This word is an umbrella term that encompasses different variations of juniperus chinensis. Some of these regional variations include: Hokkaido, Itoigawa, Kishu, and Shikoku, named for the locations in which they were discovered. Beautiful and informed video.

I got direct information from someone who has learned from a proper bonsai master in Japan for a long time, and I gathered various information from Japanese websites and reorganized it. In bonsai, as well as in botanical nomenclature more broadly, the term "sargentii" refers to a species or subspecies that has been named in honor of a person with the surname Sargent. :D

Sargentii (as well as any eponymous Latin names with the ii suffix) is actually pronounced “sargent E I” (like the Nelly song 😂).
