Outstanding blast from the past! Love that GP-30 in CSX paint. It doesn't seem that overly long ago that it was brand new, and the old units were GP-7's and GP-9's!
The only CSX U30C I ever saw was in a dead line in Waycross, Georgia. It was painted in the stealth paint scheme. I wish I had started shooting in 1987 but I didn't get into it till about 1991.
I like wide cabs but I have to admit, I miss seeing normal SD40(-2)'s at the head end of most trains. when I was 3 yrs old to about 10 (1993-New Millenium) I remember that the railroads were really going through that transition. What I really miss are Norfolk Southern's Long-hood forward years. My dad says he used to see NS SD45's coming at him long-hood forward like that. sounds pretty impressive to me! great video!
Great stuff, thanks for sharing. Another thing that you might notice before the wide cabs was that most of the power was 4 axle GP's and B units. It was rare to see an SD unit back then.
To those who complain that CSX doesn't care about history, they do. Just you don't see it out on the road. CSX has granted a number of tourist railroads the right to paint their locos in former paint jobs. They could say no as the paint jobs are still protected property. I would like to see a heritage set though. And that would have to include all the ones they picked up as part of getting Conrail.
I concur! I would like to see CSX launch a heritage series of locomotives including SCL, L&N, B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, SAL, ACL, NC&StL, WM, Monon, and NYC. Any others?
Only thing I have to say is that the NS has brought back heritage units and BNSF didn't change all the engines to the orange & black they left the ones that was red & silver alone the Green & white ones they left them alone. So why couldnt CSX do the same ???
I also remember CSX Mail 1 and 2 behind my grandpap's house in orange park, florida when he was still a dispatcher for CSX. i have seen alot of trains run through there.
A BQ23-7, basically a B23 with a bigger cab for the crew since they weren't using cabooses much anymore. Only 10 were built, all for SCL/LN, which CSX inheirited. Last time I saw one it was in Southern Indiana, and the windows were plated over and they used it as a "B" unit. (no cab controls, just a power unit)
My favorite older locomotive is a sd40-2. I use one everyday, and they are still work horses after all of these years. My favorite newer one is a cw60ac.
This is awesome, so much variety is unheard of today. Also your standing in the middle of a engine terminal, another no go today but fine today. Sigh, i wish i was older than 2 when this was shot. Id have had a field day running around and roster shooting all that power.
Excellent video. Were you an employee or a railfan and they let you on to the property to film?. So cool seeing classic Spartan Cab EMDs and pug nosed GE U-Boats with the classic 4-cycle "Chug". SCL was, generally, railfan friendly back in the late 70s and fans would come to the yards in Florida to photograph or film as long as they didn't weren't careless. Sad that those days are gone.
+To Love Sophia If you ever saw one in real life, you would hope to never see another one. The saying is " so ugly only a mother would love it". Well those stretched even that saying. They also didn't like the track down here too well either. They only stayed a few months and then were gone.
I don't think so!! Standard cabs are safer because if the engine catches on fire, you can exit faster cause there are two doors right in front of you!!!
You do realize there is a door on the front of a wide cab and only the conductor side door is a door on a standard cab. The engineer side is not a door.
Wide cabs are excellent for short trips too. all of the writing we have to do for different mandatory directives , signals, and tests they give us makes me love all wide cabs except, the SD60M vibration box. You leave your paperwork on the desk and go line a switch and the engineer moves the train about 1 car length. You get back in the cab of the locomotive your paperwork is all over the floor. Your pen dropped into something unidentifiable and nasty from about 100 mainline trips ago. Spartan cabs in switching are sometimes ok. It still can be cramped. During rainy days its just horrible.
Love it. We would always watch the trains go through Covington KY between 26th St and the river....especially at 18th Street in the late 80's through 94/95 or so. I had a friend who lived there at the time. Did we trespass ? Yes we did, but the RR personal did not seem to mind and we got to know a few people back then....especially at KC Tower.
I kinda like the look of yesteryear. The Uboats, gps, Sd, as well as the designs and sounds. It really gave trains a personality that the public loved. Each engine had its own character which spoked directly to the kid at heart. I kinda missed them greatly. I stand track side not to see the usual, but the unusual. Like today, I caught unexpected coal drag that comes once a month on different RR. Im looking forward to seening the circuse train. Great Video.
Great material Dean! It sure was great, you never knew what would show up next! I couldn't believe my eyes seeing SCL, C&O and RF&P paint, but then one day near the holidays I saw an L&N logo! In the 1990s, no less!
