I remember seeing this at junior school and being terrified of the scene where Coppelia is revealed to be an automaton, watching it now it seems so innocent and wholesome.
What memories. I remember seeing this at primary school and being entranced by the animation, music and story. Got to go and see the real thing now in Birmingham in March. Thanks for taking me back to a part of my childhood.
Loved watching this as a child on Music Time. It's been a favourite piece of classical music of mine ever since. And now my daughter has successfully auditioned for the English Youth Ballet's performance of Coppelia later this year.
I've not seen this for about 40 years! Often thought about it as it fascinated and scared me a little but I was mesmerised as a kid. We went to see it performed at The Birmingham Hippodrome in the early 80s Thanks for uploading
Tina Bristow thanks for the comment, it had a mesmerising effect on me as a kid too, there’s something a bit eerie about vintage stop animation anyway, but the story was something that stayed with me too
I can still remember watching this when I was in Primary School when I was about 6 in a music lesson, this really left an impression on me as a kid, I could still remember the scenes where Dr Coppelius angrily chases the two kids, the scene of Swanhilde climbing up the stairs with the candle, Dr Coppelius opening the curtains for Franz, Dr Coppelius getting hit on the head with the cymbals and Swanhilde and Franz running from the house at the end for years afterwards, the scenes with Coppelia moving did scare me as a kid, I used to think she had been turned from a human into a mechanical doll, great to see this years later even though I still find parts of this unsettling!
I still have this on vhs - BBC Musical Tales - which has The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Petrushka on it as well in the same style. It was definitely my favourite video, I'm surprised it didn't wear out. So sad that the others from that video aren't available on youtube.
I had this on vhs too! Rainy weather caused roof to cave so a lot of the old vhs tapes we had were damaged😞 This video brings about a lot of nostalgia, plus I love the music.
The mechanical doll looks like aunt sally from worzel gummage , I wonder if the figures are kept in a museum somewhere the animation is really fluid a lot of time and effort put into the whole film it's charming and scary at the same time ,
This brings back so many memories for me, but for some reason I thought it was a Czech animation. This and their animation of Peter and The Wolf are what got me into classical music so as far their mandate goes it was job done!
I always remember this from when i was at school. To this day i remember this and had to look it up to see if it was on you tube. Was tad creepy that is prob why i still remember it.lol
Could anybody please help me find the title of a stop-motion short film from the 90s? It was about a man who had to undergo eye surgery. During his recovery, his vision was not very good. There was a nurse who helped him complete his recovery, but due to his still weak vision, he perceived her as a fairy. Once he fully recovered, he could not recognize the nurse who had helped him before, but he missed the fairy he believed had helped him. At the end of the short, the man realizes that the fairy was actually the nurse, and they fall in love. There is a scene where the man walks by the park and sees a couple of lovers kissing, which makes him feel sad an lonely.
Funny story. This story was the inspiration for my final college project and I remember thinking "what kind of crazy guy falls in love with a robot? That would never happen to a woman like me" Flash forward to today and I have a crush on a Megaman X character 😅
Great memories remember having this as a child on VHS I have been looking for the petrushka version of this that was on the same tape BBC musical tales does anyone have it to upload many thanks
I've been looking for the Petrushka one for years. I have seen this one, sleeping beauty and the nutcracker but I loved the petrushka one. Need to find someone who has it lol.
I just looked it up on Google and both Wikipedia and Broadcast For Schools have it down as 1978 but it also appears to have started broadcasting in 1972, which would make sense to me because I remember seeing it around 1974.
@@B-A-L Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. That's the thing with music, you can remember where you were when you heard it. I just know I didn't hear/see that in 1978/9.
I had a collection of these on vhs I was obsessed with ballet and loved them
I grew up with these beautiful stop motion ballet animations on VHS. It is so wonderful to see them again 😊

Wow! I am so pleased that you enjoyed this. It stuck in my head also as a child, on Music Time, hence the upload x
That's good for your daughter and I wonder what role did she get?

I rembered from school days too.
Me too, I was around 7 or 8 at the time. I also remember Peter and the wolf too which was the spark that ignited my love for classical music.

Lovely
Comparing Coppelia to the story of Galatea, I'd say this was a much more fulfilling story on all ends!
Funny story.
