- Homemade vanilla extract is easy to make. Our homemade vanilla extract bursts with vanilla flavor. Homemade vanilla extract is quick, simple, and easily made in about ten minutes. After this is made, it takes about two months for it to mature. Our recipe is much faster than vodka based extract and those using only a few beans.
We use this extract for all of our baking including cakes, cookies, and pies. It makes your sweet recipes high quality and more flavorful. It is only a ten minute process to cut the beans and put in the alcohol. If you shake the homemade vanilla extract each day, be it will ready to use in less than two months.
The jar in the video cost about $23 which is very cost competitive when compared to the cost of high quality vanilla. Our homemade vanilla extract is high quality and provides a smooth taste with much more flavor than the store bought processed varieties. The store bought varieties can cost up to $40.
The best part of baking from scratch is using high quality ingredients to make that perfect cake. I make my vanilla cake from scratch using this homemade vanilla extract. It just taste better than store bought.

Homemade vanilla extract is simple, tasty, and has excellent flavor.
The longer it sits, the better it is.
I made two quarts of this, but one with spiced rum, and one with vodka. Let sit for over a year.
But a pressure cooker will get you the same results in an hour.
Nice job❤😊
Thanks!
Spiced rum works really well too . Also I slice the beans vertically thru one layer as well.
That sounds awesome! Definitely gonna be using that when I make it. I’m gonna make it differently though by putting it in a jar with ethanol and placing it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. And then I’m gonna heat it up in the jar after the ultrasonic bath. Ultrasonic vibrations create oxygen bubbles that make those cells lyse and explode. So I hypothesize it would take as little as a day instead of 2-3 months. But I’m 100% gonna be using rum now. That sounds delicious. Great idea😄
I finally made this and it’s now ready to use. Can’t wait to try it! Thank you, sir, and God bless you!
Thanks!!! Enjoy!! God bless !

How did it turn out?
@@KristaJ73 it turned out really good!
thanks for sharing
I use Madagasgar grade b & Jack Daniel's. I'm happy. Thanks for your video:)
Awesome! Thanks!
🎉❤😊
How do you use it when a recipe calls for a teaspoon of vanilla extra? Do you just open up the jar and get the liquid or is there another step that needs to be taken after a few months?
Hi. I just open it and get a teaspoon. I don’t shake the jar first. I still shake the jar every now and then but not before I get a teaspoon.
Also noted from other people who do this, they say they've been extracting from the same beans for twenty years using the vodka.
Hi. I’ve made it with vodka and moonshine. They take forever. A few years ago, I had some bourbon that was expensive but I just didn’t like it. I didn’t want to throw it out so I used it for my next batch of extract and wow! I know folks say that you can reuse the beans but I like to get new ones each time. There more flavor and less waiting.
Absolutely excellent!!! I wish to thank you for your post...
Thanks!
I bet after it has sit for longer you could remove the pods and pull out the beans paste. That would be awesome in a creme brûlée. Going to be trying this out for sure.
That sounds awesome!!! I'm going to try that as well.
When it’s finished, do you leave the beans in? Is there a use for used beans?
Hi. I leave then in the extract. Some folks have commented that they reuse them in another batch but I alway use fresh beans.
@@useful.knowledge .thanks. I thought I read someone say one time to use them for something else....not another batch. Maybe they dehydrated them for a car deodorizer. Lol. I don’t know
Pour off about half, then refill the jar. That should last a bit, and your second batch finishes faster.
@@CharlesSmith-io9fp . Thanks
Can you make a video on how to make maple syrup?
When we are done making the first vanilla extract would we be able to reuse the same vanilla beans to make more? If so how many more times could we repeat the process.
Hi. I have read where folks do reuse the vanilla. I understand that it takes longer for the extract to get ready for use on the second time around.
@@useful.knowledge thank you
I love bourbon flavor!
I was watching your canning tomatoe video.never seen them canned without water bath or pressure cooker.do they still have the same shelf life?
Hi. This is the open kettle method that was once the recommended method before water bath became recommended. They last as long as water bath but I always say 12-18 months.
I use Ararat Armenian bourbon. So delicious.
Great video will have to give this a try 👍
Thanks!
Thanks Jamie for the video. Will have to give this a try
Thanks!
