POV converting 2.5L Duratec for NC Miata use

- This is a POV video taken while I prepared a customers Ford Fusion 2.5L Duratec motor for use in their NC Miata. The Duratec motor is a less-than-intuitive motor to assemble and time so I figured it would be easier to follow the process and explanations with demonstration.
We offer kits for you to complete your own motor swap on our website and much more!

This is the documentation I have written regarding the process of assembling and timing the Duratec motors: docs.google.co...

Any information from this video is strictly for demonstrational purposes. I accept no responsibility for failures and problems that others may encounter while attempting to copy what has been done in this video. Always torque your bolts to factory specs and use brand new parts everywhere possible.
This was mesmerizing to watch. Good work man
You sir are a saint.
That's a whole ass video
Since you removed the timing gear before tightening the crankshaft bolt to 90 degrees, couldn't it lead to the pulley slipping timing?
It cannot. We always check our timing after tightening sequence as well and they never slip. The friction washers do their job at the initial torque value.
When you said that the slots in the back of the camshafts are slightly off center, does that mean that the tool will only fit one way? Or, can the tool be installed 180 degrees off?
I just figured it out. The tool does only fit one way. With the camshaft timing tool in place, the #1 cylinder is in the compression stroke. In other words, the intake and exhaust lobes on cyl1 are pointing up and in. Here's a crude drawing ] / \ [ Imagine the angles in the drawing to be the camshaft lobes on the first cylinder with the cam timing tool in place.
29:30 you note that you are reassembling with friction washers. Can you help me understand why they are needed on the reinstall? thank you
The same reason they’re necessary when putting them on the crankshaft - we don’t want them to spin free under heavy torque loading when driving.
Any idea why the VVT solenoid holder has a slot for a second one?
I'm willing to bet either the design was intended to be used for dual-VVT in the future or it was a crossover part to another model with dual VVT.
Thank you so much. You are amazing. How much for 1 more
wow very nice video! do you have link to the tappet calculator? yours look a lot cleaner than one i found in 2.5 fb group
Drop me an email and I’ll send it over. Email address in video info.
43:15 the water pump spins when you are installing the pulley. I thought the water belt was hooked up to the crank shat via chain, which at this point is locked in place. How was the water pump pulley able to spin without rotating the crank?
The oil pump is chain driven. The water pump is belt driven. At no point do I hook a chain to that pulley, the front chain cover goes on before I install that pulley, and furthermore the pulley is a flat surface for belt drive.
@@ArmandHindrichs Ah that makes sense. I mixed up the water pump and oil pump. I realized this later that night. Thank you
Did you use the 2.0 or 2.5 oil pick up tube?
2.0
Hey I plan to do this swap because my 2006 NC just developed rod knock. I've sourced a 2019 2.5 fusion engine. Would anything change with the more modern engine in comparison to the guides or parts bought?
Did you ever find the answer to this?
Lmao, I just finished up a 2.5 swap a few months ago. My sourced 2019 motor didn't have any issues other than the standard grinding needed for belt clearance.
@@MistaWikked also don't buy anything from dynotronics
@@mintealh I've been hearing that a lot recently lol
I had heard someone say that you don't need the diamond washers on the 2018 plus but ordered them just in case. Haven't found a donor motor yet but I've been starting on parts for the swap ahead of time.
@@MistaWikked yep, don't need the washers on the new motors, friction surfaces already have teething milled in. Just depends on year sourced. Good luck with swap!
How can you determine what vehicle the 2.5 Duratec came out of? Is there a full VIN number on the engine some where?
Sometimes but not always. Most scrap companies will have the engines tagged with the info.
Did you ever tighten the timing tensioner bolts!?!?!😅
This video has been up for almost 2 years and you're the first person to catch that! I may have done it in one of the cuts. I had a few segments I had to edit out due to stepping away to do something else so it's possible. The car this motor is in has been raced almost a hundred times since I built it so I'm pretty sure we'd know by now. :D
Where did you get the harmonic pulley holding tool??

What are the torque specs or values for the oil pan bolts please ??
15ftlb
im gonna be seasick....
Which injectors did you use for the new 2.5?
The standard white-strip ones that come with it.
I wish your shop was near me
Doesn't stop people from shipping their cars to us. :)
How much?
$1 million
I just did my 2.5 swaps with the cam stage 2 by Esslinger. I wish I had seen your video before 😩 I feel like my engine is blowing soon 😂.
If I may ask, please, I have a lifter rattle noise 🥹 is it okay to drive it, or is it such a severe issue that needs to be fixed asap?
Absolutely do not drive it. Do not run it. It's not lifter noise since these do not have lifters.
@@ArmandHindrichs many thanks for your response, what could be? It’s like small tickle sounds
You without a doubt convinced me that these guys doing this in their driveway are heading for trouble. It’s always what you don’t known that screws you .
Not really, there's plenty of community support for people to have an idea/get the parts they need ahead of time/follow along the many posted instructions and tips.
If you're go to speed it up don't wear the camera on your head ...this was unwatchable
UA-cam has a little gear icon in the bottom right of the play window where you can select playback speed. I speed my videos up so they aren't ridiculously long uploads. No complaints until yours.
