    Very nice. They actually had lance slings in WW1 and earlier. You can find photos and video of them. Here's an excerpt about lance slings:
    "From 1836 shafts of bamboo were used exclusively until 1885, when problems of supply and quality saw ash, treated with linseed oil and tar, reintroduced alongside bamboo. All lances had a hide sling wrapped around the midpoint of the haft which and was looped round the arm when in combat to prevent the lance being lost and the wrapping of which provided a secure grip for the hand. On ash staves a leather protector sleeve was added to the bottom half of the shaft. This both provided a grip and prevented chafing to the shaft from the carbine when slung. This also enabled a 'D' ring to be attached so that the lance could be kept in the correct position when being carried in the stirrup bucket, which was ordered on all service lances in 1896."
    I'll check out the channel more. Congratulations on getting a role in Shadi's film, by the way.

    I also followed the link from Shad's channel. This ranks up there with his video on torches. Actually taking it out for a test in the woods was awesome. I'd love to see more experiments in just doing stuff as a fully-equipped adventurer (but with the spear point covered for safety). For what it's worth, the slung spear feels like it's 99% for travel or maybe while using the bow, but not in melee. It's arguably your most effective weapon, and you can throw it. So there's no historical reason to grab the sword until the spear is gone. Anyway, thanks for the fun video!

    Great video! I'm not one for needing to find a way how to carry a spear on my back - I have shoulders - but that looks as if it could also work for a longer travel. Anyone trying that should bare in mind to have something that protects their neck from the rope.

  • @AggelosKyriou
    @AggelosKyriou 3 роки тому +2

    Great idea!
    In my humble opinion the spear should be carried with the point facing the ground. Since the center of mass (~point of balance) is closer to the tip than the butt end, the spearhead will move around less since it will be in a much more stable position.
    On the other hand though, if you trip and fall down on the spearhead that'll cause a really nasty accident. Of course, a sheath for the spearhead will deal with this potential hazard.

    • @dawsonehlke1290
      @dawsonehlke1290  3 роки тому +3

      Seeing Shad demonstrate the utility of carrying it downward, I felt pretty dumb for not trying it in this video. I thought about it briefly, and I guess I shrugged it off, like a fool. I think my main concern was dirtying the blade--that fall I took might've scuffed it up a bit, but a sheath would fix that entirely and overall the downward method as Shad demonstrated seems best.

    • @AggelosKyriou
      @AggelosKyriou 3 роки тому

      @@dawsonehlke1290 sheaths are a no brainer in my humble opinion. They were used historically in Japan and I'm almost positive that they were used everywhere that iron spearheads existed. After all, you can't otherwise deal with the rain and rust and a sharp spear falling from the upright position (due to it's own weight) has enough momentum to cause a serious wound.

    • @Hugo-pg9hq
      @Hugo-pg9hq 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure I agree with this honestly. The point of the spear might snap off if you're not careful because random rocks exist.
      And well a spear without a pointg end is just a quarterstaff or walking stick.
      Edit: a proper sheathe would probably fix that problem but just a blade might become an issue

    Personally, I would take it like a bayonet rifle. Vverage spears length are at the same range as bayonet rifle in 17th century. So I would kinda place my points for sling very close to the end stick. Aside from that, it's pretty much the same & maybe I would rather carry it like a rifle, set aside in one arm instead crossing on the back, for easy/fast equip.
    BUT! there are actually multiple long rifle carry techniques! Something like in this video:
    ua-cam.com/video/W86QKxzkZxM/v-deo.html
    In any case, side carry with tip on upward seems most comfortable & safest for me personally. This could basically the same for spear carry.

      the video was great man from beginning to end. and while i was proud of shad for his accomplishment of getting his book both published and making a short film adaptation, id never been overly excited for it. i don't have much time these days to watch movies and while i would probably have seen it, i am now actually quite excited to see you act in it. congratulations on putting yourself out there, way out there and grabbing at what you want

    There's a video here on youtube called "DIY predator spear" I saw years ago where a guy made an attachment for a telescopic paint roller to thread on a cheap cruddy hollow handle survival knife inspired by the M9 bayonet.
    You could theoretically one-up that by getting one of those spearhead/survival knife gadgets that was designed specifically to screw onto broom handles. Idk if they're still made because nobody takes a broom with them when they go out camping, and big rig drivers do have brooms on their trucks to clean out their trailers, but they're not supposed to have weapons onboard.
    However, if they are, and you find one, you may find a paint roller that has the same thread as a broom. Hell, you might be able to commission a hiking staff that telescopes, and folds, and has a thread for such a knife. Some hiking sticks even have stun guns on them these days, so it's not outside the realm of possibility.

    Sling to me seems more realistic but... The Romans who carried both pilum and javelin (please don't quote me on which was the longer I can't remember) they would carry the longer one in their hand (like a walking stick) and the other would be slung across both shoulders underneath their pack (perhaps even with other stuff hanging off of it)
    HOWEVER... Carrying across both shoulders is obviously highly impractical if you need it in a hurry so... Yea i'mma go with sling

    • @chrisbaillie7813
      @chrisbaillie7813 3 місяці тому

      The only reason I'm interested is because as an occasional fantasy writer I'm struggling with ways he (the character) would carry his spear when he's not using it... And this has caused more issues than the combat side 🤦🤣

    • @chrisbaillie7813
      @chrisbaillie7813 3 місяці тому

      Also with your comment of the rope getting in the way I personally would have wrapped it once around my wrist similar to how you would a rifle sling. Thus giving you added support on that hand and also meaning you're less likely to drop it (how this would affect wielding said spear however I'm not sure)

    So you know, Modern History TV and Jason Knightly have posted a video trying out your spear sling from horseback. Sadly, he seems to have forgotten to mention you at all, describing it as Shad's spear sling. Here's the video: /watch?v=isfXD31sukc

    • @dawsonehlke1290
      @dawsonehlke1290  3 роки тому

      I loved his video (and all his videos). He was responding to Shad, not to me, so I wasn’t expecting a mention-I just put a string on a stick after all. I’m grateful to have even been a small link in the chain of the conversation!

    • @vanivanov9571
      @vanivanov9571 3 роки тому

      @@dawsonehlke1290 You "invented" (or rediscovered) the thing he is discussing, so you definitely need credit. It's not a "Shadsperiment" since YOU made it and Shad only commented on it. Jason seems to have missed that detail, which is unfortunate, as now people seem to think Shad "invented" the thing and don't realize you're any part of it. I didn't see even one person mention you in the comments, aside from myself.
      If you haven't already, I recommend commenting on his video and describing your enthusiasm, while politely mentioning you "invented" the sling.
      Even if it's just a string on a stick, it did demonstrate that a spear sling can be made, which is important to know when discussing spears. Particularly since there was a misconception floating around that you could not make a spear-sling.
