My recoder tutor always said if you make a mistake carry on. She said ,You know you've made a mistake and I know but the examiner( when I was going recorder grades) might not realise it. If you keep going back to the beginning when you make a mistake you just get to know the first part well and not the rest.
You may not want to always practice the whole piece. It's important to work on smaller sections to learn slowly and to resolve technical issues. While practising sections, it's a good idea to stop if you make a mistake to avoid learning that mistake for good. It's hard to unlearn a mistake. Separate from the section work, there is the play through. Here the goal is not to fix issues but to learn to play the whole piece without stopping.
Hey Cally. Many thanks for the excellent session. Sooo many great points and reminders!
Thanks Cally. I need to be reminded regularly to organize my practice sessions. I tend to just make it up as I go along and I waste time and feel unsatisfied because I don't progress as well.
Thank you Cally! Great tips!
Thanks a million for your tips for Clarinet. I actually practice in my closet because I live in an apartment. I want to get a Clarimate so that I can practice without disturbing neighbors after hours......
I have a strong interest in jazz, so when I practice, after a few scales and long notes, I do a bit of noodling (improvising around nothing in particular) before approaching the sheet music that I want to work on.
3. true! I couldn't count the time I tell my mom "Can you not play the piano while I play the clarinet?!"
Lol!
Any suggestions how to work on the following problem. I'm working on the Shepard on the Rock. I'd like to play the last 15 bars at quarter note = 120. I can play every bar at that tempo, but I can't put them all together. I always mess up after a few bars. The same thing happens if I start in the middle. (I have similar problems with other pieces.) I've tried taking longer chunks, but I can't get beyond 2 or three bars. It's very frustrating.
when that happens to me it usually means i'm trying to play the large section faster than my brain can connect the small chunks. if that's the case, i usually have to do a lot of reps of the whole section at a slower tempo so my brain can "connect the dots"
Same outfit / Uniform everyday. Sounds like the military or other Federal & Civil servants.
