My company was the first company to introduce the Kawasaki Jett Ski to the UK in 1980! For several years my company was the only company selling Jet Skis in the UK. I actually saw these machines being used in Florida. They were invented in America in 1977 using Japanese 2 stroke technology hence the tie up with Kawasaki. Eventually Kawasaki bought out the manufacturing rights . At that time., the only opposition was the Wet Bike made by Suzuki, a rather cumbersome affair that rode on skis! It was heavily promoted by the UK Suzuki motor bike champion Barry Sheen. The Jet Ski range initially started with just one model, the 440 and then a cheaper one cylinder version was produced, the 300 model which was a bit of a bone shaker. A little later, the 550 came in and was the most popular model. All stand ups but a set of floats was eventually introduced to aid stability for beginners. I was actually the first person in the Uk to be prosecuted for speeding on a Jet Ski in 1980 and the authorities didn’t really know how to classify the Ski! Most users imagine their sport to be a very recent invention but it is in fact over 40 years old! One thing has changed though, they are now more like mini boats than Jet skis!
