I'd take sabre any day, with how difficult it is to land a shot in simulators like DCS or less serious games like war thunder, I can't imagine having the pressure of doing that irl. These pre missile era jet pilots were really skilled at what they did.

Hey Euan! Your young gun docent, Joe here! I do respect both aircraft and like both a lot. I will say I do lean towards the Sabre’s guns but the MiG’s cannons were definitely a more strategic value especially since the Sabres became a bit more influential later in the middle of the war.

I would choose the Sabre with the .50 cal guns. Thank you for the awesome videos of planes! I hope to visit the Air Zoo someday.

I have a fondness of a similar era aircraft, the Aeromacchi Impala, mostly because I did get to get up close and personal with them as apprentice, and the saying goes they were wooden aircraft, with pilots of steel. Then moved to the mirage, where you really could appreciate that, with enough engine, even a brick can fly. Did know the 60 million dollar pilot, who decided to eject when, in his words, he looked up and saw the trees were higher than the front of the cockpit, at his best glide angle of 35 degrees. He felt the aircraft impact just as he left it. I had worked on that airframe as well, though when he landed in the river bed i was in a department devoted to the NWS instead, so we all lost parts that day.

The Aeromacchi Impala is beautiful. We would love one in the collection!

@@AirZoo Hard to get, unless you come over and take one of the gate gargoyles away at Waterkloof AFB.

@@AirZoo Looks like they got removed, you probably will have to contact the SAAF museum to get one. They might want to loan one to you. They had a few in various states of disrepair. Check with the retired Brig Gen there, he is a very nice person.

as some typhoon pilots said during WW2, "guns do a lot of damage but use canons if you really want to blow **** up".

    At 1:12, that’s an LA-15 rather than a MiG-15. They’re pretty similar aircraft though.

The F-86 destroyed nearly 800 MIGs during the Korean war while the MIG took out 78 F-86's. There's no comparison. The F-86 completely dominated the MIG and contrary to what's presented in this video, the F-86 machine guns were very lethal. The combined rate for fire was 6,600 rounds per minute, and the light incendiary bullets had a MV of 3,500 FPS.

Mig is just a piece of junk. No match for the Sabre. I don’t know why people glorify the Mig.

I'd definitely take the F-86 and its guns over the MiG-15 any day of the week, one thing I've learned playing WT(I know it's not IRL, but lessons can still be applied) is 2 incredibly important things in a dogfight are gun time and density of fire.
If you dont have the ammo for enough gun time, you've got fewer chances to end the fight and you're less likely to risk ammo on a risky shot that could've won the fight. And with the fewer guns and lower rate of fire with the MiG's cannons and the high speed of jet combat, its entirely possible you could line up a decent deflection shot and have the sabre zip right through between your rounds without landing enough or any hits to end the fight.
That's not to say the MiG-15 can't be an amazing dogfighter, it absolutely could and proved that numerous times. But I feel it'd be easier or maybe "more reliable" dogfighting in a Sabre.
Then if there was still any doubt, I'd be all in on the Sabre once it got its cannons.

The one that could carry the most ammunition.
The one that could sustain fire the longest.
    That would be the Sabre.

50 cal rounds are much bigger than rifle calibre. I feel that 6 x 50 cal guns closely packed would do much damage to soft target like a mig

    • @petersutton1006

They worked great, an explosive shell in a fuel tank or engine did the trick. Later models were fitted with Sidewinders.

Probably neither, and would go for the Saab J29. (It already had 4 20mm autocannons and if i am not mistaken there was a model with additional afterburner)

I once chatted with a man who flew hurricanes in the blitz during WW2, he insisted he always shot at the machine not the pilot. It makes me wonder if Sabre pilots shot at the pilot more than the machine...