Wonderful video.
Thanks!
Thank you for this video! I plan to try it! You sure named your channel the right name. Useful Knowledge! :) God bless you!
Thanks and God Bless you also!
I see you used all of your vanilla in one jar, most I see is ones that split the vanilla and use two per jar. What is the difference.
Hi. It makes the vanilla extract ready in about a month versus 6-12 months with two in a jar.
Looks great. Ty for sharing your video and information with us ALL.
Thanks!
You didn't OPEN the jar so we can see what it looks like when it's ready. What did you do with the bean skins?
Send me an email to useful.knowledge.tv@gmail.com and I’ll send you a pic of the exact jar in the video. I haven’t even opened it yet but will be in the next few weeks because my other jar is about empty. To answer your question, I just leave the beans in the jar.
Do you strain mix with vanilla beans after the processing time is over?
Hi. I’ve actually never thought about that. I usually just leave them in the jar but I like your idea! I think that I will strain them. Thanks!!
Useful knowledgeable alright! 😉 can I ask, do you have to sterilise the jars? x Thanks!
Hi. I wash them with dish washing soap or in the dishwasher but I don’t heat them up to sterilize them. I figure the alcohol will kill any contamination.
Useful Knowledge that’s what I figured but I thought I’d double check! X
Do you reuse the beans in another jar or just add liquor back into the jar or don’t reuse the beans
Hi. It takes me about 6 months to use up an 8oz jar so I always make a new jar. I think you could probably add some bourbon back in once it got about halfway used. I have heard of some folks reusing the beans but I think they would be weakened in flavor.
Is it ok to use Scotch?
Hi. Scotch would work!
@@useful.knowledge Thank you
Try captain Morgan’s spiced rum.
Can you still smell the bourbon after 2 months?
In May 2022 I made a Jim Beam/Madagascar bean blend
(with 750ml/3oz bean ratio)
and it still smells VERY strongly like bourbon 6 months later... I mean it is STILL very boosy smelling!
It's so confusing for a new extracter with all the approaches out there. :\
Hi. Mine smells like vanilla extract at two months. I don’t have that whiskey/bourbon smell at that point. Did you by chance shake them up every few days?
I just got some VBK Grade A Madagascar’s to try out this company. And to be honest, they were flat, nearly dry and short. Very disappointed. I sent them a photo and they are sending me a new pack. You need 1 oz beans (don’t go by the # of beans but weight) per 8 oz 70 proof minimum liquor (no matter what type) for best extraction. The best, consistently good beans I’ve purchased on Amazon are by Native Vanilla. Their Tahitian beans are great!
You’re absolutely right about the proof info and how to measure exact..a lot of videos forget those tips. I also buy from Native Vanilla.
@@owl4 Absolutely!
Dude! Imagine you left it to age 2 years! This one lady let's hers age 18 months minimum before she touches it ever: and she prefers to let it sit 2 years. hers is at LEAST triple strength..but , and 2&1/2 beans and a pint size jar.
🤔🤔🤔
im fascinated by your recipe because you using 10 vanilla beans🤔🤔🤔 wonder what that would be like
Good point! I may have to make a jar with the 10 beans and let it sit. I’m always up for trying anything like that.
You wouldn’t need to use as much for sure. Im going to try it!
Please note that your vanilla beans come from Indonesia, not Tahiti.
Hi. I checked into this because I’ve only purchased Tahitian vanilla for about the past two years. Apparently “Tahitian” vanilla beans are now grown in other places around the world.
@@useful.knowledge But, Jamie, it says Indonesia right on the package you're showing us. How can your beans be from Tahiti? I'm surprised no one else commented on this.
I know. I thought Amazon was false advertising the vanilla. Apparently the Tahitian is basically a variety not necessarily where it’s grown. It’s interesting reading.
@@useful.knowledge I understand. That makes sense and thank you for letting me know.
@@nadinemclean1671 They grow Tahitian Beans in New Guinea also. I had to ask a vendor about that. Two different beans grown in the same place.
Costco often has vanilla at a decent price
👍
You only need is 2 1/2 beans per 8 0z. jar
2.5 beans per jar will work but it’s going to take many months longer to reach the flavor profile needed for baking/cooking.