Lot of old classic power there. I remember all of those paint schemes too. I work with KCS and we still have EMD standard cabs in service, all of our long haul locomotives are modern wide cab EMD or GE units
Back in 94 when I was in the Navy I had a lot of fun railfanning CSX in Jacksonville, and man, they had all kinds of units in all kinds of paint schemes, made for fun days to railfan!
@CN413Fox That's a B30-7. Like you said CN413Fox, those are the best days of CSX because of the oddball CSX locomotives, most locomotives being standard cabs, and because of the classic GE Dash 7's and U boats. Long live the 90's!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic!!! I remember those days. Now the ubiquitous SD40-2 is almost a rarity. Plus you could go right into the terminals...such innocent times. Great camerawork--composition scene after scene is perfect--and excellent editing. Really enjoyable and will watch it again--it's in my trains playlist. Thanks for posting.
I was just thinking that not long ago, 10 years ago I thought the sd40-2 was just an everyday thing, took it for granted, now I rarely see them in Milwaukee.
some of these were sent out, re-built, and then sold to short lines or to over-seas rail lines. some of these still live on; you can now see them world-wide ...!
I caught a SD50 still lettered for Seaboard System with both the nose and end of long hood painted yellow with CSX on it around early 2004 or 2005. A week later I saw the same unit patched out and lettered for HCLX.
+Shane Smith BQ23-7, (the 'Q' stood for "crew Quarters"). Mechanically identical to a regular B23-7, but equipped with an enlarged operating cab for accommodating the train crew, thus making a case for eliminating the caboose from the rear of freight trains.
I'm really disapointed that I never got the chance to see any of these old units in person, but I managed to see Conrail C40-8s in person in 1992 leading stack train!! Great Footage, 5 Stars!!!
This is why i like the line near my house Its a CSX Branch lline off of Brunswick and theres no wide cabs due to several wooden trestles. I saw a GP39 (1 out of 5) this week!
Nice! Miss those days, GP30's weren't all slugs, U-Boats chugging around, Chessie everywhere and you were allowed to dismount moving equipment. Like the ex-RDG unit too!
6845 and 4233 are gone, but 4316 and 4309 are still around in Florida. Maybe the 4233 is a slug? Checked the 3108, gone, however 2576 still here........Interesting engine 5526 still marked C&O here or not, cannot tell..........wow, 4316 ex-MKT! Neat! Incredible video, love every minute. I lived this from 1980 to 1990 and model same today.
The Green jeeps were built for the Reading RR. They went to the Delaware & Hudson then Guilford Trans (the grey engine with orange stripe). CSX bought them in '91. Most if not all are working in FL now.
The "sleeping kitten" was such an iconic logo. They never should have done away with it. CSX should have just used it for their logo. In any case at 3:57 the loco with the orange stripe is looks like a Guilford Transportation unit (not part of csx) perhaps on pooled power.
Great video! Was that Cumberland engine shop?! Its the early CSX I remember! Though its just to bad I never saw a Chessie U33B But did see 3416 on the susieQ pinch hitting for one of there GP18s back in the 90s. Its amazing even after 4 owners to still see it in Reading paint!
@cheechchongfan97 I think thats a U boat wide cab. The design was originally intended to replace the need for a caboose when it was pushing, and had room for 5 crew members in the cab.
All I can say is bring your earplugs when riding in those standard cabs, they are loud. Wide cabs are nice just for the fact that they are quieter and you don't have to listen to that air purge every time move the auto/ind. or even the bell. I like the GP/SD for the nostalgic factor and when I get a 40 Snoot, I'm happy on the inside.
The unit that you see at 4:22 is a BQ23-7,only 10 of these were ever built.THe cabs were constructed so that the whole crew would ride up front and they would not be using cabooses. The units at 5:21 and 7:15 are GP-35 slugs.Prime movers removed ,but traction motors retained from the extra traction when needed.
Where was this video taken at? I do not see any landmarks I am famalier unless this is Atlanta GA. What a great collection of now, rare diesels:UBoats (Man hole covers), GP30s and others.......love this and thank you for posting.
I miss the 90s, best decade for railroading.
So much better than now. Lots of variety back then. Thanks for uploading this one.
Love the old U boats and EMD's. Those were classic engines and yes, easier to work on and keep running. Thanks for the video.
I have a ho scale u boat
Seeing the blue and gray csx locomotive takes me back to my youth. You can't beat the old EMDs I always liked the GP40-2s.
