I sometimes have a tin of salmon knocking about and mix it with mash, season it and form it into patties. Then dip them in flour both sides and fry in a mixture of butter and oil, they go really nice and crispy like a batter. You can put parsley or herbs in the mixture but l just put salt and pepper in. A lemon wedge over it works or ketchup, l have encona hot pepper sauce but l have it on everything usually lol. Cheers Gaz, the farmfood ones look tasty like the ones from the chippy!

Wow!... That was a big shock to be honest mate... I've not tried either of these yet... But i don't think i'll bother now with the Harry Ramsden's Jumbo Fishcakes Gaz... The Farmfoods Extra Large Fishcakes look good... And are fantastic value... I would love a couple of these Farmfoods Extra Large Fishcakes... Served with some Chips... Peas... & Parsley Sauce... 😋 Whoever it was that put you onto the Farmfoods version (Well done!)... I think the Harry Ramsden's version is trying to represent itself as something like you'd find in your Local Chippy... But obviously missing the mark by a long way... I'm sure deep frying either of these Fishcakes would enhance their overall taste... But also for the price paid too... It's a no brainer really... The Farmfoods version wins hands down... Thanks for the review Gaz... I've got a couple of your videos to catch up on in the next day or two... I'm so glad to hear that your "Good Lady Wife"... Has now recovered enough for you to restart your regular Foodie Reviews... Stay safe guys... All the best... Cheers. 🍺
Farmfoods is a hidden gem for quite a few everyday foods. I go to Farmfoods once a month to pick up certain items. Will give these a try out. By way that microwave Donna Kebab you taste tested from there went down a treat with my lad. Keep it up Gareth, well done☺️
Michael Alker our FF stopped selling the Donner meat.I love noodles FF does a Mayflower range of 3 different kinds.I tried them all but the salt and pepper chicken was best only £1.50.
Nice review gareth not had any of these but I now know which one I would buy the fishcakes that I always have in my freezer are from Iceland 10 breaded cod fishcakes for a pound 10 pence each and they are 41% cod and they are quality 👍👍
My wife goes crazy over those jumbo jet farm foods fish cakes , it's amazing what tuns her on ! Keep up the fantastic videos , and your down to earth attitude. And all the best to you and your family, and I'm pleased your wife is getting over the virus! God bless you !
Hi, Gareth. Another interesting review. There didn't seem to be a massive difference between the two. Going by looks, you would think the Ramsden fishcake would be superior but just goes to show that you shouldnt judge by looks alone. Haven't had fishcakes in a while. It's put me in the mood now..lol.Keep up the great work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Great review , my own preference would be breadcrumbs on a fishcake so I'm really pleased. Quite a saving too . Thank you for all the brilliant and fun food tests .
Good comparison. I can't eat them myself as I am gluten intolerant but my wife and I never buy anything with palm oil in it. My wife and son have eaten the Harry Ramsden ones and were not that impressed with them.
The farm foods ones looked quite good and they were excellent value. I always buy M&S fish cakes now. They are the best I've ever had also you can get different fillings besides fish
The farmfood ones have less additives so they might be better for you but they don’t say what kind of fish they used. I recon that they used the trimmings from more than one species of white fish. It’s not something I would buy because I live near the top two fishing ports in Scotland Fraserburgh and Peterhead. That means I can easily get fresh fish landed 6 days of the week.
