I saw this movie in the theater, and the big screen was awesome! The weird thing is that I don't think this is a very good movie, but it's still one of my guilty pleasures only because, as far as I know, it's the only well-made, big-budget alien invasion movie from the perspective of the grunt infantryman. It's so unique, like reading The War of the Worlds or watching The Thing for the first time. I think it'll become a flawed, yet well-loved cult classic!
One thing I really liked about this movie was how (despite being a pg-13 movie) it didn't shy away from the grittiness and brutality of ground combat. A whole lot of alien invasion movies often soften the violence. People die either in big explosions or blown up in a fighter jet or get shot by lasers that turn them into dust, there's no blood, no mortal wounds, every moment is heroic. But I feel this movie did a good job capturing the fear, chaos and confusion that infantry have to deal with. Trying to traverse hostile territory while getting shot at from every direction, trying to get your boys out alive while carrying wounded men, maintaining communications and a chain of command while everything goes to shit. This movie just felt so much more real then a majority of alien invasion movies.
I love this movie. I know a lot of people crap on it for some reason,but I can't help but enjoy it. That scene when he's naming his soldiers name/ranks is just a phenomenal scene.

They were just different. They still fired projectiles, and had their own tactics. This makes for more tense situations as your protagonists seem to have some sort 9f chance.

LOVE THIS MOVIE! There were talks of a Sequel but sadly it was cancelled as the film barely made enough at the box office, $212 million dollars against a $70 million dollar budget. If it had made $400-500 million, it would have been a film franchise.
I was a fan of this movie right away, the alien invasion sub-genre is my favorite. One of the scenes of the movie has the bus pulling onto the freeway, and the shot pays homage to the grandfather of all alien invasion movies, 1953 War of the worlds. Love that little easter egg that they put in.
Besides the Alien and Predator movies this movie is my favorite Alien movie. When i went to see it in theatres the whole crowd was screamin and cheerin and sayin "WOH!" The whole time was great! Those were the days to go to the movies man.
One of my favourite stories about Gen. Patten in World War II. He was ordered not to attack a certain town and to retreat before the German advance. Patten got on the radio to command and asked 'What? Do you what me to give the town back?'

I love this film. There's one line in it that inspires me and means everything, because it's applicable to EVERYONE. It's when Nantz says to the young boy: "...because Marines don't quit." That single line fills me with more hopefulness and courage every time I hear it.
This movie was really underrated. It had its flaws but the concept was really interesting and the squad dynamic I really found to like. Would have wished it had the opportunity for a sequel to really improve on its shortcomings but oh well.

It was better than I expected when I saw it opening night. Its rare that sci fi movies make any kind of effort for realism. That being said... this should have been a multi episode, multi season TV series, similar to Band of Brothers. Whenever a war movie is constrained to 90 mins or even 2-3 hours... the character arcs, pacing, the tide turning in the protagonists favor, etc...its going to feel rushed. -- My main nitpick, having served with 2/5, is that we didn't go around saying "Retreat Hell" a few dozen times each day. I do appreciate the Marine Corps history, and the efforts and little things that they did get correct. Even though most civilians wouldn't notice and the Hollywood critics wouldn't give a shit about. If the military isn't portrayed as evil oppressive antagonists, or as goofy, grossly incompetent cannon fodder... the critics scathing reviews will scream "Pro military! Pro war!! Pro conservative!!" (smh) But whatever. Overall I give it a 7/10. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. The best part was the way Santa Monica looked under siege from the air, during the deployment stage. As cool as that scene looked though...helicopters bringing in troops from Camp Pendleton to Santa Monica airport would not have needed to fly over all of that...and risk getting shot down or collision with dropships still incoming. But whatever, it was entertaining. Should have been a series for better character development and a more protracted war.
It wasn't Whitehouse Down, it was Olympus has Fallen, with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, great movie! I enjoy the sequels too, London Has Fallen, and Angel Has Fallen.
They shot much of this in Shreveport. It got in the way of my morning commute. Thing was, there was one building next to the highway that looked ripped open, like Godzilla had clawed it up. I never saw that building in the movie. They also had a HUGE green screen at the end of highway 49. You would think they would just use CG.
Dude you gotta watch Battleship as well now. Really wish they had made those movies to be in the same universe and characters showed up in both. Battle: Los Angeles and Battleship are actually 2 of my favorite military/war movies.

To lose your squad is similar to losing your family . Sarge was kind of an orphan that nobody wanted , hence he was about to leave . Sarge found , or earned , his new squad and regained his sense of belonging. Was very well done
The crazy thing about the aliens is that the reason they invaded was due to the fact they are losing a civil war on their homeworld and are desperate for resources. Think like the Germans invading neutral Belgium in WWI.
Ah yes waste precious resources fighting another alien species for their resources while already losing a civil war back home, guess intelligent life isn’t so common in the universe after all

It might be a cliche...but screw it.....I love how at the end of the movie....the Sarge starts to replenish his ammo and the rest of his squad just follows his lead. He knows there's more work to be done and his squad is going to follow back into battle.
They need to make more of these. Like a Battle New York, Battle Toronto haha or Battle London. The possibilities are huge lol They could've made a franchise out of this.

