Comparing Sprockets - 36 Tooth VS 48 Tooth

  • Managing to get that STOOPID hub adapter from BikeBerry to work, I'm able to compare the difference between riding with a 36 and 48 tooth sprocket.
I found the 36 tooth to have a much smoother power delivery. The ratio means the engine never quite runs out of puff, which means you can crack on at speeds where the engine tops out on the standard 44 tooth, without the crazy vibrations of high engine speeds.
The 48 tooth sprocket was better suited for the hilly areas I ride in. The extra torque really brings the bike alive and the quicker acceleration is super addictive. I didn't find I lost much in the top speed compared to the 44 tooth, but the higher torque makes it easier to cruise at speeds closer to top.
HOWEVER! The rubbish quality of BikeBerry's BBR Tuning Nexus Hub Adapter caused problems still, causing me to come to a screeching halt in the middle of the forest when it spat the bolts out of the sprocket at about 45 km/h!
In my next video, I'll make my repairs and savagely put the Mk4 bike through its paces on the 48 tooth sprocket, the ratio which is by far my favourite!

I’d never put an aluminum sprocket on my bike

The only time I've had good luck with hub adapters is on coaster brake hubs. What's worked really well for me is mounting the sprocket onto a disc brake hub. I made some studs by cutting down some bolts, threaded them into the hub with red loctite, and just slipped the sprocket on and held on with nuts. It's held up perfectly even with bump starting a high compression engine.

Incidentally, this hub adapter ended up destroying this wheel, snapping 6 spokes. There's a lot of hate for the rag joints, but I've never had one snap a single spoke

You might have already fixed it but one of your master link clip is on backwards. when you have the 48t sprocket on it. At 7:31 in the video. when you show how you put two master links.

Oh yeah this is long since changed. This frame wound up with a 4 stroke on it in the end

I live in a very hilly area, you never can tell on camera. The 36 did alright but I also preferred the 56 tooth for later builds

You might want to try a 9t drive sprocket up front for more torque.

Did you use locktite on the bolts?

No, stupid me forgot the loctite first time around. And this is what happens when you forget!

Might want to drill it out and put bolts all the way thru and nuts on backside helps a lot man