Hi Gareth, I personally really like the Harry Ramsden fish cake range, and I can also highly recommend Harry R mushy peas! They are fab tinned mushy peas, far better than Batchelors, in my view. I'm just about to sample M and S brand new luxury 'Signature' 'Our Best Ever' fishcake. Have treated myself to a pack of them in my Ocado shop, will be delivered tomorrow - looking forward to indulging - 👍 😁 Another great video. Nice one, sir! 👍

I like a fishcake like the style of farm foods in a bun lettuce tomato tartare sauce or mushy peas and fishcake in a bun. I buy the Birdseye ones the 4 pack but will try a visit to farm foods when I visit uk in April 😃
Oooh..never thought of that. Really good idea, I'm gonna try that.thanks for tip I can't believe after years of eating fish cakes.( 54 yrs), 😳I didn't think of that.I can't wait to try 👍👍
The Farmfoods cake resembles those you used to get in the Chippies in the South of England when I was growing up, which generally seemed to contain a mash of fish, potato and some herb (possibly parsley). The Ramsden one still looks quite "mashy" in the middle, which I find disappointing - when I lived in the North (Yorkshire and Lancashire), the fishcakes served there were also battered rather than crumbed, but they were the size of saucers and contain large flakes of white fish and pieces of potatoes; fantastic value, and delicious - I used to swap between getting these with mushy peas, and getting the regular fish and chips!
Never a big fan of fishcake . I had that luxury steak pie 🥧 I mentioned the other day from Aldi. Again probably the best tasting steak pie you can eat . Their stunning...the richness of the gravy is unbelievable... definitely a must try !!!
@@BaldFoodieGuy ....I don't think I've seen it tbh. It's an Aldi steak pie for 2/3 ppl it's also available as a chicken pie too. The amount of chicken you get in that pie is off the chart...too much. Both super highly recommend Matey. Keep up the brilliant videos . There a breath of fresh air 👍🏻
When it just says white fish or mixed white fish, it mean it's made using any type of white fish flesh, but if pollock is used it states pollock which is as good as Haddock and just as tasty... but I'm more of a cod fan. But the Harry Ramsden's fish cakes did look good, maybe they would have tasted differently if they had been pan fried. 😋
If it just says 'fish' I would avoid just in case it is Basa, the Vietnamese river fish, with a reputation for contamination. Please tell us what it is!

I had a recommendation for you to try.. from Morrison’s Market food kitchen hot food counter on a Sunday : Sunday Roast Chicken Dinner .. you get half roast chicken with Yorkshire pudding roast vegetables & roast potatoes & cauliflower cheese & broccoli & gravy for £7 it’s great portions and really nice tasting!
Keep,up the good work. Fish cakes have ALWAYS been breadcrumbs for heaven sake. And does salt go,with fish or what. Another delight added to my food, guy menu.

ASDA 8 Breaded Cod Fishcakes 400g £1.75 45% minced cod are our goto, but we will give the farmfoods a try as well. About the airfryer when we got ours we sort of followed the guidelines and used a temp probe till we nailed down the temp and times for our airfryer, we normally pull the food 5 - 10 degrees under and allow carryover to finish it depending on the food. I will point out my cousin has the same airfryer and his one can take 45 secconds to 1 minute longer to cook the same food. We tested it side by side because they where using our timings an setting and getting different results. I assume the guides temps and times are on the high side to avoid getting sued for whatever reasons lawyers can drem up, so use a temp probe and common sense.
Provide the main event on the plate for a family of 4 or for max 2? Unless the cheaper option really rank - it's a no-brainer isn't it and you can still have a little cash left for something else!
Hi, I just subscribed. Me and my son had Morrisons fishcakes, chips and homemade parsley sauce, the fishcakes were horrible. I am gonna have to try the farmfoods ones. Thankyou for sharing. x
I've tried many a fishcake and I honestly believe making your own is the only way to go if ya want decent one! Some chippies have good ones too but usually not!

I asked the groceries manager and he said about 2500 lines had been removed across all lines this year due to supply chain issues. Something to ponder, maybe overstock the pantry, and stuff the laundry room with bog rolls.
I love fishcakes, there is not the variety in Australia, just Birds Eye and Jamie Oliver's and Aldi has them, all pretty ordinary. Your ones looked great, big and tasty, well priced. Yep chips and mushy peas, vinegar all over, lubby jubbly.
