1979, I bought a brand new Superglide with the new 80-CI engine. No oil cooler, after about an hour of riding, the rear cylinder would get so hot it would start to predetonate. The rear pipe would start popping flames with a loud POW POW POW. I would have to pull over on the side of whatever road, shut the engine off and let the air cooled engine cool. If you have it installed at a Harley dealership they can do it correctly and then no worries. I do know from watching Doc, the computer on the bike looks at everything and if it sees something it doesn't like, it causes problems.
Hello Doc. Thanks for the info. I was curious if adding an oil cooler messes with the PSI rating of the oil system itself on the motorcycle? I have a 16 Heritage with true duals and a big air breather. The pipes are wrapped. I recently added a fan assisted cooler with thermostat. I rode yesterday and it was a pretty cool day. The bike temp got up to 273 in stop and go traffic but was running around 250 otherwise. I’m worried about the summertime. Is there anything else I can do to cool it down?
You have checked all the right boxes. Keep the oil clean as much as possible. Make sure your “tune” is correct. Too lean will raise the temperature. And keep moving, this is an air cooled motor👍…Doc
I have a 05 FXSTDI, live in Southern CA Hermosa Beach, in the summer I can't get high enough on my toes to get away from my oil tank. Going to put an ultra Cool w/a fan on my bike. I'll take 20⁰ temp reduction, smaller blister😬 my bike now has 10k miles on it, so I do ride a bit.
One of the thing you didn't mention is that oil temperature at crank bearing and rod bearing while driving it is lot hotter, if you take stock bike and you put cam and pistons and ride like sport bike, yes you should use oil cooler.
My 2017 Freewheeler did not come with fan. Heating at rear of back cylinder head can be diminished by removing that cat that adds major back pressure in a short distance to back cylinder. Also using the EITMS ? to kick out fuel heating in back cylinder in summer traffic is a must imo.
Doc : thanks for having such clear , concise , and informative videos for us ! I’ve owned quite a few H-D’s since the 70’s , and remember back in the day , the bikers added oil coolers like the Jagg , which as you know mounted to either side of the frame’s down tube . This allowed “ clean “ air to run past it and STILL allowed said clean air to hit the V- twins forward cylinder . I traded my 83’ beloved FXWG Wide Glide in for a brand new FXLR Low Rider , and was SO DISAPPOINTED that Willie G and da boys installed the oil cooler smack dab in front of the engine’s front jug ! Now in the Texas heat , the air is preheating the air to the forward cylinder , and sending a blast furnace of scalding air to the rear cylinder … YOUR opinion please , sir ?
My opinion is strong. Every one is under the misunderstanding that this large "oil cooler" in front of the front cylinder is for the motor. It is not! It is only to cool the front and rear exhaust valves. With the size of the M8 motor the Motor it self need a 10 row with fan oil cooler besides the center oil cooler. Like the old days. Yes I would rather have two oil coolers on each side of the frame tubes and let the front cylinder receive fresh air. I am stepping down from my box now....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thanks for that most detailed response ! I was “ happy “ to see them install this oil cooler ; I was just shaking my head and asking myself - “ WHAT were their engineers THINKING ? “
Doc, Will an oil cooler help for my bike? I have a stage 4 setup and it runs hotter than normal with the cams, and heads . But in traffic I dont think this would help? at lights and such.
Awesome insights Doc ! I’m ( still ) highly disappointed that HD didn’t follow Jagg’s engineering by having the location of said oil cooler to either side of the down tubes of the front of the frame to allow “ clean air “ for the oil cooler AND clean air to hit the front of the front cylinder ! ( instead of placing the new HD cooler directly in front of the engine ) This was a poor choice on the Motor Company’s part ; it would have been NO MORE expensive to have chosen this better location. , IMHO . Peace ☮️
My 2019 softail slim came with an oil cooler but without an electric fan. Would it be possible to have an oil cooler with an electric fan installed by the dealership?
I'm going to have to slightly disagree with the reason for HD putting the fan cooler on the Trike models; rather than because they are moving slower, more stop and go or that they are in traffic more often, I believe its because of the higher 114 displacement, more engine load due to extra weight and rear running gear, and that they typically have or get Lower fairings which tend to block some free flowing air.. I live in the ozarks area, have a 107 Street Glide, and added Lower Fairings and I'm considering adding a fan to the OEM cooler and maybe I will be able to keep the Rear cylinder auto Shut-off feature disable..
How about using steel braided lines n not worrying about stones flying . I had one on a 85 fxr. Can I get one for an 09 heritage softail? Would you know approximate cost of parts?
