So, assuming 16 ATACMs that's circa 8 million bucks. The tally so far: 4 aircraft, at least two irreplaceable - value maybe 40 million or so, that's value for money already but when you add in a HALF BILLION dollar radar (also BTB irreplaceable) and a pair of 10 million dollar launchers with millions in missiles plus god knows what munitions that were in the warehouse this was one hell of a value for money strike.

    • @toby9999

True, though comparing dollar values isn't the whole story. It's what damage those jets could have done, but now they can't. And also, how long does it take to replace a jet vs. a bunch of missiles. That said, I'm stating the obvious, and you likely already knew it.

That 8 million isnt a net loss for America.. mainly going to American companies who make the missiles, taxed by America, and the what's not taxed is going to American workers and spent by Americans, funding other businesses and employees boosting the American economy. Also boosts the security of the American defence infrastructure.
It's been argued by economists that these weapon distributions not only boost USA defence but also are a net gain to the USA economy and employment.

Belbek is an airfield that Russia uses to patrol the black sea. It doesn't do flights into ukraine from there what was the point of hitting that when they're getting smashed on the eastern front and not on the northern? Should have used those atacms to take out Russia in their "new offensive" since border guards knew Russia was coming but ukraine didn't pull anyone (cuz they don't have people to pull) from other fronts...
If karhkiev gets surrounded will wasting atacms in crimea really he a win? If it was an airfield that jets were taking off and bombing ukraine then yeah good job but it wasn't. Its an airfield that Russia patrols the black sea with, Russia has done more damage to us drones in the area than ukraine.. literally day by day ukraine is losing ground and doing wasteful attacks like this?.... mind blowing how ignorant ukraine is.

@@nitraM321 you're going to have to be realistic when you're quoting stuff. I don't buy what ukraine claims it's causality rate is on Russian soldiers, you do remember this same country tried to pass off the "ghost of kiev" yes Russia pushed in with roughly 50k soldiers there was absolutely no opposition by ukraine they literally ran away, thats irrefutable. Do I think within a couple days ukraine moved soldiers to the north and kia/wia 10k Russian soldiers? No lol. The one thing we both know for a fact is Russia and ukraine are both lying about loses/victories. Can 50k soldiers surround karhkiev? Yes. It doesn't matter if you have a million people in the city, all you have to do is control the roads in and the people will be starved out. Do I think that Russia will leave it at 50k people? No. Do I think karhkiev is even the main objective? No its to have northern strongholds to surround Eastern lines. Russia realizes going to the coast likely isn't going to happen however the oblasts they control right now are theirs and ukraine isn't getting them back. So they push south and all the oblasts that are pro russia they'll control it totality. If trump gets into office he'll tell nato to stfu and make russia/ukraine sign a peace treaty rewriting the lines and all these people in ukraine will stop dying, trump will push for ukraine to not be admited to nato in that agreement and it ends. Ukraine will never win this war, the numbers are against them, they're desperate for people. They would struggle if they got every single male that fled ukraine back into ukraine and trained up. They simply lack the numbers to win
As far as the base, umm yeah it's in Russian controlled ukraine and has been since?? 2014? And those jets are closely monitored being on the coast they literally went up and took out a US drone, it's part of the blacksea navy that patrols the blacksea, they're not running ops into ukraine. If they were they'd be bombing Odessa. They don't do bombing runs they patrol the black sea, that's been confirmed. So kind of a waste.
As far as the "crimea is ukraine" ahh you know that most of eastern ukraine voted to be apart of Russia right? They speak Russian not Ukrainian. They're not loyal ukrainians, they don't want to be Ukrainian. Does nato acknowledge crimea as Russia? No has it been in Russian Control for a decade? Yes... is anyone in crimea doing anything to thwart the Russian army? No.. why? Because they don't care about ukraine. Soo... let's be real if the people don't want to be Ukrainian are they really Ukrainian?

Let me correct you there - yes ruzzia had ~100 mig31 of all types, but it isn't clear how many of them were operational, hard to say, but probably only half. By the way isn't some wild speculation, older jets have low operational readiness e.g. German Tornados barely get 30% readiness before retirement... although that is Germany we are talking about, ruzzia also had poor readiness for air force, so 50% maybe even optimistic.
However, only 10 or 11 were converted to mig31k variant which is capable of launching kinzal, it was previously reported that only 8 out of 31k variants were operational... and I would bet that belbeck had specifically 31k variants there, not the older random jets... because in principle mig31 is "interceptor" and there is nothing really to intercept over the Crimea. It can't intercept missiles (depends on definition I guess, some say they have just intercepted ATACM by the way of being hit by them), it would be useless in intercepting drones or even cruise missiles... not that it can't intercept cruise missiles, but it would be just poor choice, because mig31 is high-altitude mach 3+ interceptor, made to intercept high flying spy planes or bombers, I guess it could be used to intercept other aircraft, but that would require Ukraine to fly into ruzzian controlled zone, which they obviously won't do... and using it to intercept subsonic cruise missile would be like using sledgehammer to crush an ant... it isn't even very manoeuvrable, so not great "dogfighter". As such using literally any other aircraft would be better Su27/30, mig29 etc. As such I am quite confident those mig31 destroyed were the 31k specifically.
Meaning this is likely 25% reduction in the fleet of kinzal capable launch platforms - its HUGE!

      As information develops.
A salvo of approx 10 ($17 million) missiles launched against the Crimean airbase apparently, it looks like 4 destroyed jets now (est. $132.8 million), a S400 AA missile system damaged/destroyed (est. $800 million), and a fuel dump hit (cost unknown). Cluster munitions possibly used. Russia has about 96 (now 95) S-400 Triumf (NATO name SA-21 Growler), systems in total.
      Cost Ratio: 54.87 : 1
Given that a T-72B3 tank costs around $1M USD for Russia (albiet still pulling/refitting many from stocks). You can see that these are very high value targets and much more complex / difficult and time-consuming to replace industrially.

I find it interesting that in another conventional war, such as were common in the 20th century, a strike like this would have taken a major effort by manned aircraft to target an airbase so far behind the lines, or possibly a commando operation. Now, a handful of very accurate missiles can supply the same effect.
I REALLY hope NATO is thinking about the future, and how necessary an integrated air defense is going to be, from treetop all the way to out of the atmosphere.

Add to this that russian military jets generally are designed for a comparatively short service life of the fuselage as well as the engines. The currently ongoing process of rebuilding and modernizing up to 114 MiG-31B's to MiG-31BM variants strives to enhance the service life of the fuselages to 3,500 hours (by replacing 15 to 20 percent of the cell structure, according to the manufacturer) - that is not really a lot (and a full rebuild/modernisation like this is said to take up to one year per plane).

One of the things that strikes me in this war is the resilience in operability of airfields. In the 1980s and early1990s we always assumed that, against the Soviets, most if not all major Nato air bases in Europe would be wiped out completely and permanently within the first 48 hours of the war. Of course we then also assumed the soviet use of tactical nukes within the first week, should our air bases still exist by then.

You can see the pilot's image outlined with the black burn blast residue running around the remainder of his flung, shriveled decrepit body left in a heap on the ground, a little bit to the right of that darker black burned pavement.