What I appreciated most about this movie is how grounded it was made and the documentary style of filming the scenes as the ground troops work their way in foot through the city. Instead of giving us the old trope of aliens blasting away at humans from fancy air crafts it played them in the ground which made it more submersive to me. Entertaining banger of a movie and what makes it good is the main reason it didn’t perform well at the box office. Disney and Hollywood have everybody wanting flying saucers with aliens shooting green lights and city size lasers.
This one of those movies that everyone was like, yeah it was ok... Honestly there so little to dislike in how this movie does it's thing. Especially if you come from a military family

Fucking great movie! Also fun fact, this is very losely based on actual events. In 1942 the military shot anti aircraft on the west coast for nearly an hour thinking there was an invasion from the Japanese but there was nothing shot down and nobody knows what exactly was the cause.
The beach thing still makes sense because if you think about it how many times are cities evacuated for hurricanes and tsunamis and people are still on the Beach watching it
Bad thing is. I had a team leader named Sgt Nance that was the complete opposite of what this Ssgt represents. He talked me into buying a 2003 VW Jetta for over $1000 a month at 28% interest as an E2 when I first joined in 07.
Some MREs are terrible, some are worth stabbing over. I’ve eaten so many, that even as a civilian I could tell you if the one in your hands is worth tasting or if you should just guzzle it down as fast as humanly possible.

I don't know why this movie gets so much hate. I thought it was a pretty good sci-fi action movie. It's nice to see an alien invasion movie where Earth isn't totally helpless. There have been worse alien invasion plots in movies. Glad you watched it.
If you want an alien movie where Earth is helpless, check out the 2010 film 'Skyline'. One of the alien weapons is a fancy blue light that hypnotizes people that look directly at it, so their bodies can be harvested. The aliens have excellent self-repair systems, so even after one of the alien motherships gets hit with a tiny nuke (delivered by drone so a human pilot never directly sees the light), the mothership is still slowly repairing itself. I didn't care for it because most of the movie is focusing on a few people who hide inside an apartment and are merely watching what is going on via telescope, instead of doing something.

What I like about the movie is that the alien invasion is obviously technologically advanced but on much more equal footing with US armed forces than we usually see in movies. Here's some fun facts from behind the scenes: the aliens are from a war-ravaged aquatic planet and they are not the strongest faction on their world. They got their asses kicked and were forced off world by the dominant species and they invaded us for our natural resources, mostly water. Also, their head is mostly sensory organs. I like that if you look closely, you can see their ranks. Alien officers are thin and have robotic legs and you can see medics dragging their wounded into cover.
32:30 - should have been "there's nothing coordinating the drones any more". So the drones would enter hover patterns and defend themselves, maybe seek out unknown radio signals, maybe support a neighbor that is under attack, but the command center coordinating everything is gone.

This is a great example of an "Alien Invasion Movie" that wasn't really about the alien invasion, it was about the squad.
Plus it was like a human vs human war both sides lost troops and gained ground

I disagree. It's not a great film, but it's a fun movie. It's a tight action movie with good looking explosions. What's not to love?

This movie was filmed at Barksdale AFB while i was serving. So cool watching and driving some of them around
One thing l liked about this movie is that they actually got the reticle of the ACOG sight that Marines were using right.
This film is a personal favorite. The LT was a damn hero, as was the dad. Hell, all of them were, but those two stood out.

Fucking great movie! Also fun fact, this is very losely based on actual events. In 1942 the military shot anti aircraft on the west coast for nearly an hour thinking there was an invasion from the Japanese but there was nothing shot down and nobody knows what exactly was the cause.

The beach thing still makes sense because if you think about it how many times are cities evacuated for hurricanes and tsunamis and people are still on the Beach watching it
Bad thing is. I had a team leader named Sgt Nance that was the complete opposite of what this Ssgt represents. He talked me into buying a 2003 VW Jetta for over $1000 a month at 28% interest as an E2 when I first joined in 07.
This movie deserves a reward
As cheesy as this movie is at times I absolutely love it and watch it ever time it comes on.

I was born and raised on Camp Pendleton/ Oside is my town. If you asked someone from there why you on the beach they would look at you as the alien. 😂

I don't know why this movie gets so much hate. I thought it was a pretty good sci-fi action movie. It's nice to see an alien invasion movie where Earth isn't totally helpless. There have been worse alien invasion plots in movies. Glad you watched it.
If you want an alien movie where Earth is helpless, check out the 2010 film 'Skyline'. One of the alien weapons is a fancy blue light that hypnotizes people that look directly at it, so their bodies can be harvested. The aliens have excellent self-repair systems, so even after one of the alien motherships gets hit with a tiny nuke (delivered by drone so a human pilot never directly sees the light), the mothership is still slowly repairing itself.
I didn't care for it because most of the movie is focusing on a few people who hide inside an apartment and are merely watching what is going on via telescope, instead of doing something.

@@McPh1741 Apparently the aliens in Skyline never installed decent firewall systems to prevent the latent intelligence in a brain from taking over one of their high-durability combat platforms.
I'll never forget going to the theatre absolutely stoned out of my mind and this being the scariest movie I have ever seen. Good times.

What I like about the movie is that the alien invasion is obviously technologically advanced but on much more equal footing with US armed forces than we usually see in movies.
Here's some fun facts from behind the scenes: the aliens are from a war-ravaged aquatic planet and they are not the strongest faction on their world. They got their asses kicked and were forced off world by the dominant species and they invaded us for our natural resources, mostly water.
Also, their head is mostly sensory organs. I like that if you look closely, you can see their ranks. Alien officers are thin and have robotic legs and you can see medics dragging their wounded into cover.
32:30 - should have been "there's nothing coordinating the drones any more". So the drones would enter hover patterns and defend themselves, maybe seek out unknown radio signals, maybe support a neighbor that is under attack, but the command center coordinating everything is gone.
I rented this movie one time while on vacation and really liked. It's a fun action movie
