I am 84 and I think this latest IOS features have transformed both the iPad and phone, especially the phone. Having now down downloaded it I love. Asked my 17 year old grand daughter and asked her today if she had downloaded it, she said yes and agreed with me, she is also loving it. Regarding a calculator my 3 year old iPad has always had a calculator app.
New subscriber, Rich. I’m 70 and just now semi-retired. I have been a farm and ranch broker for 20 years in Central Oregon. I use an iPad Pro M2. I have always been an early adopter - I still have my first palm pilot from 1984. I am going to enjoy your content, I can tell. Jim
Thanks! I've fooled around with so many different mics trying to get things to sound good. So nice to have someone notice! Thanks so much for watching!
Hello Rich thank you for the information. I’m having problems with taking notes since the os18 update. I’m sure it’s a setting but I cannot figure it out. The problem is the system is changing my hand writing to type text. I just want it to stop. Just let me keep my own hand written notes. 😂
I had an ipad for a couple of years in order travel. While still doing home computing on a very slow / stuck windows PC. Shared with hubby. For years. Then I took the plunge and bought myself a used Macbook . It took me a while but not once did I regret. Hubby still on his tortoise machine 😅.. 🛠️
Great little video - thank you! Like you I’m signed up to the public beta programme but after downloading latest release tonight your video popped up on YT - great timing. The pace is just right too.
Great review of the newest helpful features on ISO. I think a videos on the basics of Numbers and Pages would be helpful to us older folks. For those of us trying to make a transition from MS to ISO, the basics of entering data into spread sheet and word document are quite different. I have looked at a few but, they all go so fast. Your explanation’s and demonstration are very helpful and they certainly are not rushed.
How is it that I have never seen your videos come up in my searches or on the home page of the UA-cam App, since I spend more time on here than I care to admit? I won’t miss them now because I subscribed. I can’t tell you how nice it is to watch videos about the iPad mainly, but also the iPhone more now that I plan to upgrade from the iPhone Pro Max 11 this year, that the creator doesn’t talk a mile a minute. I was excited to get the public beta too! I have been a beta tester for the iPad for years, but this one, I couldn’t wait for.
Great video. The iPad has become much more usable in the last few years. The password manager is excellent - I do hope it is included with the update to Mac OS and syncs with Keychain? I'm not fussed about the Photos App or the pretty Wallpaper which are just fluff to me personally. One thing I do wish Apple would look at is the Books App - it’s far too clunky. I read lots of PDF reports and papers so I use it as a PDF reader mainly but it can be a challenge to get the PDF 'into' Books.
Good summary and demos. Will this work on my iPad Mini 6 ? And, can I use Math Notes with the Handwriting to Text feature, rather than leaving my handwriting on the display?
@@RichBowlin would like to see the results if your tests. I’ve never felt the need to spend exorbitantly for an Apple Pencil or Apple Pencil Pro because I’m not an artist. I’ve always got by with a cheap Amazon stylus. However, I love this Smart Script feature because like you, I take lots of handwritten notes …and my handwriting is horrendous.
Rich I have noticed that you never use a keyboard. Have you tried the Apple Magic Keyboard (outrageous expensive for the product), or Logitech's keyboards. I have used the Logitech keyboards for a long time but this year I updated my iPad Air 2022 to an iPad Pro (m4 chip) and decided to try the Apple Magic Keyboard. Quite honestly I prefer the Logitech keyboards. Pros and Cons: Pros 1- The keyboard is very comfortable to use 2- It works when writing foreign languages (I do that a lot) 3- The trackpad is smaller 4- Their support in general is very good. 5- It really protects the iPad better than the Apple Magic Keyboard. Cons: Too heavy but if you use it mostly on a desk setup the weight is not a problem
It looks like it'll be an iCloud Keychain replacement. I think the underlying part is still keychain, Apple just finally built a nice interface around it.
I've heard a couple of people who have apparently reviewed the new Apple photo app with IOS18 and they're not very happy with it. Have you ever given any thought to looking for alternatives to Apple apps in a case like this. Obviously I don't know much about the app but if it's as complicated and as it's being portrayed and you like to keep things simple maybe the new answer would be here's another app that might be more suitable for people like me who just want to keep it real simple. Just a thought. Also, this may be outside your area of focus but I was watching one of your iOS file videos the other day and it dawned me that while it seemed to work well for the iPad if you make all the changes for your iPad how does it affect the file system if you have another Apple computer such as a Mac mini or a MacBook Pro. Maybe someday you could get people like me squared away
When will Apple put a simple feature in photo’s whereas you put individual photo’s into separate folders and then do not leave the photo in the library section. Therefore makes it easier to find the specific folder to see specific photo’s
Wow! look at that! iPad is finally getting some of the Android tablet features. I've tried using iPad but they are too far behind a good Samsung S9 Ultra. Ditch your iPad and get a good, full featured, Samsung Tablet.

Apple product fan but the calculator situation really chaps my backside. For years, they’ve been telling us that they didn’t include a calculator on the iPad because they wanted to do something fitting of Apple and the iPad, something great. This omission has been a real sore point for us iPad people. It seemed surreal in its conspicuous absence. So what did they finally do? Nothing more enlarged version of what they put on the iPhone in iOS 18. Nothing special for the iPad, nothing fancy. And quite frankly, I’m glad. @@RichBowlin yeah I like the draw feature, innovative. Not sure how useful it will be to me but time will tell. My problem is that in interviews they said several times that they wanted to do something special for the iPad and that’s why it didn’t come with a native calculator. I wish Apple had left the Photos app as it was before, or give one the option to leave it alone. I constantly refer to the app and it is now becoming too complicated to use. This is an unnecessary change.
Everybody thinks Math Notes is a calculator feature. It’s not. It’s a Notes feature. All the button in the Calculator app does is switch to the Notes app. Just open up Notes and do the same thing. Notice also that there’s no integration between Math Notes and the calculator. You can’t copy-paste results back and forth between them; you can’t reference the results in one from the other; and so forth. I’m actually finding it more convenient to open up the calculator and Notes and arrange them side by side. You can then use the Math Notes feature in Notes and the calculator remains visible.
I have to be honest, that sometimes these features are nothing more than fluff, smoke and mirrors. I am not interested whatsoever on changing my wallpaper. I would think that Apple would be served much better by working on the technical aspect of their program to ensure that the bugs are cleaned out of it before they even introduce it to the public. Changing things like wallpaper and things of that sort is just absolutely asinine in my opinion. I use the same wallpaper that I’ve used for the last 10-15 years that I’ve had an iPad. It serves no useful purpose in my view to be changing it. As a matter of reference, I’m 74 years old and I could care less about that kind of stuff. I want the program to work, and I wanted to work well without the bugs that are inevitable when they introduce a new operating system.
