The New Joan of Arc Film - An Open Letter to Baz Luhrmann
When I found out Baz Luhrmann was directing a new film about Joan of Arc, I felt compelled to write him a letter.

There are many great online resources for studying Joan of Arc and her era. I highly recommend the following biographical books and will link to them below:
Joan of Arc: Her Story by Regine Pernoud and Marie-Veronique Clin
Joan of Arc: A Military Leader by Kelly DeVries
One would do well simply to adapt Mark Twain's novel. It is excellent.

I don't necessarily agree that actors have to have that much in common with the characters they portray (as long as they're visually similar enough to not be distracting), so long as they put in the work and do the research to portray the character as faithfully as possible. They are *actors* after all. The whole point is for them to be something they are not. I think it's much more important that they be able to put themselves in their characters' shoes, that they be able to empathize with their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Now sure, if they already have a lot in common with the character(s) then doing so will be that much easier, but it's a bonus, not a requirement, imo 😉. That all being said, I agree with everything else here 100% 😊!!!
@@SpiderboyN2Jesus I actually completely agree with this as well. That’s why I said first and foremost find the best actress for the role, which could be anyone from anywhere, who is the best at acting and doing all the things you said. But I think it’s always cool if at least an effort is made to find an “unknown” actor who really naturally fits the part and is genuinely talented at acting. But as I also say in the video, it’s not a must! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Beautifully stated. I came here from Matt Fradd’s Locals community. 🙏
Thanks for checking it out!
Thank you! Such a refreshing view, respectful and rich🙏🏽✝️🩵
@@suzanplumstead104 Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!
I first saw Joan of Arc, outside of a few vague mentions, in a video game called Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War. It piqued my interest and made me research who and how this person that wasn't a noble rose to such prominence. I know her story has inspired many people and if done well this rendition could inspire so many more.
Bro yes! I never played Bladestorm but I was a huge Dynasty Warriors fan and was intrigued by the context and character design of Joan of Arc in Bladestorm. I had also heard her name mentioned for years before finding out for myself why she was famous. She has a strange kind of fame. Everyone has heard of her, knows she had something to do with war, but few know the details of her story that would seem unbelievable if they weren’t so well attested.
Oh man! Great to see you back.
@@Aliusmi Thanks man! Appreciate the comment and happy you’re here!
Apt, to the point and 100% correct.
🔥🔥🔥
Such fire.. so wow.
Honestly, if you put as small flag on an 1.8 meter spear. Then you could create a harness on your standard bearers back. And put the spear there. So you can see which regiment your soldiers belong to from an distance. Especially on a battle field covered in smoke or mist. And in a pinch, if your standard bearer runs out of gunpowder. Or their main weapon breaks. Then they can take this flag spear off their back. And stab the enemy with their spear flag.
why is he lowkey handsome
Sling to me seems more realistic but... The Romans who carried both pilum and javelin (please don't quote me on which was the longer I can't remember) they would carry the longer one in their hand (like a walking stick) and the other would be slung across both shoulders underneath their pack (perhaps even with other stuff hanging off of it) HOWEVER... Carrying across both shoulders is obviously highly impractical if you need it in a hurry so... Yea i'mma go with sling
The only reason I'm interested is because as an occasional fantasy writer I'm struggling with ways he (the character) would carry his spear when he's not using it... And this has caused more issues than the combat side 🤦🤣
Also with your comment of the rope getting in the way I personally would have wrapped it once around my wrist similar to how you would a rifle sling. Thus giving you added support on that hand and also meaning you're less likely to drop it (how this would affect wielding said spear however I'm not sure)
"Leave your weapons at the door" Ok, I hope you have a while! * takes off bow, pole arm, quiver, scabbard with the sword, dagger from belt, knife from boot, throwing star from hair, another throwing knife from sleeve, other throwing knife from behind shield*
Having done larp in heavy armor, I have found that there's many things that you think are fine carrying/holding because you tried walking with it for a couple minutes but once you spend your entire day carrying that stuff, well it's not so practical anymore. Bottom of the story is, carrying that stuff like you did and showing off how it could work comes with a massive caveat that there's a big difference between that and carrying that stuff for days and in actual use
1:41 Hum from from a propeller engine comes droning through. 😆 The perfect Airplane! (1980) joke.
This is really cool!
Thank you!
Never saw someone looking more like an adventurer than you. Glad you didn't carry that axe. I wouldn't be able to handle that level of adventuring yet.
6:16 you might want to take a look into manchu bows. They are big, not as much as longbows but definitely not short and were also carried around on bow sheath. Also the sheath is not necesarily just for cavalry I think there are depictions of ming foot soldiers with such bow sheathes.
These sorts of experiments have more historical relevance than many people realize. Some period soldiers carried multiple different weapons & switched between them conveniently. Elite Ottoman cavalry could alternate between bow, sword, & short lance with ease & grace. Some Ottoman cavalry also had a matchlock firearm & mace in addition to these weapons. Two 16th-century texts assign a 5+ft lead maul to English archers. Henry Barrett's manual says the archer carried this polearm with a hook at the girdle. Roger Ascham mentioned how English archers might have a leaden maul hanging on their backs for fighting up close. Joseph Swetnam described a person who walked around in civilian life with a Welsh hook on his back. Etc. While I don't know of much evidence for wearing yew longbows on the back or for wearing spears on the back on foot, Qing infantry appear in paintings using firearms while wearing big Manchu bows in cases suspended from the waist & quivers full of long & heavy arrows. & some Chinese infantry used both bows & spear. One late-Ming manual describes a method of using both a full pike (heavy 16+ft spear) & crossbow. This involves wearing the small crossbow on the back tucked in the belt while marching with the pike in hand & then setting the pike down or sticking in the ground when ready to shoot with the crossbow. Another late Ming manual equips every soldier with either a pike or a shorter staff & with either a firearm or bow. Reading these sources makes me think that gear management was (& still is) a key martial skill.
She did say to you to have a nice 👍day.
The shorter it is, the closer it comes to being a javelin. Another very valuable weapon…
But now add a fireplace for a Christmas-y vibe

