  • (sound pop) - "The Eternal Flame has now been transferred"
During a ceremony Oct. 29, John McHugh, the secretary of the Army, transferred the iconic JFK Eternal Flame from its temporary burner back to its permanent home in the circular stone at the 35th president's gravesite.
The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with its contractor partner, Meltech Inc., spent the past several months upgrading the old eternal flame, which had reached the end of its anticipated lifespan (nat pop clicking) and needed to be replaced.
"This process goes back to realizing and recognizing that this flame, which has been burning since 1967 on this site, needed replacement and getting this new flame up-to-date with various codes and engineering procedures to get it more reliable and dependable," said Col. Paul Olsen.
Crowds visiting the gravesite won't be able to see the majority of the upgrade work on new air and gas lines, as well as new safety controls out-of-view, but what they do see is a new burner assembly that was designed to keep the flame lit in all kinds of weather conditions.
Brian Swersky, owner of Gasman Services and Consulting, fabricated the burner.
"It's important to a lot of people that it be done correctly, and I knew I had the experience and the know-how to build a torch that would withstand the elements, there is a lot more to an eternal flame than most people realize," said Swersky.
Swersky says the flame is really two burners in one. The main burner burns pure gas, while the pilot burner relies on a precise mixture of air and gas vented through six ports on a pilot ring.
Each of these ports has an ignitor which sparks igniting the gas if the system detects a flame is absent. It's what ultimately keeps the flame from being extinguished by wind or rain.
"With us pre-mixing the air with the gas at the pilot ring we have a very consistent and stable eternal flame," Swersky said.
For the district, the upgrade marks another chapter in its novel-length history with the flame.
"We started in concept working with this flame in 1963 when requirement came to the corps." Olsen said.
With the flame back in its rightful spot, the cemetery's staff says the legacy of JFK will continue to inspire generations to come with a flame that burns bright.
"President Kennedy continues to inspire generations, and restoring this flame to its original condition guarantees that generations to come will continue to be inspired by the president's service to the country," said Col. Michelle Steward, Arlington National Cemetery's chief of staff.

Great vid on informing ppl how the amazing foresight of First Lady Mrs Kennedy had the great idea to keep the Eternal Flame, the light of JFK to continue to shine on for. Much respect to Jackie's entire plan of her husband funeral, the rider-less horse, to the music, the marching, and her dignity in a time that would make the strongest fall to their knees. She is what kept the country and world full of love, with the bittersweet sorrow, anger and disbelief of the daylight murder of her husband, father to her beautiful children, and much loved President to our country. May God continue to give the Kennedys the love and peace, together they deserve in Heaven. Amen.

Brian Swersky is an incredibly talented genius! The idea of an eternal flame seems almost impossible to fabricate due to weather, and upkeep in assuring it's constant presence!
Technology now a days is amazing but back in 1967 the reality of it seemed far too good to be true!
An eternal flame was and still is the most gifted object to truly honor President John F. Kennedy's memory!
He knew the risks of riding in an open limousine but his only concern was for the people to be able to see Jackie up close and clear!
In fact history says that just before boarding Air Force One in Fort Worth to Dallas he was briefed on the concerns regarding his safety and was met with tremendous resistance to keep the bubbletop roof on the limo and his response was so dignified!!!!
According to accounts by those who voiced their concerns to him that fateful day he responded....
"If someone wants to kill the president it doesn't take any great sharp shooter to pull it off! All one has to do is build a sniper's nest in a tall building and he could take out anybody!
I'm well aware of the risks but I want my people to be able to see my wife!
Her beauty comes first and foremost!
    My safety comes last!!!!!"
    - What other person would have the dignity to risk his own life to make his wife clearly visible to the American people and to the world??????

What in the world are you on about!?? President Kennedy was in no way at all "briefed" about his "safety concerns" nor did he give any sort of "dignified response". Seriously, where did you get such lies and absolute misinformed ideas. It was a Coup D'etat. It was planned since March 63. There is evidence and statements by S.S. stating the S.S detail ordered them to "stand back" and not ride on the JFK ordered handles and foot steps that he had modified for precisely assassination attempts. There is footage of S.S in Fort Worth and Dallas, jumping on the side of the car, then being yelled at to stand back, with the S.S. man putting both arms up in despair, asking why!? It is well known amongst the S.S. there that day, that the ones who were "in on it" and corrupt, such as Greer and Kellerman, literally slowed down on the exact moment the front neck wound hit JFK. Either through radio or signaling. And the ones who didn't know it then, were told by the head of detail, that President Kennedy had "requested" no DP motorcycle cops close to the car, and no S.S. AND they all found out it was lies. JFK did no such request or orders. Stop living in a dream world and do some research, as others who have done so for 30+ years, with classified Intel to prove this. The Warren 'Omission' report was a complete fabrication, where the men on the cOmmission board, were all ppl who hated JFK, the main one being Allen Dulles, former cia head, who JFK had fired several months earlier for his deceit and going ahead with the Bay of Pigs disaster. He and hoover were the ones who allowed or disregarded vital recorded statements from witnesses, and only allowed witnesses who were briefed or threatened to shut up and stick to the script. Many who met untimely deaths once they were used. This is all true and factual, with proof of receipt, and the truth needs to be known. If you don't have facts and can't back up your comments, don't spread untruths that you have absolutely no idea about.

Well brainiac, you come up with an eternal flame if you can. Which I highly doubt you could!! It's what Jackie asked for her husband's funeral, in a time of great, unimaginable grief.

@@Gigi1111Layna I imagine that the original comment alludes to the new burner, which aesthetically to be honest, looks like a sterno can. If Jackie were alive to see it herself, she would have wished for it to be more submerged like it originally was, rising from the stones in the visual symbolism of the Ancient Greeks which she tried to emulate in 1967.

I would have to agree with 2 of the previous commenters. I visited the site decades ago and was at the rope line, nearest to the flame. "Coming out of the stone" was a far more appropriate visual than the Sterno can look it has now.
There is, unfortunately, lots of pretend loyalty to our decorated WW2 Combat Veteran President. Recent aircraft carrier names are a further insult.
