Another home run for Samyang. And some beautiful images, Dustin. That horizontal branch at 13:16 is freakishly 3-dimensional, it just seems to be floating in air on my monitor.
Samyang definitely need to bring us a 135 AF with this and the 85's image quality.....

Concur completely with your evaluation. It has that special quality - the kind of defocused textures counterpointed to the sharpness & very nice colors. Because of its form factor its easy to take along & I have deliberately been taking it along with the sony 90mm macro to get a compositional complementation. I also think that this is the form factor that does justice to the sony lightweight bodies. Gives that flexibility

👍 This is the kind of video that made me subscribe. I like these deep dives on a very subjective aspects of lens performance. The "it" or "wow" factor when a lens delivers an image that the naked eye can't, is something we all are looking for, but will not all agree on.

Thanks for the review. Finally Sony 35 F1.8 came out and eventually Samyang 45 F1.8 became quite unique option, I think. Good AF, good IQ, lightweight with inexpensive price package would be quite appealing for most people. Samyang release their AF lenses vigorously. I hope Samyang would make the AF version of their best MF lens, 135mm F2 for next time.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Samyang now have 14, 24, 35 2.8, 35 1.4, 45, 50, 85mm AF primes for FE mount. Definitely there is a room for 18-21mm. Zeiss Loxia 21mm and Batis 18mm is too pricey, but there is quite strong contenders; Viltrox 20mm and Tokina 20mm. I'm really into Samyang's next move.

The pixel peaking here is interesting academically, but in the “real world”, does it make a big difference?
What is clear is the Samyang folks have made a great lens for our hard-earned bucks. Thanks for talking about how the lens renders stuff. There’s a reason there’s a big legacy lens use among A7 users. “Perfect” lenses may not always give as beautiful image as a slightly “flawed” lens.

Whilst I was raised on manual focus cameras, and still, find my Leica M6 manual camera easy to focus, thanks to the rangefinder system of focussing, frankly autofocusing is, most of the time, just so much faster. This is especially relevant to me when taking shots of my grandchildren and adults averse to any taking of images other than by use of a mobile phone.
So Samyang, you will make a fortune if you add autofocus to your excellent IQ lens.
