    Happy to see that you expressed the seven patterns are not modes, but simply 7 diatonic patterns. 👍
    Drives me nuts when people teach this as seven different modal patterns, when in fact every pattern has all the modes contained within them.

    Been looking for a decent channel on UA-cam for guitar that isn't a shlock fest and with someone who can actually explain things without a sales pitch. Think I found it...Thanks for your efforts.

    Thank you. I knew a simliar pattern but it was not based on the three notes per string, most focused on moving within a 4-5 fret box.

    • @zombieguitar
      @zombieguitar  Рік тому

      It sounds like you were doing it via the "5 patterns" method then 😁

      @@zombieguitar aw yeah you refered to that, I will watch that video. Question I was watching a video and the man referred to a 7 string pattern that continues indefinitely. Have you heard of that?

      If not, do a print screen at the right moment in the video,take it into paint, cut out the edges, and print it.

    So there are 7 patterns, but each of them seems to overlap with the one above and below it by such a margin that calling them seven separate things somehow doesn’t feel quite right, tho I admit I can’t think of any better way to put it.
    I spent the month of October getting the five caged shapes down, looks like I may get to spend the next month trying to get these under my fingers, cause for some reason three notes per string just seems like it makes more initial sense to me than the 5 positions did, and covers much more of the fretboard with any given shape.

    • @zombieguitar
      @zombieguitar  Рік тому +1

      Ahhh don't say "5 CAGED shapes" when you are talking about scale patterns!!! 😁

    • @brianmincher716
      @brianmincher716 Рік тому

      @@zombieguitar what do you call them then? The pentatonic scale shapes?

    • @zombieguitar
      @zombieguitar  Рік тому +2

      @@brianmincher716 yes exactly! The 5 positions are the 5 pentatonic positions. Right now you are focusing on playing the diatonic scale across the neck. I refer to this as "layer 1". The common ways to break up this scale into separate patterns is via the "7 pattern", "5 pattern" or "3 pattern" approach...
      People commonly and mistakenly refer to the 7 pattern approach as "modes". People also commonly refer to the 5 pattern approach as "CAGED shapes"...No one really talks about the 3 pattern approach, so there's no misconceptions around that one 🤪.
      But ya, this is just the diatonic scale. The CAGED system is an entirely different thing!

      @@zombieguitar Roger that, thanks so much for the reply/explanation. As a 48 year old trying to go from cowboy chords to actually being able to play the guitar up and down the fretboard with no childhood music training, it’s been tough to catch up on the terminology and it seems that even professionals don’t always agree on what to call stuff.
      So if I call the 5 pentatonic positions that, how do I differentiate between each one? Is the A minor pentatonic box that everybody learns as their first shape NOT the A shaped box? And does it not attach to the G and so forth to eventually wrap around spelling CAGE?
      Whatever you call them, it took a month to get them to the point that I can get thru each shape without having to stop and think about it, but working from one to another still eludes me at this stage of development.
      I’m now working my way thru the 7 three notes per string major scale positions, on day two of same. Spent yesterday getting F major position one from Guitar Grimoire The Exercise Book, and today’s mission is to master position two. I’m already liking this 3 notes per string thing.
      Thanks for your continued help, sir.

      @@brianmincher716 the thing is that you can label the "patterns" however you'd like. I prefer to keep the numbering consistent for both major and minor pentatonic...position #1 will always be exactly the same for both. However some other people will label the 5 positions differently based on whether the context is major or minor...
      The problem with assigning CAGED names to these positions is that it causes you to completely misa the point of the CAGED system...
      In any given position on the fretboard, you can play ANY chord you could possibly think of. The "position" part is based on the key of the music (layer 1), and the chords are based on the actual chord changes that are happening (layer 2). If the music is in one single key, then layer 1 remains constant, whereas layer 2 is constantly changing.
      This older video might help you explain it better 😁: ua-cam.com/video/oIt5F-OmjSs/v-deo.html

      This is the diatonic scale spanned across the neck using the "7 patterns" approach. This allows you to solo in any key, across the entire fretboard 😁