I miss those days. I was only 10 years old at the time, but those young times of being a railfan are the most rememberable ones I have.
Outstanding blast from the past!
Love that GP-30 in CSX paint. It doesn't seem that overly long ago that it was brand new, and the old units were GP-7's and GP-9's!
The last GP30 was built in 1963, which is nearly 60 years ago.
Long Live Chessie. I'd take these days over modern day any day. Wish I grew up back then. I love them B30-7 units.
Actually there is one wide cab! a GE BQ23-7 ! A pre curser to the wide cab that was built by the Family Lines to acomodate a 5 man crew!
The only CSX U30C I ever saw was in a dead line in Waycross, Georgia. It was painted in the stealth paint scheme. I wish I had started shooting in 1987 but I didn't get into it till about 1991.
Super sad seeing all those locos that could still be used unless they were in very low grade condition
I like wide cabs but I have to admit, I miss seeing normal SD40(-2)'s at the head end of most trains. when I was 3 yrs old to about 10 (1993-New Millenium) I remember that the railroads were really going through that transition. D Smith Chessie?
RF&P
Chessie most of all!
Only thing I have to say is that the NS has brought back heritage units and BNSF didn't change all the engines to the orange & black they left the ones that was red & silver alone the Green & white ones they left them alone. So why couldnt CSX do the same ???
I used to see those original B&O geeps in Garrett a lot.
I also remember CSX Mail 1 and 2 behind my grandpap's house in orange park, florida when he was still a dispatcher for CSX. i have seen alot of trains run through there.

Beautiful video,oh how i miss those days!! such variety.
CSX needs to make "Throwback" units
Beautiful video, thank you for the memories!
Thanks for the ride back into railroad history. Enjoyed it!
that's cool. never saw a BQ23-7 before
+To Love Sophia If you ever saw one in real life, you would hope to never see another one. The saying is " so ugly only a mother would love it". Well those stretched even that saying. They also didn't like the track down here too well either. They only stayed a few months and then were gone.
Wide cabs are much more comfortable for distance though. I think it's good to have them on the mainline and standard cabs switching.
And safer.
I don't think so!! Standard cabs are safer because if the engine catches on fire, you can exit faster cause there are two doors right in front of you!!!
You do realize there is a door on the front of a wide cab and only the conductor side door is a door on a standard cab. The engineer side is not a door.
Union Pacific Fan I never understood what they did that for..
Wide cabs are excellent for short trips too. all of the writing we have to do for different mandatory directives , signals, and tests they give us makes me love all wide cabs except, the SD60M vibration box. Every so often I see locomotives like these in switching and local freight operations. Great video.
Fantastic Video! Great filming, and great Units of the past and their fallen flags! Thanks.
That was a great walk down memory lane. Saw CSXT 4316 not long ago... In YN3 pain, of course. Excellent compilation. Five stars, Fav'd & Shared.
i may have been three at the time this was filmed but i love when you show me what i was too young to appriciate
Great video! I love seeing old footage like this.
Wow cool video and they do look very different and look at all those classics.
Very cool video
Wide cabs sucks now
I kinda like the look of yesteryear. The Uboats, gps, Sd, as well as the designs and sounds. It really gave trains a personality that the public loved. Chris Martin I see SD40 - 2s on a nearly weekly basis on the CSX line where I live
I was just thinking that not long ago, 10 years ago I thought the sd40-2 was just an everyday thing, took it for granted, now I rarely see them in Milwaukee.
Polish Sausage out where I live in Southeastern Minnesota UP SD40-2's and GP38-2's are just as common as all the modern GE/EMD equipment
I miss early CSX. I was born in 1991 and witnessed few of these early locomoitves in the early 90's, -_-
not a fan of "WIDE CAB" s..love this vidio. thanks
some of these were sent out, re-built, and then sold to short lines or to over-seas rail lines. some of these still live on; you can now see them world-wide ...!
Awesome video. 5***** and favorite.
hey hello from houston great videos
Excellent find of those BQ23-7's!!
I caught a SD50 still lettered for Seaboard System with both the nose and end of long hood painted yellow with CSX on it around early 2004 or 2005. A week later I saw the same unit patched out and lettered for HCLX.

+Gerald Mcginley And about the ugliest loco to ever turn on the wye here.
gravelydon shut up they looked cool
Wow... that's a great look back.
I'm really disapointed that I never got the chance to see any of these old units in person, but I managed to see Conrail C40-8s in person in 1992 leading stack train!! Great Footage, 5 Stars!!!
