Anytime I watch a Brian Kelly video it’s like some neurological path connect to another, he’s the ultimate teacher, plus you make it so easy to understand!!! I feel like I’m always getting confused by some videos but every single one of your videos is just so easy to digest. You truly are a great teacher and thank you for sharing your knowledge
I've literally watched hundreds of videos on these concepts and theory and this teacher has provided the best, easiest explanations of any. Thank you dude!
Your video on circle of 5ths opened my world that seemed locked for so long. And now you keep doing it. I watch a lot but you are the teacher that works best for me at this point in my journey and I Thank You.
Whoa!! A light just went off in my head, I've got it now!! I been trying to figure this out for a while. Nobody told me that major and minor use same "scale shaps" it's just where you start on the root note. I've been strumming guitar for over 30 years and decided I want to learn a little lead and after this I can!!!! Brian your the best teacher you break things down so well and explain every aspect so I can digest it. Thank you!!!!
Really concise breakdown of this stuff. I’ve seen other teachers make it more confusing than it needs to be. Breaking it into three patterns rather than a different shape for each note in the scale is so helpful. Thanks for sharing!
I learn seven positions three notes per string five positions with variations of notes per strings, I never once thought to combine them. This is priceless I feel like such a doofus.
This is the most insightful and informative lesson I have seen. I was never able see how to connect the whole fret board in terms of the major scale till now. Only under stood the pentatonic because memorizing the 5 shapes. Now you just solved the major scale mystery for me. Thanks so much! Keep up the great lessons!
Brian!!! Thanks so much for your lessons! I’ve attempted to learn more about the guitar and became frustrated. I’d bought a new guitar thinking it would help. Didn’t do a damn thing for me. Learned the fretboard. Learned more chords than I already knew. Started learning pentatonics, realized I was in over my head. Tried learning music theory. I was lost. I think you get the picture. I ended up letting my new guitar just sit there and eventually quit altogether. Pouring through UA-cam videos I happened to come across some of your lessons. Listened to a few and I was through the roof happy. Your videos are ideal. Picked my guitar and followed every word you said. In the last two days I’ve learned more about my playing and things make sense now. Thanks so much for your wonderful lessons. They have truly been a blessing. I also want to thank you for not showing everyone how fast you are on the guitar. No more guitar jamz for me. It pissss me off. Nuff said! Thanks again
Brian, thanks so much for making clear that which has been unclear for so long. You do have a gift for explaining music theory so it really all fits together.
I strongly suggest players to take this fretboard graph, and physically write in all of the notes in C Major. Then divide them up into all 7 positions and fill the graph with just the one position. Instead of writing just a dot, write the name of the note in each spot. Do that and you have a very solid foundation for all music theory. Great lesson as always Brian. ^-^
Thanx for putting these diagrams on and playing them with the chords. They help a lot and make perfect sense. And the 3 note per string is easier to memorize then the old Pattens. Great work.
Great video. This is the best video I have found for understanding how to play across the entire fret board for Major and Minor keys. I like the video so much I decided to buy your book. The book is a great reference book. Love it. Thanks for the great work.
Great video! This should clear up so many issues for so many musicians. The best explanation of so many confusing concepts in one video, you nailed it on so many levels. I'm sending this link to all my friends. Thank you, I can't wait to get my guitar and play!
i can see that you are true teacher who really wants to make musicians. the way you think of the time of the people who are seeing this vedios, the way you are giving your tips....salutes to you man. loved it. God bless you.
Another knock out video. These are perfect for the beginner/ intermediate. Not so much for someone brand new to guitar because it's too much. However, with practice and repeated watching and learning these little pieces come together one by one. It's really amazing. Good work. Thank you
Keep in mind, this isn't what the CAGED system is about. This lesson here is about the key-scale (layer 1)...the CAGED system is about chords (layer 2). It is very important to make this distinction 😀
T H A N K Y O U . I have SEEN something like this (keyword is seen) and was SO confused. No one explained it so that I could understand. AND NOW FINALLY YOU SHOWED ME. The fact that you showed that its three different patterns made it make so much more sense to me. You sir are now my favorite guitar teacher out there.
Hello, I can not thank you enough for the roadmap, I was at that level trying to figure it out how to play from fret #1 all the way to fret #22 or #24. God bless you and your family. Happy 2023. They do make sense to me 100%. 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑.
First video I found of yours on UA-cam, and probably one of the most beneficial to my understanding of the guitar. I always had to look at scales in tablature because I never understood where to begin the scale on those diagrams...I’m self taught by the way. When you look at those diagrams it looks like every note on the fret board practically has a dot on it, but understanding where and how to start the scale suddenly puts everything in the sharp focus.
