@@bethk.3340I'm a huge fan of the play area and hot functional all the storage and spaces are, but honestly the feeling of the room! It was not a spot I wanted to spend a lot of time in before, and now I feel so calm and happy in the room!!
Also, no windows? No natural sunlight? That's so sad and I can imagine that it's hard to keep you mood balanced in a room with only artificial lighting 😒 The girls made the best of it, i like the new classroom a lot.
on the one hand, yes, on the other: my elementary classrooms were just wooden desks, wooden chairs, and a few wooden cupboards. Yes, the alphabet and some such posters were put up, too. But we didn't have any specific corners for reading, chilling, or anything. I think if we could merge both worlds, that could be fun!
I'm german and i don't exactly get, why you would need to decorate a classroom? In the schools i know or german schools in general, it's just not common to change them so much. I went to plain classrooms, but it didn't bothered me. It didn't cross my mind, that you would have to alter them 🤷♀️
Classrooms without natural light shouldn’t even be allowed imo! Natural light is essential to our hormonal production. It is detrimental to mental health to stay hours every day of the week without natural light. It also affects our sleep rhythm, energy, ability to concentrate, attention, etc. Great to see you guys put a lot of effort into making this room brighter and more colorful! 😊
I’m just starting my third year in a windowless basement classroom… let me tell you, it is DEPRESSING going to work when it’s dark and leaving when the sun is set so I see zero sunlight all day 😭
@@eyrar99 I'm sorry you're in this situation. It is depressing indeed, medical studies show that the lack of natural light is correlated to depression and su*c*dal thoughts. Whatever research you did was amazing. The different zones are clearly identified while being stylish. There is playful color without being too visually overstimulating. You made everything easily simple and accessible for seamless independence for the kiddos. The calm space is perfect and will be so important to the kids that use it! GREAT JOB!

It's so sad that that is even needed. It's one of those stories that seems wholesome on the surface, but when you think about it it shows how broken the system is. I'm glad that there are so many teachers who want the best for their students and do all they can to make their classrooms a nice place to be in, but it shouldn't be their jobs (or their money, or things), it should be something the schools/government does.
Being a special needs teacher is difficult. i struggled in school with autism and had some really great special needs teachers. However the classroom isn't very sensory friendly. y'all made this classroom to be just that. Children who need the extra time and care to learn don't always get that when there are multiple students learning at different paces. Such a good thing and I'm sure the children appreciate it too.
@@nunyabusiness164 agreed some better white lighting would make it a lot brighter. Fluorescent light is always so harsh and its just what every standard classroom has available though as easy to clean and replace. The LED lights though make up for that as ita colorful and bright.
I was a little concerned about the patchwork wall, patterns like that are generally considered to be a no no when working with autistic kids. But it looks so cool I can't be mad about it...
As a person on the autism spectrum, I really appreciate the calm space in the corner. It’s great that you’re recognizing the sensory needs of neurodivergent students! I would have loved that as a student and I think Mrs. Hardy’s students will too! I really love your series of going to places that usually don't have the budget to really get designers, like schools, and shelters, and community centers. I think those places especially need to be a comforting place for the people who are there, but most often they are very clinical and cold. Not the fault of anyone, it's so hard to make a place warm and inviting, while also being able to clean it and often these places are in office like spaces, because they are also a workplace. So you making those places look comfortable and still usable is really important. People deserve nice places to be in, not just at home. :)
As a retired teacher I am so thrilled to see you doing something so wonderful for a fellow teacher. You've made the learning environment so cozy and cute. The kids will love it!
You guys - that reading corner is MAGICAL! What a fantastic makeover ❤. It is so meaningful to watch these makeovers for such deserving recipients. Those kids will feel so safe and at home in this cozy classroom!

Really curious what that fund from Rhett and Link will go towards as well. So excited for the future of TSG and just wanted to let you know all of you rock!!❤
I think it's important to have both bright, stimulating areas + darker, less stimulating areas (like the calm corner) in a classroom when there are kids on the spectrum. People on the spectrum often feel stressed by too much artificial lighting in a room. I think you guys did a good job.