Hi Gareth they look scrumptious I think we will be having some of those and thanks for the address 😀 and good to hear your good lady is getting back on her feet 😀 xx
Love video mate always love fishcakes did you like that thanks again for kind replys thankful we are so much shaun n tracy 👐👐👋👋👐👐👋👋 have a nice day praying here no more blackouts
Fish cakes are one of those foods that got some reason l prefer the cheaper ones ..they remind me more of fish shop ones with a good mix of potato, fish and parsley. Think l prefere breaded ones too .. great in a bread bun with a bit of tartar sauce or just butter and salt and vinegar. Since you've made thos vlog ASDA now do a large 2 pack in their yellow brand ( fresh not frozen) they are really good with lots of fish in them.
Another useful comparison, but would be even more helpful if you calculated and presented a per kilo comparison for each item. What happened to the Yorkshire fishcakes I remember whereby a slice of fish sandwiched between 2 slices of potato was battered and fried? Brian Day
Hi Gareth. I have been watching your videos for a while now, and really enjoy them. A while ago you mentioned about the Birds Eye beef burgers with onion, well I had these as teenager, a while ago now ☺, and after you talked about them I thought I would have some. Well we just tried some, wish we never bothered . They have changed, and not for the better, they were horrible ☹, very disappointed
I only like Birds eye beef burgers, but now you come to mention it , they don’t compare as before, have they removed the onion ? Because to me if food doesn’t have onions it’s lacking in flavour .
Another great review pal I haven't been getting any noti on yt lately will have to go back through ur vids these Harry ramsden fishcakes take so good I put them in a brioche roll with a bit of tartar sauce lettuce and tomatoes excellent
Another great video Gareth, you could put them in a bun with Tatar sauce. Add thick cut chips, fried egg and mushy peas, maybe for you have chilli jam on the chips.👍
Yes and also Farm Foods sells Mango Chutney sauce , and Crucials with a white sauce , to add more interest, a good Vlog Gareth tyvm, as people have replied to you I have jotted down on my Farm Foods Shopping 🛒 list what to buy !
M&S Salmon fishcakes two for £1.80 are nice😋 I miss savory rissoles😋 ASDA 4 frozen cod fishcakes £3.00 get a good write up....do contain some Pollock though, crafty!😊
I have tried both these brands and have to agree with you. Yes, the Harry Ramsden fishcakes have haddock and more fish, but at the end of the day for that price difference you would expect the taste to jump out at you. Sadly it doesn't ~ so another winner winner for dinner! :) Great video once again, thanks.
Gareth love fish cakes chips and peas not had for years, always had growing up great memories l think farm foods look tasty l like in breadcrumbs that's the ones we had growing up glad good Lady wife is feeling loads better, ♥️😋😋😋
as you say deep fried or fried will always be better hence its something i always do with fish, sausages and burgers, mind you i oven cooked some burgers after seeing you do it and must say they were lovely. keep it up buddy.
I love salt too. I've just been eating some roast potatoes that I cooked in the air fryer and I sprinkled lots of salt on them before I cooked them. You would think that the Harry ramsdens would contain more fish and better taste, Thank you for doing this review as I was thinking of getting those Harry Ramsdens fishcakes. It just goes to show that the most expensive is not always best.
Used to have cheap fish cakes all the time as a kid (cooked in the deep fat fryer of course) but can't remember the last time I cooked one at home. Probably only had about 3 or 4 in the last 20 yrs, all as a chippy extra. Dunno why I don't have them more often in honesty!
Nooooooooooooooo! I was just on my way to bed, but now I'm craving a fishcake! Anyhoo - I haven't got any , so I'm going to have to make do with dreaming about them....... Good night and God bless you and your family, love from Wales! :-) xx
Fish cakes look like the chip shop ones 👍🏻… the jumbo haddock fish cakes look “spot on” 😉… put them in a crusty roll sauce .. whatever sauces and .. delish 🤤
Could be wrong but the farmfoods seem to have a shorter list of Ingredients. I'd hope Harry Ramsdens would be pretty basic when it comes to ingredients. I think the Harry Ramsdens is over price considering they're cheap to make as you're mixing fish with potato.
