  • We bought a cabin and are moving into it! After spending the last 4 years living off grid, we knew that it was time to make a change!
How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

This video feels so bittersweet to be sharing with you all…this isn’t in a million years how we expected things to go but after 4 years, we knew it was time. It was incredibly difficult to explain all the different layers and reasons behind making this decision, so if you’re left with lingering questions after watching this, we’re going to be sharing the full story on Wednesday’s podcast episode! Today, we wanted to focus on sharing our new home with you and kicking off this next chapter…also, only have a mattress on the floor but I can tell you, not having to build our bed each night before going to bed has been the BEST part so far. Cannot wait to hear what you all think of this timber frame cottage and to start this next chapter together ❤

As a mom of 5 I can tell you that you are right that no surrogate or adoptive mom would want their kid to live in a tent during a Nova Scotia winter. yes, life is about exploring, learning and often changing ourselves and our life plans. Off grid, do-it-youself places are, imho, often romanticised and many inconveniences are glossed over. Comfort and convenience go a long way, esp in a very cold place. Good on ya, lads.

@@tylerandtoddTerrible, the basement floor was flooded, the patio has to be completely replaced because of rot, now the dishwasher doesn't work and flooded the kitchen - while you had many problems living on the old homestead which you never shared with us and we can understand why you elected not to share those problems with us, how many unseen problems do you face in the new cottage. You both deserve happiness because we now know you both have been through so much, but you are still firmly committed to each other and that is what makes you so special - you will solve the problems in the new place and it will provide you with much more comfortable surrounding but realistically - how many problems can you both take while wishing to simply live a happy life together with your "children".

Tree topper - place on the tree before it is put up? I have a photo of my father attempting to put a paper star made by my then 9 y/o daughter using a broom handle from the loft. Their little house in the forest had very ceilings in the main living area. (they also had a tower) Rather an unconventional house but they loved it. As did I. It was very, very hard to let it go.

When we bought a new house last year, we knew the deck (built in 1982) had to go. There was so much rot and building codes have really improved since then. It wasn't safe so it was removed. Had a new, larger deck done and half of it is a screened porch. For us, it has completely enhanced the house into a home. Can't wait to see what you create!

The land was always intended to be an income property, where they also had a house. Since they have no idea when the container house will be done (it's already been delayed for years, through no fault of theirs), after years of living where they were, they just need a break. When the container house is eventually done, they will either move into there and turn the cabin into a rental property, or they'll stay where they are, and the container house will be added to the income-generating buildings they will have on the land now and in the future.

I hope we can offer advice (when you ask for it), but I am not here to judge you. You do what is right for you, based on the information you have at the time, how you are feeling, what is going on. I appreciate your story about acquiring a cabin, and your excitement for this new venture, but hope that you will continue to finish the project we have been following with you for the past few years! Having grown up in Eastern Ontario on a farm that included a smallish lake, I do recall the peace of wandering to the shore on a Sunday afternoon to check on the great blue herons and loons that were our summer neighbours! There were not a lot of motorboats around to disturb the peacefulness of a Sunday afternoon, so it truly was a calming sanctuary.

Congratulations! The house is stunning. I can totally understand the need for a warm place in winter. The cold gets you after a while. I grew up in a half-timbered farmhouse built in 1756. Although it was beautiful, there were gaps between the timbers where you could see daylight. In the winter it was so cold that a glass of water next to the bed would be frozen in the morning. Then I moved to a lovely tiny house on a mountain. When it snowed it was accessible only on foot. Having to walk 1 km in the morning to get to work and then back in the afternoon, carrying all the groceries was exhausting. Both houses had to be heated with wood fires. After four years I was fed up with it. These days I want something warm in winter where I can turn on the heating. Hope you'll be very happy in your new home!

    • @tylerandtodd
      @tylerandtodd  6 місяців тому +16

"can turn on heating" is SO true..it's hard for people to understand how over time the work involved with providing the every day essentials (heat, water, electricity) gets tiring. It makes it more tiring and difficult to do everything else that goes into living life.

@@tylerandtodd I grew up in a "camp" in the 70s. We had water when the spring out back collected enough water to puddle and the pooled water would make pressure for the house. We flushed our modern toilet by dumping the five gallon bucket of water into the back of it and then flushing. Today I sometimes catch myself turning on the water in my house and just letting the hot water run for no reason whatsoever. I will stop, just before leaving the bathroom, and think to myself " that why did I do that?" I totally understand.

My husband and I owned a restaurant for five years and remodeled it the final year. When the rebranding was done so were we. People didn't understand but we felt it in our souls. That was six years ago and we have zero regrets. I'm happy for you both for always following your hearts.

Nice! Of course, I don't know what you paid for it, but the location and the house have great potential. There is, as you are aware, some maintenance and care, but it is not the first house you buy and therefore you know how to inspect. You probably have a future plan for the house, but right now you just want to live there. I think it's a good decision considering how you've lived in the last few years. And as you say, now you can concentrate on getting The Land finished and not live in the middle of all the construction. Without having been to the place, it feels like a good investment. Congratulations! 👍 I will be listening on Wednesday.

I posted this on FB this morning about myself, after watching your video today this most certainly also applies to you both. I wish you both much happiness.
“A very good friend of mine told me one day, you are living your best life, I can see it. I told her yes I am and it only took me 56 years to get here.
I realized though, it’s not about how long it takes you to get to your best life, it’s about the lessons learned along the way. It’s about the people who have influenced you and those who love you, past and present .
We all go down different paths and some of us have taken detours. But in the end, life is a journey and not a marathon. Frankly I’m happy that I took the rough roads, detours and the path less traveled because it has led me to a place of self realization, self respect and to the life I now share with my husband.
    MY BEST LIFE! ❤️”

Collins glass: It is commonly used to serve sparkling cocktails, especially long drinks like the Tom Collins or John Collins. Its cylindrical shape, narrower and taller than a highball glass, keeps the drink carbonated longer by reducing the surface area of the drink. It is a recommended glass for serving an espresso and tonic in. HiBall glass: A highball glass is a glass tumbler used to serve 'tall' cocktails and other mixed drinks that contain a large proportion of a non-alcoholic mixer, and are poured over ice. It is often used interchangeably with the Collins Glass, although the highball glass is shorter and wider in shape.
