So many clever parallels with Jackson and the doctor (excluding obviously the copied information) they both suffered great trauma and lost family and both chose to run away and not look back. Jackson lost his mind trying to forget his tragedy and became an entirely different man and so did the doctor, the doctor regenerated a few times and found anything he could to distract himself just to have to not look back on what he lost
Nobody realises this, but this is the first time where we actually SEE clips of the first 8 Doctors in new who. Sure we saw drawings in the Journal of Impossible Things, and we met Sarah Jane of course, but this episode is the final cementing of the establishment of classic series being canon to New Who.
One thing I just realised doesn't make sense about this whose mind would take on the identity of the doctor if you're trying to avoid the pain of loss.
Probably because it was stolen from Daleks inside the void, who were in turn all imprisoned in the Genesis Ark at some point during the Time War. Considering that the Time War went on for god knows how long and the 8th Doctor was around for a fair bit of this time, it makes sense to assume that those Daleks were imprisoned before the 8th Doctor regenerated into the War Doctor, hence why none of them seemingly recognise the War Doctor as existing. Then again, they recognise the 9th Doctor which makes 0 sense, so I guess there's no point really thinking about this too deeply.
Brilliant acting from The guy who played Jackson Lake in this scene, and this was one of my favourite scenes from the 10th Doctor, but sadly devastating for J.L! 😔
There were a few more references such as the series 3 finale where the master talks to the doctor and says “Axons” and “Sea Devils” which were both 3rd Doctor Villains. And in Utopia where the Derek Jacobi master opens the watch you can hear Anthony Ainleys Laugh and A line from Roger Delgado.
I know he didn't exist at the time but if they stole this data from the Daleks then why isn't the War Doctor there. There's no way the Daleks would have no record of the version of the Doctor that fought them in the largest war they've ever had to fight.
