  • Introduction to Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland; or the Transformation, an American Tale (1798). I provide a brief overview of the Father of the American Novel in relation to 18th-century British and American novelists like Samuel Richardson (Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded), Daniel Defoe, William Hill Brown, and Susanna Rowson.

Thank you for posting these videos on CBB! I have been drafting an honors project on him this past semester, and I was overjoyed when I saw some new videos posted regarding him.
Very insightful - the more I think I know about Brown, the more I realize there is to both the man and his works. Thank you again!

I have but one question. Do you hold an examination at the end of semester? And I found this video precisely shaped to benefit my adventure through Wieland, that begins right now. Also, is it an advertisement, like to sell a product, or is it an ad-vedus-ment, as you say? What's the difference? Good job, thx byebye.

What no William Godwin? Can we talk of Wieland without mentioning “Caleb Williams”?

The first native born american to make money by writing. So I guess the indiginous peoples we colonized and slaughtered didn't have currency or writing. Obviously. 🙄

They had oral stories no doubt BUT they didn't have books and literature as we knew and know it, and they used the trade of goods instead of money.