A guard and a ranger drinking and smoking together, sharing tales of their day to day.
8:00 Your enthusiasm and willingness to experiment are both commendable, but your simple "carrying test" isn't realistic enough because *you're not wearing any armor, including a helmet, or carrying any other gear, such as a backpack and bedroll etc.* which could potentially make it more difficult to carry weapons on your back. A helmet, in particular, could also interfere with retrieving items from your back. You also struggle to reach behind you to take arrows from your (back) quiver and discard your bow and spear to the ground before drawing another weapon, which is perhaps ok in a fight, but what about being able to stow them before drawing another weapon?
All very good points. I am wearing chain mail, that’s some armor. Some helmets would add difficulty, but others like a nasal helm and coif wouldn’t. There’s a lot more experimenting I’d like to do, and contexts to consider, if I make future videos. Other UA-camrs are doing great work on this sort of thing.
@@dawsonehlke1290 Thanks for the reply., 👍 My bad regarding the mail, but mail was particularly convenient to wear, which is probably why it was so popular. I suspect other types of armor could be more problematic. The same applies to helmets. Also, adventurers aren't soldiers, as they need to carry everything they need to survive on their person, which will necessarily limit how many weapons they can comfortably carry. Shad also overlooked this in his videos about this topic.
I love your outfit! Ur living my life!! You are me if I was me irl.
You did it!! I'm so proud of you!!!
Super, super grateful for both Shad’s and your videos on this topic! I’m a novice LARPer (only attended my first-ever game late last year!) and I’ve only played as non-combat/magical/support so far, but I’m interested in dipping into combat sometime soon, and my weapon of choice is the spear! I know this video is older now but I really appreciate the insight into wielding and wearing the spear. Your garb looks absolutely to die for, the layers and details are fantastic! 🖤✨
I’m humbled you found this helpful and informative! Its a brilliant weapon of choice-hope you find a beautiful spear and put it to good use in the LARPs to come. Which did you attend? I haven’t gotten to any yet, but I am planning to attend Reckoning next year. I’m intending to put what I presented in this video into practice as well, so I can adventure with sword and polearm. Appreciate your compliment on the garb, it took many years to come together.
@@dawsonehlke1290 I live in Southern California, so I have only attended Twin Mask regularly so far but it’s been a blast! Definitely an experience I recommend if you ever find yourself in the area, but YES have fun at Reckoning, I’ve heard of it as well! Sword and spear is a combo that can’t go wrong (I got a dagger and spear from Epic Armoury, so I’m just about near there :p ). Thank you again!!

You’re so very kind in that scene Dawson
I'm in awe by the solution you've come up with. While placement matters (quiver, spear, longbow) as your enemy comes closer, it's still just as effective if they come closer without you realizing, since you have your trusty sword. Kudos for the ingenuity demonstrated!
Nice 👍
Your just needs to stay dyed blue… I mean… uh, do as you please, oh Great Conqueror
Lmao. Amazing. Thank you.
Congrats on your first video! It turned out well and was interesting. I've got a few spears and I've always wondered how people carried multiple spears back when it was a thing. I would've been really annoying having to carry several spears on your way to a battlefield miles away. I'd wager they rigged up something like you made to help them manage their multiple spears and then removed it once they got to their destination. I live in and around Rochester, MN for around 15 years. I miss Minnesota, it's a great place to live. I don't miss the winters though. lol 😊
The answer to the shield is using a buckler. Much less cumbersome and awkward than other shield types. Held at arms length the buckler gives a better cone of protection than a larger shield held close to the body.

Yes. He misspoke, saying double bearded instead of bitted. But to be fair there is a Dragon Age greataxe called like that. So it is a more common mistake than you might think.
I was using bit and beard interchangeably for a long time. I recently learned my error.