Steel braid covered oil hoses may well help guard against foreign object damage, however the heat exchanger body itself remains at risk of puncture damage from foreign objects unless protected by a wire mesh screen. Thanks, Ralph K in St Louis, MO
Old timer told me on non thermostat controlled coolers If its cold enough for a jacket then you need a cover on your cooler One thing that harley owner should know is the oil needs to be hot enough to steam off moisture in the oil Too cold of oil pulls in moisture from the air around us which contains moisture Remember water boils at 212 deg F at sea level so if your oil is not getting hot it could be allowing sludge build up
Doc do you need to re-tune the bike after installing an oil cooler? I ride mostly in city traffic and my 2005 twin cam gets my right thigh medium well while at a traffic light.
Hello Doc, thanks for your videos!! I own a road king 103 from 2011- original-except air intake I believe. EIMTS is often on. I would like to make sure that the engine is cooled enough and improve the comfort. With the catalysator there is also lot of heat from the exhaust: what is the best for my me: cool flow fan, or adding the Harley fan cooled radiator. I believe that each of them can be mounted, possibly not with all the functionalities.
According to my catalog neither will fit your bike. A HD oil cooler will help the motor. I prefer the Jagg 10 row with fan or the ultra cool with fans. To help you feel cooler....stick your knees out in the wind :) Thanks ~ Doc
1: Harleys had oil coolers for at least 50 years. Its not standard for all models, but they are not behind. Because they are not always needed on all engines or models, I agree with their route of having the people who do need it pay and let the majority not pay for a part they dont need. 2: Getting the proper grade oil that wont burn off in the temperature you're riding at is far more important, including doing an oil change if that environment is going to change when you do a long haul ride. 3: Shut up and ride while you still can.
Doc, …… i have question: Years ago I had a Sportster (1994) and there used to be an aftermarket round oil cooler that after you removed the oil filter you could screw on the finned oil cooler on and then the new oil filter behind it. It also gave your Sportster slightly more oil capacity along with extra cooling during very hot climates. During the winter time there was a leather sleeve that slid over the cooler to block the now much colder air flow on the fins but still allowed for a tad larger oil capacity w/o having to remove the cooler. I wanna say HD used to sell this product but have not seen one in 26 years. Any ideas on who made these animals and where/how I can get one now for my bike ?
I almost thought you were going to down them like a lot of techs do. I am all for function over looks (unless it is as ugly as a Suzuki Maduro or B-King). I am thinking about getting one for the crazy hot summer rides.
Hi Doc, what are your thoughts on OILBUD hidden oil coolers, any experience with them? Looking for an oil cooler that will be the most efficient for my 2008 FLHX with a 103ci installed. My bike always ran hot since new, even without the upgrade to the 103ci. Your help and knowledge is deeply appreciated, THANKS and stay safe!
Brian I truly appreciate the question. I did not know about oilbud coolers. I am looking into them. Before your question I have been looking into Jegs and ultra-cool. I am a true believer in a fan with a cooler for those stop and go traffic moments. There are key points. 6 row vs 10 row. How much CFM the fan capability. Thermostat fittings and fitment. Do your research as I am. An oil cooler is definitely a great addition to any Harley-Davidson. Thanks ~ Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Hi Doc, I want to thank you for taking the time to answer my question and give me suggestions. After my research and much debating, I've decided on the Ultra-Cool 3.0 dual fan assisted oil cooler. I'm looking forward to much cooler ride! Thanks again Doc, be safe!
Thank you for this video Doc. I looked into putting on one of these coolers until I heard from a forum member a while ago...that in cold/cooler temps, the cooler can cause the oil to "froth" up and that would NOT be a good thing. I didn't hear you address this. ???
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I understand that you can also add a bypass valve that you can shut off the flow to the cooler for those of you who live in colder climates.
Doc, I was listening to Kevin Baxter video on camplate n he talked about oil coolers. He disagrees with Harleys system because it flows dirty oil thru the cooler first n then thru the filter. He uses Jagg coolers.
If Doc hadn't gone the "mechanic" route, he could have easily went into politics and become an ambassador to unfriendly foreign countries. He has a way of explaining where if you read between the lines a subtle message comes through. * oil coolers work. Trikes run hot. Pay attention to your machine. Pay attention to what HD upgrades through production runs.
Does the oil that cycles through the oil cooler the primary oil. ? Sorry I honestly don’t know. And I had something hit my oil cooler and it began to leak slowly.

