I'm told oak is a bad wood for chopping boards due to the tannin content (stains metal utensils) and because it's quite porous and tends to soak up oils from food which can then go rancid. Really enjoying your videos btw!
Can you design a shooting board? Interested to see how you'd go about it

Epic. Good to see a simple project us benchless, workshopless and with limited space beginners can use the techniques for. Guitar / bench building and the like are a bit daunting for my level. Already some useful tips for the ladder project I'm building for my daughters sleeping platform. Bit off topic but is there a way to shoot the end grain of those thick boards you cross cut? All the shooting board vids I've seen show pretty thin stock, the rungs for my ladder project are 4x2 and try as I might they haven't all been cut exactly the same length. Looking forward to the rest of the content. Thanks
Nice to see a non-endgrain cutting board. One thing though: I really don't like beech for cutting boards, it warps and cracks like mad when it's in contact with water. In the Netherlands almost all wooden kitchen utensils are made from beech and all of them last a couple of years at best.
Beech colour variation: you almost certainly know this, but red beech is sometimes steam-treated, which gives it a more even colour and usually turns it into an even dark red shade.
It's probably too late now, since this was filmed earlier, but I would love to see those beech boards ripped into thirds, the pieces rotated 90 degrees, and the rift sawn ray flecks in the beech paired with the ray flecks in the oak. Clyde

Did you find a need to sharpen your veritas saws when recieving them or were they fine out of the box?

Hey Matt, great video! I have a 2 inch x 14 inch x 22 inch pice of solid walnut I was going to make into a cutting board. It has a number of good splits in it on the end. Any suggestions if I don't want to remove any of the material? They go pretty deep. Could I use epoxy?

Hi Josh. If you’re feeling a bit of a daredevil, you could always use the Dutchman Bow tie, or if you want to hide the cracks, an epoxy with a dark stain would sort it out. However, if you wanted to highlight the crack, then an epoxy with your favourite colour would work a treat. There’s a few options. Good luck!

I notice you are left-handed, but saw right-handed. Why is that?
I'm all over the bloody place! I use my left hand with pencil like objects, so chisels for example. Right hand for most other things.

I noticed that you used your Jesus Pen---gotta get me one of those. Why not a marking knife?

Never use plastic cutting boards. It's thought you can stick a plastic cutting board in high temperature dish washer, and it would kill bacteria. When plastic boards were tested against wood, it was found that wood killed bacteria, while plastic promoted bacteria growth, reguardless in you put it in a high pressure, high temperatue dish washer. There are many theories why wood kill bacteria, but no body knows why wood kills bacteria. A simple wipe with a soapy cloth, and a rinse will end up killing 99.9 % of all bacteria on wooden board. There are many people out there lying, but the truth is plastic cutting board not only don't kill bacteria, they also promote the growth, and protection of bacteria. The wet surface of plastic is the perfect environment for Bacteria, and worse, one the suface of plastic dries, the bacteria go into protective spore state, which makes them almost impossible to kill, unless you use heavy neutron radiation. Lately, they have been promoting anti bacteria plastic cutting boards. These are even worse for people. Bacteria exposed to a constant source of anti bacteria chemicals, become immune to the anti bacteria componds. If you get sick off these plastic anti bacteria boards, there might not be a medicine that will help you. There is a geat deal of wrong information out there about the safety of cutting board. If you disaggree, you are wrong, and you are killing people. Plastic cutting boards are dangerous. Wood is the only safe way to go. Also, plastic cutting boards are ugly as sin.
You forgot to mention some plastic boards are too hard, and dull edges.
well, coming back to watching a few of your videos, i can't say im shocked by your jesus pen usage and enterprise... I heard that business needed resurrecting anyway...