It's all great stuff!!!
it's an experimental engine that the family lines did, it's a BQ23-7
This is why i like the line near my house Its a CSX Branch lline off of Brunswick and theres no wide cabs due to several wooden trestles. I saw a GP39 (1 out of 5) this week!
that was quite a graceful dismount at 3:21, he made it look much easier than it really is
I have a model of the grey and blue csx before they made wide cabs, to be honest i think it looks better that wide cabs
I remember these times well. All the old paint schemes!
Nice! Miss those days, GP30's weren't all slugs, U-Boats chugging around, Chessie everywhere and you were allowed to dismount moving equipment. Like the ex-RDG unit too!
It's amazing how far locomotives (and paint schemes) have come in almost 20 years.
Sweet Video!
Great video!!! AWESOME!!
0:50 former Guilford GP39-2 which was a former Delaware & Hudson GP39-2
The Guiliford GP39-2s CSX got were not former D&H. They were former Reading RR units. The one in green is still in original paint
@@CRPULSE300
They were from the Reading originally, but Conrail gave them to the D&H.
that is some amazing footage!!!
6845 and 4233 are gone, but 4316 and 4309 are still around in Florida. Maybe the 4233 is a slug? Wish I had been photographing/filming trains back then. So much more interesting then the wide cabs.
Chessie, L&N, B&O, C&O.
I miss those days
Wow, there were ALOT of units in old road names still around.

1:37 Sounds like the Graham White 373 E-Bell in mechanical form.
Nice Family Lines U-Boat with the EMD trucks
Anyone know what model of locomotive is that at 5:58?. I never seen one like that here in the US.
Man, this vid is AWESOME!!! I LOOOVE Standard cab engines.
the csx engine 4233 looks so cool
Great video! Was that Cumberland engine shop?! Its the early CSX I remember! Though its just to bad I never saw a Chessie U33B
But did see 3416 on the susieQ pinch hitting for one of there GP18s back in the 90s. Its amazing even after 4 owners to still see it in Reading paint!
this was the shop at Grand Rapids Michigan that is now closed.
@cheechchongfan97 I think thats a U boat wide cab. The design was originally intended to replace the need for a caboose when it was pushing, and had room for 5 crew members in the cab.
I remember getting out or work around 3:30pm and driving through the yard just to see what mish-mash of power they had setting around.
Cool to see these old fallen flag units 🚂
@ 1:40 those the kind of bells i love too hear
Damn trucks and highways!
Back when railroads were unique
Okay, at 5:58, what in the world kind of engine is 3005? I've never seen an engine like that! It's so cool!
Lorna D an ugly one.
Polish Sausage I think they look cool
The unit that you see at 4:22 is a BQ23-7,only 10 of these were ever built.THe cabs were constructed so that the whole crew would ride up front and they would not be using cabooses. The units at 5:21 and 7:15 are GP-35 slugs.Prime movers removed ,but traction motors retained from the extra traction when needed.
Including the BQ23-7 "Crew quarters cab" - I wonder how many they had in the cab back then!?
2 or 3 on our branch. And the crew hated that loco. It soon was replaced with two Geeps. 2 in the lead cab and one back in the second.
Where was this video taken at? I do not see any landmarks I am famalier unless this is Atlanta GA. What a great collection of now, rare diesels:UBoats (Man hole covers), GP30s and others.......love this and thank you for posting.
Anybody know what kind of loco that is at 4:22 Seaboard Coast Line 3005?
IN JUNE OF 1992 CSX 4316 HELPED A TRAIN WITH BROKEN AMTRAK LOCOMOTIVES! BE SURE TO WATCH IT!
Ha that modern SD60 at 9:03 must feel so out of place! Outstanding power, love the GP30 and the BQ23-7. 5*.
Can I use this. Ideo?
They were good because they still had Chessie System units.
is that green with yellow stripes unit a Katy unit? and at 4:26, what style unit is the Seaboard system unit?
It's a Reading
Nice
What kind of engine was that on 4:26?
What type of engine is that at 5:58? I've never seen one quite like it before
What type of locomotive is at 6:00? It looks different.
I'm 19 and prefer standard cabs and older EMD and GE power! Nice video
Thumbs up 4 the Seaboard System geep!
There were plenty of widecabs in use by May of 1992. For example, the SD60M was in production as early as 1989.
Where was this shot?
Ah good to see my 8707 before the days of YN2!!!!
