I was 15 yrs old when I first heard her sing this song and it moved me emotionally. I’m 67 yrs old now and it still does. Her beautiful voice and delivery of the song is just fantastic.
Beautiful lyrics written by Jimmy Webb. Roberta Flack's studio album named Chapter Two was released on August 12,1970. The personnel on the album included the great Donny Hathaway,King Curtis,Eric Gale,Hubert Laws,Marshall Hawkins, Chuck Rainey and other talented musicians. She also recorded a beautiful version of "Just Like a Woman" written by Bob Dylan.
Roberta Flack has a soulful presence in her delivery that is uniquely higher in vibration. So richly soulful. I love you Queen Sister Roberta Flack💫🌍🪐💥💫
My favorite song of hers, from Chapter Two. That album cover, wearing her big natural, will always be etched in my memory. A sad song of love, loss, and letting go...
I am a music nut and I read or heard she was classically trained. You hear it in the way she plays and the way she sings. It is hauntingly serene, smooth, and graceful. The music of my childhood. Incredible😍😍😍😍
Yes. She is a graduate of Howard University (she had a full piano scholarship). Majored in music education after changing from piano to vocal to music Ed.
First heard this song years ago on Bridget Jones Diary sung by Nina Simone and loved it. Just now hearing Roberta sing it and loving her version even more!!!!!
I heard this again on the H&M Netflix series. It's always been a favorite of mine along with so many Roberta Flack songs! She takes you on a journey in all of her songs! Just beautiful ❤️
Never heard this song until I watched Harry and MM Documentary, I thought, what a soothing song and how appropriate it's use for Prince Harry and MM, how Documentary
Yes she does and I am dumbfounded. I have been a Roberta fan since the beginning and will someone tell me how in the h**l did I miss this one? Especially since I loved everything on First Take and play it constantly even these days. When this came out, I was 16 years old, but I still should have noticed it. Then, Linda Rondstadt did a beautiful version of it on her Get Closer album, now I'm just hearing this by Roberta and I'm sorry to say it but Linda, you've owned this for most of my life, but the crown has been passed and it was done before you even did it. Long live this song by Roberta, but both were great versions.
It's 2024 Oh my goodness how absolutely Beautiful. I've listened to this many, many times recorded by Tom Jones, and it so awesome. 💋 But this is the pure R&B/Soul version. It's absolutely beautiful 🌹
I'm back!...Have to watch multiple times each times....it's just so beautiful and serene. Ms. Flack is an extraordinary artist. Feel so blessed she is in my lifetime!🥰
This is when I really loved Roberta when she was a soulful jazz singer in the beginning her first two albums First Take and Chapter Two are classics she performed at my college in 1970 she was amazing she sang Laura Nyro's Save the country as her encore after a well deserved standing O 😊
Do What You Gotta Do By Roberta Flack Songwriter: Jimmy Webb Man, I can understand how it might be Kinda hard you to love a girl like me I don't blame you much for wanting to be free I just wanted you to know That I've loved you better that your own kin did From the very start it's my own fault What happens to my heart I've always known you'd go And do, do what you gotta do My wild sweet love Though it may mean that I'll never Kiss those sweet lips again Pay that no mind Find that dappled dream of yours Come on back and see me when you can Now I know, I know it'll makes you feel sad And know it'll makes you feel so bad They say you don't treat me like you should They got ways to make you feels no good They got no way to know I've had my eyes wide open from the very start You never, never, never, you never lied to me The part of you that they'll never see Is the part you've shown to me Go on and do, do what you gotta do My wild sweet love Though it may mean that I'll never Kiss those sweet lips again Pay that no mind Find that dappled dream of yours Come on back and see me when you can Yeah, yeah-yeah, oh, yeah Oh, ooh, oh-yeah
I've never seen the Harry & Meghan thing that brought most people here hahaha. My Mom had Roberta's "Chapter Two" album when I was child (she still has that original vinyl). I've always loved her rendition of this song and hoped someday there would be live footage of her performing it. THANK YOU for this amazing Post!! P.S. This clip is actually from her 1970 performance at Montreux
Ditto, except it wasn’t my Mom, but my older sister who introduced me to this song/ album. She was in college & I felt so “grown up” listening to (and liking) this album. It’s only grown deeper & sweeter with time, age & experiences. ❤
This song was written by Jimmy Webb. (By the time I get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, MacArthur’s Park, Up Up and Away) I met him and asked if he ever heard her version, and Nina Simone’s version, he said yes.

Do What You Gotta Do
By Roberta Flack
Songwriter: Jimmy Webb
Man, I can understand how it might be
Kinda hard you to love a girl like me
I don't blame you much for wanting to be free
I just wanted you to know
That I've loved you better that your own kin did
From the very start it's my own fault
What happens to my heart
I've always known you'd go
And do, do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I'll never
Kiss those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can
Now I know, I know it'll makes you feel sad
And know it'll makes you feel so bad
They say you don't treat me like you should
They got ways to make you feels no good
They got no way to know
I've had my eyes wide open from the very start
You never, never, never, you never lied to me
The part of you that they'll never see
Is the part you've shown to me
Go on and do, do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I'll never
Kiss those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can
Yeah, yeah-yeah, oh, yeah
Oh, ooh, oh-yeah
Beautiful
Thank you so much. I've been wanting to watch her perform this song live. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for posting this treasure... her voice so strong and pure, instantly recognizable

Music is amazing! Whoever does it but Roberta owns this version
My uncle asked me to send him this song and he will come home he was in the Vietnam War he came home and volunteered to go back

@@davidriggs1470 Nice comment but Roberta makes ever song her own Levi should own it he did it first! She tells the story better.
Nina Simone version.
My favorite singer of all time. Very disappointed in this arrangement though.