Hi Gareth, I saw u try a Chiquita pulled beef burrito from Iceland so I bought the pulled pork one.. still haven’t tried it, can you try this one so I can see it in the flesh, so to speak . Be watching live tomorrow
Yes, but salmon has a very distinct and strong flavour, I think these Fish Cakes are marketed for busy working mums and dads. Salmon is too strong a flavour even for me.
Sainsburys used to make a fantastic Fishcake, then they changed it, less potato, very sparse fish and the coating was different, such a shame, I feel they use it as a loss leader, get you in buying, then change it for a cheaper option.
Hello again Gareth, here in West Yorkshire a fish cake a.k.a. a fish sandwich consists of a fish fillet sandwiched between large slices of potato which is then dipped in batter and fried. People either ask for sandwich and chips or cake and chips depending where in West Yorkshire they reside. Now that the price of fish and chips has rocketed skywards, it make sense to go for a cheaper option.
The Harry Ramsden's is bulked out with potato, I prefer cod over other fish , with Harry's your paying for the name and because it's haddock. One thing to remember about sea fish they reckon there is plastic inside all the fish caught but it's not put down on the side of the box lol
Have you notice they keep making food items smaller and smaller and calling them "jumbo" /"giant". Notice it with burgers and biscuits and chocolate. This is another example where make it smaller and put it in big packet and call it" jumbo", I have tried the Iceland fishcake and Fish Fingers and like them both.
Hi Gareth. I was the one who recommended the farmfoods extra large fish cakes. I also said they looked like and tasted like the real chip shop ones👍🏼

I assume the guides temps and times are on the high side to avoid getting sued for whatever reasons lawyers can drem up, so use a temp probe and common sense.
Thanks for the story and tips
I would take a pair of the budget fish cakes vs one of the Ramsden any day of the week.
Provide the main event on the plate for a family of 4 or for max 2? Unless the cheaper option really rank - it's a no-brainer isn't it and you can still have a little cash left for something else!
yes definitely Anna.
I still love the Birds Eye pack of four one's. Still taste the same as they did years ago.
Hi, I just subscribed. Me and my son had Morrisons fishcakes, chips and homemade parsley sauce, the fishcakes were horrible. I am gonna have to try the farmfoods ones. Thankyou for sharing. x
Thanks for subbing! your welcome. Im going live tonight at 8 please drop in.
The farmfoods ones look more like the fishcakes served in chip shops in the black country, they look very nice.
I've tried many a fishcake and I honestly believe making your own is the only way to go if ya want decent one! Some chippies have good ones too but usually not!
yes Jay making your own is best.
Thanks for this video, I'm learning a lot from your testing 😊I've subscribed as well.
Thanks for the sub! Welcome to the channel Colin.
Really enjoying your reviews.
thanks 😊
Great vlog Gareth, I’m with you with the Egg and chips 👍 lovely .
yes cant beat runny egg and chips.
An update ASDA 8 Breaded Cod Fishcakes 400g are no longer on sale at our local asda. JUST ESSENTIALS by ASDA 10 Breaded Cod Fishcakes
500g @ £1.89 and ASDA 4 Classic Salmon Fishcakes 460g @ £4.75 and ASDA 4 Classic Cod Fishcakes 460g @ £4 from there own label plus 2x youngs and 1 x birdeye fishcakes left on sale. One whole freezer unit use to be fishcakes now less than half the rest being fish fingers which have also seen alot of lines deleted.
Yep chips and mushy peas, vinegar all over, lubby jubbly.
cheers for the heads up Leslie thanks 😊
I have just bought some of the farmfoods fishcakes on your recommendation.I look forwards to trying them.
Enjoy pal
@@BaldFoodieGuy Tried 2 of the fishcakes last night. They were spot on.
