I was a space geek nine year old back in 1965 and I was absolutely heartbroken when I saw the first aerial, grainy, black and white pictures of the Martian surface in our local newspaper revealing very Moon-like craters and features. All my dreams of Martian fantasies rife with ancient cities and plants and fauna and canals were quashed immediately. I was quasi depressed until a decade later when back in July 20, 1976 Viking 1 landed on the Martian surface and almost immediately my dreams returned when I saw for the first time, images of Mars with red sand and rocks and distant hills with very few craters and a very Earthlike, Arizona desert-like landscape with a pink sky. I have never lost hope for Mars and I never will. It is my first celestial body love. Thanks to the likes of Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Bradbury et, al, and their visions of Mars in their stories. Finding past or hopefully present signs of life on "Barsoom" will always remain alive.

It's incredible how our perceptions and hopes for celestial bodies evolve over time, influenced by both scientific discoveries and the imaginative worlds crafted by authors like Asimov, Clarke, Burroughs, and Bradbury. Your enduring love for Mars despite the initial disappointment reflects a resilient spirit and an unwavering sense of wonder. Here's to the ongoing exploration of "Barsoom" and the endless possibilities it holds.
