- With train 396, CSX GP30 4224 leading Chessie 6012 & 6105, clawing its way up the steepest part of Sand Patch grades west side in number 8 notch. We are at Keystone, Pa. On the rear is Chessie 8623 pushing hard to keep things rolling. January 28, 1990. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294...
What I know is that Chessie retained the 567D3 prime mover but derated it to 2000hp.Others however rebuilt it with 645 POWER assemblies
I was 9 when you shot this video. 13 years later when I made my first trip on that hill you would be lucky to see a GP30 in road service. Pretty much relegated to yard service as mother/slug units. Although we did use a mother/slug (GP30) set for connelsville helper power once.
CSX GP-30 IN STELTH GRAY PAINT! OMG
Not a true stealth as it has the blue paint.
The best part of the video..........NO HORN!!!! Thank you for that. Love to hear those two cycle EMD's in run 8 without being blasted by the horn.
The sound of horsepower👍👍👍
Nothing like it Dave! Thanks for watching...
Very Cool, Love 2nd Gen and 1st Gen Diesels !! I'm lucky enough to have seen many, there was a Med.sized Freight yard 5 miles from where I grew up in the 1960's as a kid and later when I was getting older started taking Photos with my own camera with my older Brother in 1974', so many good memories of the three major builders EMD, Alco and GE. I'm Not a big fan of today's "look a like" Wide Cab rolling computers !!! Lol
The good old days Ronnie. I'm not a big fan of the new stuff either, and don't go out chasing them much at all because of that. Same things for years. I try to head to shortlines that run the old stuff. Thanks for watching...
@@1jackdk Same here, love your site !!
Fantastic video of a site no longer to be seen. As always, thank you so much for sharing these gems of days gone by.
Man, you have some great classic videos, its history!! I love these old shots, and great camera work!! Memories!! Thanks, keep posting please, haha!!
Love that roar
The sound is outstanding!! Boy, it sure didn't sound like this when I was there! GREAT STUFF Jack, as always!
My two cents... Looks like 8623 had left front collision damage? A repair for Cumberland for sure.
And even though I'm a huge fan and historian, the WM was likely doomed as soon as B&O gained controlling interest. Although the Connellsville sub could've been used as an auxiliary line to Pittsburgh - it, and the P&LE Yough were at that time single-tracked and would've only carried certain types of freight. I don't believe that saving a few helpers and fuel would've offset the maintenance cost.
The B&O gained a controlling interest of the WM in the 1920s. The ICC granted them control in 1967.
Awesome 90's Train
Excellent, you don't here those motors working like that very often. Great stuff!
I do that's the only thing I hear is the EMD 645 😂 I love it.
Unit was upgraded as a GP30M by Chessie - 2000 hp with electrical and traction motor changes. These lasted longer than the non upgraded units which mostly became slugs. Oh and that is not stealth paint. It is the two tone gray and blue scheme from 1987
I remember in the mid 80,s using gp 35, as a yard dog for santa fe
definitely a classic vid here! No ditch lights whatsoever!
That was an incredible train! Awesome video.
This video makes me weep for what we have lost, with these new GEVO's infesting the railroads now. Superb video. Thanks for posting.
WOW I love that EMD whining sound u get from them :) outstanding video!!!!
Thanks brother! All those years as a trucker, the exhaust and diesel fuel smells has destroyed my lungs. So I just retired here the 1st of this month after 45 years, and over 3 million accident free miles. My FB link is in my profile, so hit me up when you get a chance.
Great video!
hear those fans singin!! great vid pullin hard love it!
Classic stuff, I'd say I wish I'd been around then, but I was... just didn't really railfan then :(
Hope you got more of this!
If Chessie did not foolishly abandon the WM Connellsville Subdivision, these trains would have had an easier trip over this mountain range, since the WM's line had lower grades than this ex B&O line. You can thank the bean counters at Chessie for this mistake.
Now thats TRUE horsepower!!
That's what we have also, now. The Amtrak trains have 2 fixed red lights on the rear upper parts of the cars. The freights have a removable device on the rear coupler. Its called and EOT (End Of Train) device, or FRED (Flashing Rear End Device). It has a flashing red marker, but also radios all the vital signs to the head end locomotive. These can also be monitored on a railroad scanner. They do nothing an the scanner but beep every few seconds. Thanks for subbing back also...
645's in their prime, oh my god, amazing capture, Jack. Must've been a hell of a time listening to those bastards...
The leader, the GP30, has a 567 pm.
Thanks Austin! Glad your enjoying them, and thanks for watching...
That's a lot of work trying to get up the grade!
Pretty damn nice. awesome catch.
Even when this was shot, the GP30 was on borrowed time. They where great looking units, and always one of my favorites.
BTW! I like your cab videos. Next time you go past Hog Pen signal at mp294. I'll set it up for yah. Maybe you can get a video. Thanks for watching, and stay safe out there..
@SimRacin14 Got LOTS more!!! I'll start editing some more old Sand Patch stuff. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294...
really great video! well done
I agree 1,000% Foamers just LOVE those Nathans especially. As for me, having a couple toots from an Erie Lackawanna Leslie S3LR in a video is always welcome
That was railroading right there. You can't get it like that anymore.