Great Lesson, Brain! I finally got it. This makes much more sense. Will need to practice this a couple of times to make it sink in. Although your demos of how the patterns work are useful. It would be good if you could provide a more musical example of how they are applied in a solo or a song. This would give me some direction on how to apply this lesson further. Thank you 🙏👍👍👍🦘
Glad you liked the vid 😁. I have a bunch of videos where I give demos of playing within the diatonic key-scale. Here's 2 of them right here: "Minor lick" examples: ua-cam.com/video/4i9je3-vP6U/v-deo.html "Major lick" examples: ua-cam.com/video/EWGJ1locyQA/v-deo.html
Thank you for the lesson. In essence, once you see that the scale patterns contain overlapping sections it becomes much easier to play over the fret board by just learning the distinct patterns. Awesome.
When I was learning back as a teen in the early 80s, I discovered a similar method. Mine uses pentatonic box one at then 5th, 10th, and 12th (or at the open sting position). Then, I learned what the "missing" notes were at each position. There are overlaps in the 10th and 12th fret positions. but it is so easy to visualize later. Also, I had never heard of any 3 note per string system, but that was what I discovered to smoothly get from the 5th fret to the 10th fret. A few years later, I discovered modes, so I labeled the three positions the Aeolian Box, Dorian Box, and Phrygian Box. It was an easy way to see the three relative major/minor modes. Then 20 years later I discovered the 3 note per string, CAGED, 7 position, and the 4 other pentatonic. All thanks to the internet, because I am completely self taught.
You have some great lessons. I’ve been playing for a while, but I’ve never really concentrated on single note lines until fairly recently. Your lessons are really helpful - now that I’m ready to get them.
I learned a whole lot from you and got lots of questions answered by your explaining!! My mind just keeps getting clicked. Best guitar teacher I’ve see. Truly amazing!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍!!!!!
great lesson Brian thank you. I now fully understand the relationship between scales and keys and how to solo. Everybody tells you to learn scales but not what to do with them. i can also see the relationship between the modes now and the scales and the sound.

Thank you so so much Brian. I have learned all the patterns in major and minor but didn’t really understand how to apply and link them. You have completely demystified this for me and are an amazing teacher. Thank you very much. Kevin
What people told you about the upside down diagrams is that they are indeed upside down. He probably has the same problem as me, i cant followin real time because, as you shown, you have to flip your guitar to match the diagram, where what we need to read in real time is a mirror image of the fretboard, where the low E string is at the top left. For instance @5:51, we are trying to find C on the 6th string, your video shows you have to search on the top part of the guitar, on the 8th fret, but on the diagram we are looking down. Dont flip the guitar 180 vertical to match the diagram, instead put the diagram as if you were facing away from the camera, top to bottom EADGBE. I know thats the convention, but probably is why many players to be quit, we can only chain 1-3 notes in real time because we have to flip the damm thing in our head first. Still, good video, just have to pause a shit lod of times to follow.
Thanks Brian for such a valuable lesson, after seeing so many vids on U tube, this lesson has just opened the fretboard for me. Much appreciated... God bless 🙏
It is great to see how different people see the fretboard. Most of us self taught guitar players of my generation started with the minor pentatonic and to be honest I was stuck there for years. Great vid wish I was shown this so long before I actually twigged. Thanks
Year's I was playing scales without know someone stick name to them, and that was way before any video could come to my way back at 90s, it was just there when you practice and play, you find things that make any sense. And for me the fun part... I started to play again now, and find those Penta scales was used at other side on earth.
@@hideentity1518 Yep that's playing by feel. Nothing wrong with it either. Look at Django Rienhart for example. One of the greatest gypsy jazz players ever known. And most of his stuff he used 2 fingers due to an injury.
Another clear and concise lesson, its all getting clearer with practice and your lessons ! Saw a cool little video from an Ausie bass player explaining how to find the groupings of notes of any scale. Major or minor scale off of low E and A string. How after finding the root of a major scale on low E string, the MAJOR notes of the scale are clustered together, root on low e, then up on A string opposite root is the 4th and two frets up is the 5th of the scale. Then from the root on E, down 4 frets is the same pattern locating the MINOR, as well as the diminished note. It was called"Secret fingerboard pattern that'll change everything (And its easy)" . It was cool and worked for major and minor scales.... Well I got rambling on but you might want to check it out.. And thanks again for an awesome lesson ! Mike from Boston
Yes, adding the 4 and the 7 makes a 4 note cluster around the roots and if you account for the cliff between the 2 and 3 string and the e strings being the same adds, this adds nicely to the pentatonic boxes. Nicely, the root is always in the southwest corner of the cluster.
