As someone who is studying Kanji every day, seeing Ai-chan struggle with Kanji makes the Kanji not seem as scary anymore. Haha 僕は毎日のように漢字を勉強しているけど、アイちゃんでも漢字を間違えることをみるとちょっと安心してなってきた。
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Ai-chan for being always 3D, and a good one at that with all the nice crisp facial and motion tracking, backed up by the consistent subtitle gods, and last but not least consistent content. Stay OG, and U dropped this, sub gods 👑
Aah yes, kanji: All the most confusing elements of hieroglyphics and cuneiform that turn Japanese from a mostly phonetic language into a very weird game of memorization.
Unlike English the way kanji are used follows some logic most of the time where in English it's just a random string of roman characters for most words and it's not phonetic.
@@ザウアークラウトマン That's also true, If hard part of Japanese is those Kanji, English's hard part is that spelling don't quite match the pronunciation, one vowels can produce so many sounds, and there's no clear indicator when to use which sound, Our frequent exposure to it make it seem easier than it really is
[EN Summary] Ai-chan was annoyed that people were playing down her ranking as the smartest in the VakaTuber [A mix of baka or stupid and VTuber] stream that Animare's Inaba Haneru did a while back. She plans to prove to everyone how smart she is. To do so she'll be taking a kanji test. The Japanese Ministry of Education has a standard called the 常用漢字(jyouyoukanji) or general use kanji which currently amounts to 2136 compared to the overwhelming amount of actual kanji. This is why even native Japanese speakers have tests... The one presented here are about elementary school - high school level. She plans on changing her twitter name based on the results [which ended up as ポンコツAI/Clumsy AI, or 4~5 correct] . I must say her writing is pretty clean if nothing else. The first is 空気を読む(kuuki wo yomu) which is literally "reading the air" or knowing when it's maybe not the right time to take a certain action. Next is 夜空に光る星(yozora ni hikaru hoshi) or "A shinning star in the night sky". She kind of has trouble figuring this one out. Next is 九九を暗記する(kuku wo anki suru) or "memorize the multiplication table". At first like some kind of chuu-ni she thinks it's 暗気(ki) which would be something like darkness power. Then she realizes it's 記(ki) that's part of 記憶(kioku) or memory. Speaking of memory it seems Ai-chan's memory is broken so she moves on. Next is チームに加わる (chi-mu ni kuwawaru) or "adding to the team". She for some reason guesses 久 which has a not so commonly used "ku" reading and is interestingly the base kanji for the katakana ku ク. Leaving her confusing answer she moves on to 人工衛星(jinkou eisei) or artificial satellite. After thinking she's cleaver she mistakenly puts 生(sei), potentially thinking it's 衛生(eisei) meaning hygiene and having the exact same reading as the correct answer. Now back to 暗記(anki) attempt. Even though she was on the right track she decides to go back to her chuu-ni and pick 暗気(anki). Next set up we have 誤った字を書く (ayamatta ji wo kaku) or "write an incorrect character". She knows the kanji but can't remember how to write it [fairly common as a lot of Japanese people use IMEs to input on their mobile device/PC]. After a few attempts she decides to move on for now. Next is 凹凸が激しい道路 (outotu ga hageshii douro) or "a very bumpy road". Ai-chan claims it's easy but... she reverses the kanji order. Next up is 侯爵の位(kousyaku no kurai) or "rank of the marquis". This assumes the European meaning is used here, as China and Japan have their own nobility system with the same names used. The system has 5 ranks, which 侯爵 is the second one. Ai-chan appears to think it's some obscure writing of 百(hyaku) or 100 [?????]. Moving on we have 稚拙な文章(chisetsuna bunsyou) or "unskilled grammar". Ai-chan thinks the kanji reads "youchi" which is actually 幼稚 (infancy/childish). Technically a child's grammar wouldn't be that skilled so I guess...? Even staff-san is really confused at this point. Last is 市井の人(shisei no hito) or "townspeople". Ai-chan is trying to think on the pronunciation as 市井 can be either "shisei" or "ichii". Putting something down she goes back to the 誤った kanji for another attempt, giving her final answer. For the results, the first two are correct, and despite her being way off on 暗記(anki) she gives herself a good score because it looks cute [except it's chuu-ni]. Next is the way off 加わる(kuwawaru) to which even staff-san doesn't know how she got there. Next up she realizes it was 人工衛星(jinkoueisei) and not 人工衛生(same reading). Though Ai-chan claims that if you add a good job flower it will be the correct 星 for some reason. The next one she got the kanji right, but pulled out an extra hiragana that was supposed to be part of the kanji reading [誤(ayama)った not 誤(aya)ま(ma)った]. But oh well good job flower. Now she realizes the kanji for 凹凸(outotu) was in reverse. Not wanting to accept this she rages and gives herself a good job flower. Next one Ai-chan realizes her reading was off and gives it a triangle (staff comments it should be an X, which is used to indicate something is incorrect). Same thing, Ai-chan again realizing she was **way** off on her reading. For some reason though it's acceptable for a 5 year old [her age in debut]. For the last one Ai-chan wants to know why 市井(shisei) is read that way, as it's kind of a one off rule (it's normally ichii in the standalone form). So with that her score puts her with the ポンコツAI (clumsy AI) rank.
I could've read this comment without watching the video and I still would have gotten the vibe of it as I can totally picture AI chan doing and saying the things you mention here. Thanks for your hard work translating and giving insights on the kanji's meanings and uses :)
I can hear the equivalent of King of the Hill's Hank Hill based from this right now - "You can't read Japanese Kanji? AI-Chan, YOU ARE Japanese!" Nice clip, btw.
That "FAKKYUUU!!!" at the end was by far the best part of the entire video! I laughed my ass my off at that! X'D The fact that it totally took me by surprise made it so much better! XD
As a Chinese, I don't feel so painful in learning Japanese kanji, but really frustrated with those kanjis pronouncing completely differently in Chinese. And I'm really glad to see Ai-chan correctly wrote every kanji she knew, super Ai lol

And arguably the weirdest part is that One Kanji can have so many readings...