Hey Doc I have a 2018 Harley Breakout anniversary with a 117 Screaming Eagle kit fitted can I upgrade the oil cooler on my bike does the one you show fit my bike and can I get it from you I'm in the UK
Sir, It gets hot out here in Texas. I have a 2017 CVO Street Gide. It’s set up to be water cooled. Would it be overkill to add a fan assisted oil cooler. What do you suggest the temperature should be for the 2 fans come on? What should the temperature be to turn them off or what should the differential temperature be? I was told 8 degrees I think it should be more.
Yes I would add an oil cooler with fans. Read the fine print when choosing. Many oil coolers with fans do not fit on twin cooled Harley-Davidson with the lowers and water pump. My Jagg with fan comes on at 210. Thanks ~ Doc

If it does, you will see it on the front lowest part of your frame (in front of the engine) with the lines going into the motor right above the oil filter.
Doc I have a 2016 Heritage with an add on Harley cooler. It runs in the 220 to 230 degree range with 20w 50 oil. I changed my oil and went to straight 60w oil. its over 98 degrees here everyday. I guess the cooler did not like the thicker oil and doesn't flow as good. My temp now goes up to 270. I have went back down to 20w 50 and the temp lowered back down. Have you ever heard of this? I was following the owners manual with the recommended weight of oil for the outside temp. With the thicker oil the engine was quieter. (stock engine clatter)
This is news to me. You followed all the right thoughts. What type of oil cooler do you have, and how are you monitoring your oil temp? In theory an oil cooler does have very tiny passages for the thick oil to pass through BUT most oil coolers have a thermostat that controls when the oil passes through the oil cooler so the thickness of the oil should have no influence on control of oil temp by oil cooler. This is a question I will ask Harley after you tell me what oil cooler you have and how you are monitoring oil temp. Thanks ~ Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson The oil cooler is a Harley Davidson Brand. I am monitoring the oil temp with a Harley analog oil temp gauge. The oil cap one. During the years of AMF-HD, they added oil coolers to the Shovelheads. It did not last but a couple of years as it was not efficient. I have had two bikes I added oil coolers to. One Shovelhead and one Evo Heritage. A big waste of money. The best way to keep your bike from damage of overheating, stay out of parades and backed up traffic. I know the traffic is not something you want to be in but that is the biggest problem with overheating engines.

Now in the Texas heat , the air is preheating the air to the forward cylinder , and sending a blast furnace of scalding air to the rear cylinder …
YOUR opinion please , sir ?
My opinion is strong. Every one is under the misunderstanding that this large "oil cooler" in front of the front cylinder is for the motor. It is not! It is only to cool the front and rear exhaust valves. With the size of the M8 motor the Motor it self need a 10 row with fan oil cooler besides the center oil cooler. Like the old days. Yes I would rather have two oil coolers on each side of the frame tubes and let the front cylinder receive fresh air. I am stepping down from my box now....Doc

