    Thank you so much for your video. I was born in England, my family emigrated to Canada in 1967. I managed to go back in ‘88. So great to meet my family and spend time with my nana. I only went to two castles. Alnwick, which was like being in a fairy tale it was so rich and beautiful. But Bamburgh! I can’t explain how I felt. Standing by the canons facing the sea! The power of it! The beauty!

    Thank you for taking me on a trip to a location I can only hope to visit one day with my wife and kids ( I live in upstate NY near Canada). I am learning more about the castle as time goes on. Baron William Armstrong was my grandmother's great great uncle. History truly comes alive when it is something in your own past.

      save up and visit, you will love the area. Take a look at my Cragside House video, this was owned by the Armstrongs. It was the home of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm, and the first house in the World to be powered by hydroelectricity. Its not far from where i live. I hope you enjoy browsing through my videos and enjoy them, thank you :)

    I visited here last in late November last year. It was the last place I visited before the coronavirus outbreak. If a castle as beautiful as Bamburgh can survive for so long, I'm sure we can get through this too.

      I hope you enjoyed your day there. Unfortunately there are so many who aren’t staying home at the moment and chatting in groups, I know of a garden centre that shouldn’t be open yet is and as long as people continue to be so selfish then it’s going to take an awful long time to get back to “normality”.

      Bamburgh Castle is one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain. The Castle contains layers representing more than 2000 years of continuous occupation, while the landscape around the castle rock has over 6000 years of history.

      Earlier dating castles were built of wood, Bamburgh is probably no exception. The current castle is a lot younger than the original one built on the same site so there would be a very good chance it was also built of wood 🪵

    • @Raybo1uk
      @Raybo1uk  3 роки тому +4

      The real-life Uhtred the Bold was ealdorman of all Northumbria from 1006 to 1016, and he was the son of Waltheof of Bamburgh. The castle of today was built later although there are still parts of older builds visible. No paintings as far as I am aware 😄

    The inside decoration is more of 1600-1700s right?

    • @Raybo1uk
      @Raybo1uk  3 роки тому

      Hello Marc, there are 14 Staterooms all with their own unique decor but I suspect the majority were decorated by William Armstrong and his family although many artefacts date back to earlier dates. The Great Keep is probably the only part which dates back a lot earlier (around 1100) with the original mediaeval stone works forming the base of the structure. The walls are eleven feet thick to the front and nine feet wide elsewhere. The Keep sits on a massive plinth to stop attackers digging underneath and setting fires to collapse the walls.The original castle was built around 547AD. Bebbanburg as it was known was named after Bebba the wife of Aethelfrith and it’s original name was Din Guayrdi. Bebbanburg means “Bebba’s fort” which is where the name Bamburgh castle came from during the time old Celtic names were being replaced by Anglo-Saxon names. A magnificent castle which is actually closed from 4th-12th June for more filming.
