This is awesome! I'm studying Wieland for a Gothic Lit class and I was perplexed because I had never heard of it before and there seems to be little coverage of it online. This is a really great analysis and I'm heartened to see that there's some love online for these more obscure novel studies.

Great discussion! I wrote my senior thesis on Wieland - I found the use of ventriloquism so disturbing and interesting, especially given the gothic themes. Interesting points about Clara. Also wasn't aware of the real life analogues... Thanks for the reminder that I need to reread this one!
Thanks! How interesting that you chose Wieland as a senior thesis. It's certainly a strange book that gives the reader a lot to think about: spontaneous human combustion, ventriloquism, religious delusion, mass murder, etc. It's a trip!