Thanks for that most detailed response !
I was “ happy “ to see them install this oil cooler ; I was just shaking my head and asking myself -
“ WHAT were their engineers THINKING ? “
I love the way he said “Hopefully” 😂
Yep I use and still do a.. transmission or power steering cooler loop.. on my shovel
That’s where it all began….Doc
Got my daily dose of Doctor Harley
I am going to install the fan assisted oil cooler on my 2017 ultra classic run hot and wanted to not worry on street lights
I never got the oil air cool concept but they cleared up a lot for me
Oil cooler was 1 of the reasons I went with Victory Cross Country instead of a Harley in 2016.
Un-Victorious
I'm very pleased with my 2018 road king, it's fun to ride.
You sound like a 12 year old.
Doc, Will an oil cooler help for my bike? I have a stage 4 setup and it runs hotter than normal with the cams, and heads . But in traffic I dont think this would help? at lights and such.
Awesome insights Doc !
I’m ( still ) highly disappointed that HD didn’t follow Jagg’s engineering by having the location of said oil cooler to either side of the down tubes of the front of the frame to allow
“ clean air “ for the oil cooler AND clean air to hit the front of the front cylinder ! ( instead of placing the new HD cooler directly in front of the engine )
This was a poor choice on the Motor Company’s part ; it would have been NO MORE expensive to have chosen this better location. , IMHO .
Peace ☮️
My 2019 softail slim came with an oil cooler but without an electric fan. Would it be possible to have an oil cooler with an electric fan installed by the dealership?
HD does not offer a fan assisted oil cooler for the Slim. I went with Jagg 10 row with fan..I love it! Doc
THANKS clear and clean explanation!!
Great video Mike
Thank you
Old timer told me on non thermostat controlled coolers
If its cold enough for a jacket then you need a cover on your cooler
One thing that harley owner should know is the oil needs to be hot enough to steam off moisture in the oil
Too cold of oil pulls in moisture from the air around us which contains moisture
Remember water boils at 212 deg F at sea level so if your oil is not getting hot it could be allowing sludge build up
I agree completely. I do want to add. A customer covered his oil cooler for the cold months. He forgot to remove it!!!
Doc do you need to re-tune the bike after installing an oil cooler? I ride mostly in city traffic and my 2005 twin cam gets my right thigh medium well while at a traffic light.
No re tune with an oil Cooler addition. But maybe look into your tune.
Timing might be too advanced at idle....Doc
Doc What's your opinion on Love Jugs oil cooler ?
Thanks again doc, salute 🤚
Salute👍….Doc
Well you at least convinced me to get an oilpan cap that has the thermometer for my sporty. After awhile I guess I'll see if I need an oil cooler too.
Just more stuff to break.and increase weight
Where do you ride? I ride in Arizona in the summertime almost everyday, I don’t have any issues
Ha Doc, how about the twin cooled model of the 17 CVO with Stage iv? How's that cooling compare?
Twin cooled is awesome in controlling heat. I don't believe anyone is offering a larger oil cooler or fan assist at this time. ~ Doc
Doc, I own a dyna low rider 2015 it gets hot often I did everything but it's still hot. Would a oil cooler help?
For the motor Yes for you maybe….Doc
Check V-Twin web site and ask the cool dudes at Lowbrow customs...Doc

Whats your thought on the HD 260082-05c cooler for a 2000 RK ? Thanks .
Yes go for it. I am a big supporter of a oil cooler on any Harley-Davidson. Thanks ~ Doc
How come the oil cooler that HD makes for the sporsters doesn't come with a thermostat?
After my research and much debating, I've decided on the Ultra-Cool 3.0 dual fan assisted

Do any of the oil coolers available for sportsters (any brand, harley, jagg, ultra cool...) have thermostats?
Yes. Each that you posted offer.....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I am much obliged, doc.
HD of Gastonia did my oil cooler. It was hard to make it not leak, but they finally got it right. 2000 Heritage
Its a Harley...... I thought it WAS supposed to leak ??? Y did they fix it ?? Haha
Thank you for this video Doc. I looked into putting on one of these coolers until I heard from a forum member a while ago...that in cold/cooler temps, the cooler can cause the oil to "froth" up and that would NOT be a good thing. I didn't hear you address this. ???
The Harley-Davidson oil cooler mentioned has a built in thermostat that is used to prevent a "froth" up from occurring due to cold temperatures.
Thanks Doc
Very informative mate. Dont think I'll need on in Ireland but just checking, and now I know.
Good stuff Doc! Thanks!
Do you recommend a oil cooler for 2019 Harley iron 883 ?
Does the oil that cycles through the oil cooler the primary oil. ? Sorry I honestly don’t know. And I had something hit my oil cooler and it began to leak slowly.
Have you ever tested whether it's really worth it to purchase a Dooxi Car Adaptation products?
Doc Harley Harley tri glide 2012 have an oil cooler from factory? and thanks

