great!
As someone who worked hard and got my home at the age of 25 I often hear
" oh you are so lucky to have gotten a house when you did" luck /timing yes but it was also hard work behind it.
This was my Favorite Tangent so far. You two are a joy to listen to! I really hope the younger generation is listening to you guys....
Truly means a lot to hear that! Thanks Gerard ❤️
Thanks Robin, so appreciated!
Unbelievable...why am I not shocked that the politicians did nothing to help? Perhaps they were in cahoots with that corporate owner!
@@walstib4455 Big business runs the country not the governments. It's profit over people and greed with multinationals.
So glad we were able to answer that question!
My goodness, be proud of what the two of you have accomplished!!!
You two are smart and humble. I appreciate your approach to investing in your future years.
💰💵🤑💲My grandparents became millionaires by buying a house and paying it off then continuing to pay the payments into a savings account. The same thing with automobiles. Then they would buy farmland and sharecrop it. After 50 years of doing this they retired millionaires. ‼️💚
Wowww!!! Good for them!!
Absolutely!!! Also - if in the USA you can lock your mortgage rate in for 25 or 30 years, why can’t we??
@@tangentswithtylerandtodd make it make sense! It's crazy what our government gets away with!
Helpful resources: “Economics in One Lesson” by Harry Hazlett, “Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?” by Richard J. Maybury, and Ron Paul’s “End the Fed.”
*The AMERICAN government. 😉 But Canada has a similar system...resulting in the exact same problem!
I'm a retired realtor, I so much admire every approach you have embarked on.

Love how Eddie always comes up on the couch, he knows you will be there for an hour and can get his snuggles!!
Eddie is so invested in your conversation. 😂😂

I'm adding to my first statement - y'all do such skilled, careful and creative work on your projects - the garden, the ponds, the roads etc pretty much everything - whatever you feel you need to do for yourselves - y'all have to live with it - I'll support whatever you do - y'all tend to see the best in most people - so do you❣

I think if I ever moved to the US, New Mexico would be near the top of the list. So beautiful!
Hope to welcome you to New Mexico some day ☺️
You guys are growing on me and I can’t decide which I love more, these talks or your channel videos. Oh well, who am I to choose 💋
Tyler so nice to see you take off your reverse baseball cap!! Lovely to see your blond/red locks.

Be proud of what the two of you have accomplished in your young lives. Screw the people that have issues. You have worked very hard in every aspect. In my opinion you guys are very mindful and responsible in all of your choices. Great job !!!!!
Hi guys! I'm really loving these 'Tangents'! Your content and that on your regular UA-cam channel is awesome!
Thanks so much for that!
Long term rentals are a nightmare I hated being a landlord ! Your young , that a positive on your side ❤
Ups and downs for sure!
Negative comments are from people who wish they were as smart and able as you.
Some people are just not worth the air time.
Have a wonderful day ❤
Thanks Debby, hope you have a lovely day too xoxo
You can be so proud of yourselves. You worked so hard for it! People with negative comments are just jealous.
I love that you are letting your gray hairs show.
I cannot get over how much Ty's sides have gone grey...I'm kinda here for it tbh LOL
It’s a little annoying how good the greys look on you.. mine just makes me look haggard 😂
I could listen to you two talk about anything. Thanks for opening up on this topic - truly LOVE this podcast. I look forward to it every Wednesday!
Keep the episodes coming... always a great relax for me both Sunday and Wednesday.
Oh, can’t wait for this episode. Sounds like it’s gonna be a good one….but then again, they are all good. See you tomorrow T&T. 😀
See you there, Jan ❤❤❤
I just love you guys and your story. I'm so proud of your ambition and tenacity. You're a both a beautiful example of what hard work can bring. It's obvious in your relationship and your approach to life. Those with negative comments are from those who want it all handed to them with no effort on their part at all. Keep doing what you do just the way you want to do it. Love you two so much❤❤❤

I left Reddit because it was just getting too vicious
. I started a positive comments post for a UA-cam couple that I followed for the last seven years who are getting horrible comments…and it was shut down by a moderator after 6 negative commenters came from the negative thread and started posting all kinds of BS. Calling me delusional and a drunk etc
I wrote the moderator asking why my positive thread was shut down and why the negative comments weren’t sighted.

Tea Time:
Immediately I was GET OUT OF THERE.
Further evaluation means LOOK at the timeline, the setup, the ask…
Girl meets girl that’s already married.
Girl is brought into marriage.
Girl is to be made guilty of not going to “love them” or “sacrifice” after all they’ve done for her and have their baby?
That’s a lot of manipulation. It seems as if it was intentional.
Married Girl makes girl fall in love with her, and then introduces her to a triangle…
Triangulation: that’s a little too “by the narcissistic personality disorder playbook” for me.
You will never, ever catch me hating on the two of you. I truly admire what you have accomplished and I don't think you have hurt anybody.

Don't cut yourself short, Todd. You're more intelligent, than you give yourself credit for.❤
You boys are definitely yin and yang.

In new construction, quite often these “beefy” walls and efficient windows are no more expensive than other options, with the same operational benefits and quite often tax incentives 😊
All the love from Vancouver BC!
