I don't know how it happened, I just toss 5 rock pikmin to the violet candypop bud and proceed to pluck them and then the glitch started, I tried to recreate the glitch but I couldn't.
The fact we know it can happen means its only a matter of time before people find reproducible setups. It could be mildly useful in speedruns to a degree
Looks to me like it has something to do with both the player character and oatchi bumping into each other, both trying to occupy the same space. It's possible that it's screwing with the way the game handles plucking and so they keep plucking the same spot?
@@princeofhyrule2205 You don't need to do sage trials to consistently get Purple Pikmins. Go to the Serene Shores map. Finish the Engulfed Castle cave.There are 2 purple blooms right near the exit. From there on, re-enter the cave with max blue Pikmins. Select sublevel 5. Convert 10 pikmins, use the jelly nearby to give them flowers if you want and leave the cave. Rinse and repeat.
Can we all give oatchi a round of applause and appreciate his efforts. Purple pikmin canonically weigh 10 pikmin worth per purple. So with 100 purple pikmin on his back, I'd say he's fairly strong... Still being able to run and jump. Oh also, I'm surprised this isn't forming a singularity with how dense the matter must be in this area. After all, it's also canon that a single purple pikmin is enough to collapse dimensions.

I'm amazed that the animations for leaving the cave floor actually worked properly with that many pikmin. Was very funny seeing them still jumping down even as the ship flew down and it faded to black
The number of new Pikmin not being shown isn't a bug, it's because when you use a Candypop Bud, the Pikmin obtained aren't considered new, wich is normal because they are simply reconverted Pikmin.

The explanation for why the game didn't count them in the results screen is just because the game doesn't account for pikmin lost/gained via candypop buds. It's a bit annoying tbh because it's easy to lose track of numbers in caves where candypops regularly appear.
The reason you didnt see them when you went down is because all ~2,000 or so were on Oatchi's back. You could rush into an enemy and launch an entire civilization of Purple pikmin onto it if you wanted to

imagine being a creature enjoying your day and then you're just bombarded by heavy little purple dudes sent in by a yellow dog and a weird creature thing sitting on said dog for a moment... what would you do in that situation
The reason it slows down when you get closer to the herd is level of detail (LOD), the game dynamically lowers geometric and animation detail when the camera gets further away from the models to save resources
Overdraw is also a main issue on switch. Large portions of the screen being filled by tris that draw over others dozens of times is the likely culprit here if I would have to guess. (you often see this kind of slowdown on switch games with lots of particles or where a transparent or dithered surface blocks most of the screen). Even with a depth prepass the fragment shader would have to be executed on the pikmin leaves (and probably the whole model) to use a fragment discard operation. Not to mention the transparent glow effect when pikmin are inactive. This is a nightmare scenario for switch.
It's interesting seeing the counter in the bottom right loop back after 1000 but the number under the Purple Pikmin icon keeping track of the real number

They don't count as new Pikmin but they do count how many die if you let them. At most you can usually get about 120-140 max to actually follow you. The rest will sorta just stand there.
Just goes to show we could absolutely have more pikmin than 100, nintendo just needs to make a beefier system, I would love to see a gigantic group of thousands of pikmin swarming a human sized monster, the dandori battles would look like war.

There was another way to do it by using purple pimmin to ground slam the bud before it closed and it would let you reuse it this is an awesome glitch

I noticed Pikmin 4 doesn't count candy pop conversions in the stats, so that explains why it said you didn't get any