Cheers pal 😋👍👍
Hi Gareth they look scrumptious I think we will be having some of those and thanks for the address 😀 and good to hear your good lady is getting back on her feet 😀 xx

No problem 👍 good to know powere is back on.
@@BaldFoodieGuy for now n thankyou for taking time out for replys 👋👋👐👐👋👋👋 from us both your the best
Thank you Colin 👍
Another useful comparison, but would be even more helpful if you calculated and presented a per kilo comparison for each item. What happened to the Yorkshire fishcakes I remember whereby a slice of fish sandwiched between 2 slices of potato was battered and fried? Brian Day
Great point!
🏴👏 great honest review Mate, you got to tell it how it is ! 👏🏴
Thanks 👍
Hi Gareth. I have been watching your videos for a while now, and really enjoy them. A while ago you mentioned about the Birds Eye beef burgers with onion, well I had these as teenager, a while ago now ☺, and after you talked about them I thought I would have some. Well we just tried some, wish we never bothered . They have changed, and not for the better, they were horrible ☹, very disappointed
oh dear sorry to hear that Sonya. 😞
I only like Birds eye beef burgers, but now you come to mention it , they don’t compare as before, have they removed the onion ? Because to me if food doesn’t have onions it’s lacking in flavour .
You need to be sponsored by Iceland on there adverts? Any of those fish cakes between a cob/barm/roll/sandwich with some vinegar deffo 10/10 😃
haha cheers
I suppose there is bound to be more flavour in a mixture of fish? I will definitely give those a try.
Hope you enjoy
Another great review pal I haven't been getting any noti on yt lately will have to go back through ur vids these Harry ramsden fishcakes take so good I put them in a brioche roll with a bit of tartar sauce lettuce and tomatoes excellent
cheers Vortex, yes i thought you had disappeared. Glad to know your well pal. Had mine on buttered bun with salad cream.
Learn to spell!
Another great video Gareth, you could put them in a bun with Tatar sauce. Add thick cut chips, fried egg and mushy peas, maybe for you have chilli jam on the chips.👍
yes thats what i did with the two halfs left. Well salad cream for me. Went down well.
Yes and also Farm Foods sells Mango Chutney sauce , and Crucials with a white sauce , to add more interest, a good Vlog Gareth tyvm, as people have replied to you I have jotted down on my Farm Foods Shopping 🛒 list what to buy !
M&S Salmon fishcakes two for £1.80 are nice😋 I miss savory rissoles😋 ASDA 4 frozen cod fishcakes £3.00 get a good write up....do contain some Pollock though, crafty!😊
thanks 😊
Loving video
You are so kind
Great review, made me laugh when you said "sustainable, more for another time" lol
Glad you enjoyed it haha did I lol
I love these farm food ones they are always in my freezer! Good work mate.
cheers Steve. 🍻
I have tried both these brands and have to agree with you. Yes, the Harry Ramsden fishcakes have haddock and more fish, but at the end of the day for that price difference you would expect the taste to jump out at you. Sadly it doesn't ~ so another winner winner for dinner! :) Great video once again, thanks.
thanks very much, much appreciated 👍
Gareth love fish cakes chips and peas not had for years, always had growing up great memories l think farm foods look tasty l like in breadcrumbs that's the ones we had growing up glad good Lady wife is feeling loads better, ♥️😋😋😋
cheers Kim yes back to normal now thankyou Kim xx
as you say deep fried or fried will always be better hence its something i always do with fish, sausages and burgers, mind you i oven cooked some burgers after seeing you do it and must say they were lovely. keep it up buddy.
cheers Ian, will do.
Def worth money for 8 from Farm Foods compared to Harry Ramsden's 2! Never been in Farm foods have to look in.
cheers Pam.
We like the farmoods fishcakes .we have a box in the freezer now . Good valve for money .hubby's happy with them ..
thanks 😊 yes tasty ones these.
I love salt too.
I've just been eating some roast potatoes that I cooked in the air fryer and I sprinkled lots of salt on them before I cooked them.
