  • Locals in San Juan, Puerto Rico, share the top reasons why you need to learn Spanish before moving to the island.
Here are the top reasons why you should learn Spanish before moving to Puerto Rico:
Deeper Cultural Understanding: Learning Spanish is crucial for getting to know the culture, history, and rich blend of native and African cultures present in Puerto Rico.
Integration and Connection: If you plan to live on the island permanently, learning Spanish is encouraged for better integration into the community. It allows you to connect with people on a deeper level, understand local customs, and be involved in cultural and political events.
Requirement for Acceptance: Some locals feel that if you genuinely want to move to Puerto Rico and be a part of the community, knowing Spanish is a requirement. Without it, you might not be as welcome, especially if your intentions are exploitative in nature.
Communication and Multilingualism: Knowing Spanish is emphasized for effective communication with everyone and understanding what's happening around you. Being multilingual is seen as an advantage, and learning the language opens doors not only in Puerto Rico but also in other Spanish-speaking regions.
Ease of Integration: While it's acknowledged that some Americans can live in Puerto Rico without speaking Spanish, it is believed that learning the language would make the integration process easier and more enriching.
Practical Necessity: There are situations, especially in government transactions, where knowing Spanish is unavoidable. Relying on someone else to translate might not always be feasible.
Social Connections: Learning Spanish enhances your ability to connect with people, make friends, and establish daily connections. Simple gestures like saying "Buen provecho" contribute to social acceptance and enrich your overall experience.
Personal Enrichment: Learning Spanish is not just about practicality; it's about personal growth and enrichment. It allows you to fully immerse yourself in the local lifestyle, making your stay in Puerto Rico more meaningful.

I'm half Puerto Rican, and I've thought about maybe trying to move out there. I haven't visited since I was little, but I've been wanting to get more in touch with my roots the past few years.
My Spanish is still mid-level, but I went to Argentina for a week by myself and managed to survive🤷‍♂️. I'm actually way more nervous about the flying roaches 😬

Oh you would do fine with mid level Spanish, especially in the San Juan area most people can speak English. But I’ve got to be honest, I don’t see too many flying roaches 😁 I’ve seen maybe 4 in the past two years

@@dougkalagian That's good to know! 😁 I heard that they're everywhere. Then again, my mom grew up in the mountains, so it's probably more common there than the city

You have to go to Gringolandia if you don't speak the language but Gringolandia is in Dorado, a very limited place.

dougkalagian I see what's happening on the island, and it saddens that it's becoming like Hawaii. The natives are disappearing