@lespaulguy32 nuttin' like that EMD sound !
when did they take out the 3rd main track from Sand Patch to Meyersdale?
Here we see the old chessie cat
Jesus what power
Great video. I love the clean freight cars. That's back before the so called artists started vandalizing trains.
@kittty2005 So instead of three 4 axle locos and a pusher moving that train, it possibly could be done with two 6 axle locos that have less combined total horsepower and no pusher. This is because even with less combined horsepower, their isn't any excess horsepower going to waste in wheel slippage. Basically with the lesser amount of axles it would be impossible to take advantage of all the available horsepower. And no, lol, I don't just like to here myself talk (or write in this instance).
gotta love the old chessie system loco's :D
Some of you are right! This was real railroading then! And look what is pulling the loads over the summit, GP30 and 40's! FOUR axle units instead of six! (of course they had help from a six axle unit bringing up the rear . . ) SD40-2 is my favorite, but the four axle EMDs got nothing but respect from this guy. Too bad many of the favorites are winding up as yard dogs or even worse, slugs. It won't be long before we see the SDs doing those jobs too. The jury is still out for me on the new BNSF's GE A1A's. The center axle is supposed to be hoisted when ever the locomotive is pulling a load (maybe in DB also?) so that the power is transferred to the axles still in contact with the rail ( +/- 1000 HP per axle?). With 44 inch wheels I guess one could do that. I guess we will see the results later, not convinced though. Some engineers have already commented that they are fairly finicky locomotives over the rough terrain areas. Anyway, I'm gonna stop rambling. GREAT POST! Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering if that could have been the venerable 396. That train used to hightail it out of Willard Ohio for Newcastle in the late evening hours about an hour ahead of the Capitol Limited.
@kittty2005 GPs do rock. But a 6 axle loco will get more tractive effort (the real pulling force) out of the same of amount horsepower as a 4 axle loco(especially at low speeds or grades). When less axles are used, the greater the possibility for wasting horsepower. With high horsepower 4 axle locos, it's impossible to convert all that horsepower into tractive effort and when it is tried you get wheel slippage. Freely spinning wheels don't do any good for pulling a train.
@strobx1
No longer seen because you will no longer see the gold and Orange cats and likely not see this kind of lash up these days.
Great video. What was that steel structure on the left side of the frame, a road bridge perhaps?
@hoolg Why is the site no long seen? Is it the TSA or CSX Gum Shoes?
I can dig it!!!
And like ive always said " bring back the 9th notch for god's sake!"
Nice shooting. I'd like to understand the science behind having a pusher at the back. Anybody know? Are they used just for grades that have a curve or any grade?
Its mainly for safety Liam. It is a marker for anything coming up behind. In the days of a caboose, or van as some call it, there are markers on there. Now that there is no more vans on trains, they have an ETO on the rear. It also has a flashing red marker. If there has to be some kind of a light, or marker on the rear of a train here in the States... Thank for watching...
CSX had a weird tendency back then to paint over the B&O, C&O, WM, SCL, L&N, and CRR reporting marks on their locos....very strange habit.
@1jackdk So at the time of this video, it was in operation?
Yah flippy!! It was a typo! and if you read a little farther, you would have saw where I called it an EOT and then (End Of Train) device with it....
i crave gp30 action high nose to low nose.
WOW !!!! GRAND TRUNK RR !!!😂😂😂
it just on when a unit on at the back if no unit flashing red light
jack... please make moar vids.... these are very nice
Taken 9 days after I was born
Did you ever get my private UA-cam message brother? I sent a couple now, and haven't got a reply from yah...
85 yera old Tony Zerilli is in jail. If you get on Fox News site. Jan 13, 2013 was when it aired.
LOL. Wink-wink. Got it. Yah, heard it on the Fox News about 2 weeks ago. Guess he told the cops where pop was burried, and I heard nothing more. Some farm north, up around Ann Arbor or something. Me, being a Union trucker from NJ, watched them build the Giant's Stadium YEARS ago. We where always told he was somewhere in the comcrete pilings in the Jersey marsh. These coal bucket drivers here in PA are crazy.Way overlaoded, and constantly run flat out to get the next load, as that's how are paid.
What happened to the rear SD50 helper? The front looks damaged!
The GP30 was my all time fav also brother! About a month ago, about a dozen Santa Fe GP30's passed the house here in PA. All where whitelined. Somebody picked them up. I don't think any class I's run them at all. I'd need to go chase them if they did. About JIMMY! Ain't there a mob boss in jail somewhere out by you, says he knows where the body is burried. Heard it on the news, and that was the last! You must know about these stupid kids killing, I mean driving these coal buckets here in PA. LOL
EMD's Rule!!!
396?
Yah Tom. it was east bound Q396.
if this train was mostly autoparts as the boxcars up front were and autoracks. this would be train Q296. used to depart from our yard in Saginaw Michigan
@traindudeacw It is the Western Maryland RWY bridge. It is a bike trail now. I have other video clips showing this bridge from the other side..
ua-cam.com/video/afN844x6_hA/v-deo.html
On would say it's running at speed for the load being pulled; not "clawing" its way up the hill.
@ussoldierrail Dude, calm down. Not everyone with a higher degree acts the way you claim. Quit making judgements about all people with advanced degrees - you should grow up and act your age.