Mike, i have a 2012 FLHRC that looks like it has a factory oil cooler but my TC103 even with synthetic seems to run hot and limp mode comes on too soon in my opinion......help any ideas?
Hey Doc, Would I need an oil cooler on my 2017 Street Bob? It’s got stage 2, aftermarket Reinhart exhaust , and the engine cam. Or is it good for the engine over a the lifetime of the engine or bike, high mileage, etc? Not planning on doing stage 3 or 4 but maybe in the future.
Glfmar Madison your bike should do well as is, just make sure it has a good tune.
I bought an extruded cooler, a thermostat and made my own custom brackets. Hardlines are about to happen.
Hey Doc I have a 2018 Harley Breakout anniversary with a 117 Screaming Eagle kit fitted can I upgrade the oil cooler on my bike does the one you show fit my bike and can I get it from you I'm in the UK
Is there a oil cooler for 2013 triGlide 103 engine
I don’t see your being Twin Cooled so yes. See your local dealer, Jaggs or Ultra- cool…..Doc
Brilliant advice
Sir,
It gets hot out here in Texas.
Hey doc I have a xvs vstar 250 with cold air intake custom pipes drag style and a 115 main jet I took off the air injection system I use mobile 1 racing 4t oil would you recommend an oil cooler for my bike
Hi im building a 2013 street glide air cooled harness etc.... ive bout everything for it from ebay.. so..when it came to getting the engine.. ive purchased an 2014 liquid cool ultra limited twin 103 engine.. now.. ive purchased the liquid cooling system..but how to hook it up to a 2013 oil cool harness and bike...
Great vid Doc. I own a 2018 lowrider, does it have an oil cooler.

I was running 250 to 260 before I installed the oil cooler with 20-50 oil. I also have the Screamin Eagle oil pump assembly to try and flow more oil.
@@georgedishman3276 I ride a 2014 Fatboy Lo with an S&S 124 with 585 cams. My oil measures 250 - 270 degrees also (measured on my analog dipstick). I’d like to shave 40 - 50 degrees but I’ve heard most guys are only seeing a 20 degree drop in temp. I live in Canada…. so no Arizona heat here.
Is it possible to ad a oil cooler on a Yamaha V Star 750? Your comment! Thank you.

No need to drain. In fact after installing you’ll need to add oil👍….Doc
@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thanks, I watch your videos, some two or three times, they are very enlightening. I just bought a 2012 switchback with low milage but a bit neglected. I've been doing maintenance upkeep myself. One exception so far, abs brakes will be attended to by the Harley dealer.
Doc. I have a 2012 Roadking police, I was wounding if Harley makes a fan assist cooler for my bike or do you know of a good aftermarket one
Harley-Davidson offers their tried and true premium oil cooler without fan. There are several aftermarket manufacturers who are offering an oil cooler with fan (s)..Jaggs and Ultra Cool are at the top of the list. Do your research, follow the reviews by people who have installed and rode with them in the heat. Thanks ~ Doc
Have you ever looked at Love Jugs? What are your thoughts?
I don’t have enough experience with this aftermarket product. H-D offered a fan as an accessory for police models with side cars. It helped in their line of work. I like oil coolers with fans. Thanks ~ Doc
Hey Doc. What's your opinion on Love Jugs? I live in Savannah and as with you, it can reach 110 heat index daily during the summer riding months. My 72 gets me to work and back home as many days that dry weather allows. I was thinking about installing the jugs as opposed to an oil cooler. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I prefer an oil cooler but the love jugs could work.
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson thanks for the quick response.
100% right. This is the answer. Jerry knows his shit
