I feel weird replying to a comment but I get a rather different read. I don’t know how much these songs are about romance or relationships. I feel like No Surprise is definitely about broadening your horizons for sure, but more so as like a letter the listener. They dropped this record around the time that they were also hopping on huge tours and festivals, playing in front of a lot of faces that, outside of punk and hardcore/some metal and pop punk, had never seen the dynamics of a hardcore/metal/extreme music show. I think the live aspect of turnstile, and really all hardcore bands, is the main attraction. They just so happened to also make a record that has a ton of really ear-worm choruses and beautiful production and dropping at a time where the cultural conversation around rock music is general becoming more positive. “Under ground, swinging and we’re missing with the lights off“ is a local hardcore show mosh pit wrapped in cute little lyrical bow. As someone who plays in bands, and thinking about the grind that this band has been on, TLC feels like a thank you to the audience. The thrill of seeing people jump off stages and knock each other out to your bands and sing every word you wrote back at you with more intensity than you is a feeling that fills you with more gratitude than you can imagine. Really makes you remember being the one in the crowd. Those last lines of TLC are a rip on a old sly & family stone track but to me really feel like they see themselves in us. They see the hardcore kid at the local show they were when they were a kid and it’s what allows them to be Turnstile. Idk maybe I got a completely wrong reading on it but that’s my take
CAN't STOP WATCHING AND SHARING WITH RANDOM STRANGERS, HELP ME! Seriously I am telling everyone i know about you guys, i have been spinning your album non stop in my playlists, you have seriously modified my mood in a positive way, thank you. Your energy is infectious. Hopefully that stays metaphorical for everyone reading this, and we all make it out of this madness alive and well.
Same, I've been telling people about them since before their debut album even came out. I knew they had huge potential. So happy to see them finally blowing up.
Undeniably innovative and barrier breaking. I grew up with Minor Threat, Misfits, Pistols, Black Flag, Agnostic, DK, and metal, etc. Few bands have gotten me this excited for new music for a long time. As much as I like heavy hardcore and metal, today's hardcore scene with gore vocals leaves me indifferent. Copy/Paste. This. This is mind-blowing. Art. The Shape of Punk to Come... Relationship of Command... I wish that 2 years from now I'll be able to say it was the Smells Like Teen Spirit of this generation. It would feel so good. Un. Fucking. Real. Thank you.
Some of the freshest hardcore I’ve heard in years. And the perfect antidote to the past year. First song - the band is separated and each performing alone. Second/third song - we all exit our houses, embrace our friends and make up for lost time. Last song - we embrace human connection again. Bring on stage dives and pile ons!
@@bassieb97 I’ll clarify more. Exact same vocals. You don’t think it’s just a coincidence this guy came out with one full length and got mainstream popularity?
This album reminds me of when my boyfriend and I first started dating. The very first night we spent together, he showed me 'moon' and I fell in love with this band. So much nostalgia. We're expecting a little dude in january, would've never imagined having the life I have right now. Every time I come back I get this feeling I used to have with Tom in the beginning, the butterflies and so. What a bliss, can't wait to show this band to our son
it's 90s-ish but it also has a lot of modern inspiration in terms of scope I LOVE the production on this album, it's not super-stadium fake drums esque but it's not like a 90s production either.
I think critics and fans get a little wanky about how Turnstile is “barrier-breaking” and “genre-shattering.” Maybe so. But the music is just fun. It’s got great energy, and it makes you feel weightless and careless. I’m here for what these kids are making. Love it.
It's definitely can fun but it can also be so light that it gets pretty forgettable. Nothing they did here was truly amazing and honestly alot of it was just filler lo-fi beats or interludes. Entertaining to watch, sure but to say it's groundbreaking is a tough sell. Watch it, enjoy it a bit and move on. It didn't really provide anything outside of that for me.
In a scene where most bands have become blend and generic, TS manages to refresh their sound at every release. Their music is very contemporary in the sense that they don’t treat their music as being hardcore music,, they treat their music simply as music, without limitations or barriers. On another note, they know how to bring positivity back into their sound, something that disappeared off the radar since the 90’s in hardcore music. It feels good and refreshing. Sorry if you didn’t fully appreciate what they’re doing here.
@@ourielzeboulon If you truly analyze and critique it outside of being a fan it just does not hold up to the standards that this comment section is giving it. The fact that they are exploring things past hardcore and probably don't want to be labeled as hardcore anymore is fine. There are many sounds out there that are fantastic that are not hardcore. It's not an issue of "oh they are not hardcore enough anymore" it's just that the whole idea of them doing something super innovative and unique is totally off base. They are not the first band to come from a small core scene and groom their sound into something more palatable and different, they are not even more fun sounding than a lot of other bands. Nothing here is jumping off the page as something totally unique and for some reason people forget the countless times bands have gone in this direction (not 100% sonically but definitely in spirit & ideology). Honestly, there is probably 5 to 6 min max of music in an 11 minute ep. It's nearly impossible to say something is so pivotal at this length, there just is not much here. Like I said, it's fun, entertaining and worth giving a listen but it falls short on aspirations of being some sort of pivotal piece of music like this admittedly biased comment section believes.
100%. Especially in hardcore which tries so hard to gate keep the scene and sound. TS just says fuck it we're gonna do it this way... which... is hardcore.
At 48, I thought I’d be the only old fuck leaving a comment. Well apparently I’m a year late (it happens as you get older kids), and not the only one dealing w/ a mortgage & elderly parents that has fallen for these guys’ music. Thx to the band for making me shake my ‘just scheduled my first colonoscopy’ booty like I was at a Fugazi show back in 91. Seriously, I appreciate it.
Thanks to Travis Barker and MGK for putting the spotlight back on Punk music. I know MGK is Pop Punk but still it helped todays youth look up Blink 182 etc.

They see the hardcore kid at the local show they were when they were a kid and it’s what allows them to be Turnstile. Idk maybe I got a completely wrong reading on it but that’s my take

Me too lol I’m driving people nuts

I think critics and fans get a little wanky about how Turnstile is “barrier-breaking” and “genre-shattering.” Maybe so. But the music is just fun. It’s got great energy, and it makes you feel weightless and careless. I’m here for what these kids are making. Love it.
I cant listen to them at night or else Ill never get any sleep. Gets me too hyped.

@@defestushabongaraneliarfed1198 yeah, stop being such a gatekeeper. or you gonna change your mind just like most of the gatekeepers i know?
Swifty mosh material 😂
I couldn’t love this any more than I already do. The songs, the vids, just perfect. Don’t change a thing Turnstile. You had me at TLC.
They give me faith in the future of rock music. So refreshing.
Need more
Saw you all at Rock am Ring 2023 and it turned me onto your sound. Great performance there!!!!! You all are killing it
This is a lot of fun. Literally my 3 year olds first intro to this music coming from mostly Disney soundtracks and now we start every morning dancing to it. Love you guys and thanks for the memories.
ART LIVES HARDCORE LIVES
It's like Helmet, Incubus, and Beatsie Boys had a baby and it's Turnstile and I love it. Rare to hear new rock music that made me feel like I did the first time I heard all those bands. edited...throw some Unwritten Law in there too.
Weirdest comparison I've ever heard read.