You would think that the Harry ramsdens would contain more fish and better taste,
Thank you for doing this review as I was thinking of getting those Harry Ramsdens fishcakes. It just goes to show that the most expensive is not always best.
thanks yes love salt lol
Used to have cheap fish cakes all the time as a kid (cooked in the deep fat fryer of course) but can't remember the last time I cooked one at home. Probably only had about 3 or 4 in the last 20 yrs, all as a chippy extra. Dunno why I don't have them more often in honesty!
go and treat yourself.
Interesting as taste is must important
Nooooooooooooooo! I was just on my way to bed, but now I'm craving a fishcake!
Anyhoo - I haven't got any , so I'm going to have to make do with dreaming about them.......
Good night and God bless you and your family, love from Wales! :-) xx
Sorry! lol xx
Another great video. Unfortunately don't have a Farm Foods or would have tried them.xx
Sorry to hear that Janice x
My favorite fish cakes are youngs jumbo fish cakes they are so nice
Gareth go to Aldi and try the frozen 2 Melt in the middle sweet chilli salmon fish cakes they are delicious.
yes i must, sound delicious 😋
Haven't had fishcake for years might have to give them a try
treat yourself lol
Fish cakes look like the chip shop ones 👍🏻… the jumbo haddock fish cakes look “spot on” 😉… put them in a crusty roll sauce .. whatever sauces and .. delish 🤤
yes i had mine in a bun, very tasty and salad cream lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy ye to right gaz can’t beat a bit of salad cream 👍🏻✅ well played👌🏻
Usually a lot of the cheaper ones have filling that’s like mush. I like the Asda ones with chips and tomato sauce.
sound good Rob ive not had the Asda ones.
mum said we'd try the farmfood ones now cheers
Could be wrong but the farmfoods seem to have a shorter list of Ingredients. I'd hope Harry Ramsdens would be pretty basic when it comes to ingredients. I think the Harry Ramsdens is over price considering they're cheap to make as you're mixing fish with potato.
yes you think it would be the other way round wouldn't you.
I have to argue it's about the taste, sometimes it's about total meat/fish content.
How much was the 8 fish cakes from farm foods gaz? Might get some 👍🏻
1.99 Jay
Thanks mate 👌🏻
Hi Gareth, I saw u try a Chiquita pulled beef burrito from Iceland so I bought the pulled pork one.. still haven’t tried it, can you try this one so I can see it in the flesh, so to speak . Be watching live tomorrow
ive done them both i think Peter will be in my iceland playlist.
I recentlty bought the SALMON fishcakes from Aldi twice as thick as these and seriously WOW
Yes, but salmon has a very distinct and strong flavour, I think these Fish Cakes are marketed for busy working mums and dads. Salmon is too strong a flavour even for me.
I use to love fish cakes, but I haven't had one for years, now I really fancy one ...
Farmfoods, of course ...
enjoy Glenda
Great review, to be honest, just from the pictures on the box I would not have got the farm foods
Enjoyable video as always ☺ 👍
Thank you 😁
Sainsburys used to make a fantastic Fishcake, then they changed it, less potato, very sparse fish and the coating was different, such a shame, I feel they use it as a loss leader, get you in buying, then change it for a cheaper option.
Now that the price of fish and chips has rocketed skywards, it make sense to go for a cheaper option.
hello david
The Harry Ramsden's is bulked out with potato, I prefer cod over other fish , with Harry's your paying for the name and because it's haddock. One thing to remember about sea fish they reckon there is plastic inside all the fish caught but it's not put down on the side of the box lol
yes ive heard about the plastic John.
Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
cheers Barbie x
Have you notice they keep making food items smaller and smaller and calling them "jumbo" /"giant". Notice it with burgers and biscuits and chocolate. This is another example where make it smaller and put it in big packet and call it" jumbo", I have tried the Iceland fishcake and Fish Fingers and like them both.
yes got the iceland fish cakes they are really small compared to these.
