Perth has really come a long way since 1990 - I was 15 when this was filmed and remember everything in the video exactly as it was back then. How did the world get to be such a colossal nightmare 30 years later?
Equality, We emigrated to Perth in 1970. We could leave the house and car unlocked . We could walk around and not worry about anything. Prices were good , a house in a good area $ 14000 to $ 20000. What went wrong? Simple. People like us immigrants but black ones. That is what has changed. Even the Aboriginals have noticed.
I was 8 years old back then . Now i am 36 . This really brings back fond memories. I can not believe how quiet it was back then . What a gem of a home video .
Man I grew up on the streets of Perth in the 1990s, man seeing this has bought back so many memories. The video arcade “Orbit” on Barrack Street that was where I used to play video games with my childhood friends. I was a very shy, introspective child who had seen a lot of things about the realities of life. At the time I had been about nine years old. I used to do a lot of things with my mother as well. Seeing this video had night back a lot of memories, thank you heaps for posting it. I really do wish that “time travel” was real wouldn’t it be wonderful if we can somehow, someway travel back in time? Imagine all the mistakes that we have made in our lives and having the opportunity from what we know now being able to stop that from happening, (it may create a paradoxical effect) but really maybe if there was some way that we can just simply “go back” and explore our lives more wouldn’t that be a wonderful opportunity? It is a pity though that it is just in the realms of science fiction (maybe for now) but really being able to see our past lives again would definitely be a wonderful experience and being able to warn our younger selves to hopefully be able to make better decisions. Oh well, it is just a dream. Thank you heaps for this form of “time travel” even if it is only in this video clip.
I arrrived in Perth on Aug 1st 1990 and was there for 10 years...happiest years ogf my life, it was a GREAT city and really affordable and safe....I LOVED IT...
This is magical. I love how peaceful it all looks -- it's like a ghost town. I lived in Perth from 1992-1998 as a teenager so this is slightly before my time, but every street is instantly familiar. Way more than it looks these days anyway. Thanks for filming it back in the day -- I took it for granted, hated it even. It's like a dream world now, though, looking back.
Awesome video! I remember so much of this from Perth in 1990. Brings back a lot of memories. It’s awesome too that you managed to capture so much footage without people in it. Love it.
Great video. Lived and worked out in Perth in the noughties. Seems like a different person's life. At 7am on way to work, I used to get called a 'white c**t' at the train station by the locals, who'd spend their day drinking and chasing the transit police along William Street. Used to love walking laps of the city, running up and down Jacob's Ladder and hanging out in the Little Creatures brewery.
This is great. I'm having flashbacks of King Kongs on the corner of William and Murray Street. Also, I miss the cinemas in the city more than anything!
Are they all gone? Haven't been to the cbd apart from gigs here and there in years. I bumped into 3 of the guys from the band Pantera in that King Kong store...lol Two of them are now dead tho.
So much of childhood was spent visiting the city. Absolutely loved it. Buying cool pants at Renoirs, movies at Cinema City, saw Reservoir Dogs at the cinemas in the Entertainment Centre, books and games from White Dwarf, the bookshop under the horseshoe bridge, games from Tactics, arcade games Orbit or Timezone, spending HOURS in 48 Records or Da Da's, the old comic shop downstairs heading up towards Fast Eddies, a heavy metal music store upstairs in a small arcade no longer there, Primal piercing, my 18th birthday at Charlies Tavern on the corner, cocktails at Mangoes with the waitresses in blue lycra... It was a great childhood.
wow, forgot so much. The R&I tower, the old Irish pub next to the Wentworth plaza etc and the sheer lack of people in the city (even if it was a sunday)
Great video! I was born in 1986 so this brings back fond if sometimes vague memories of Perth in the 90s. I vaguely remember Central Park still being built, interesting to see what changed and what stayed the same. Perth really was a ghost town on Sunday back then - still kind of is on Sunday morning but much busier now haha. Check out my recent vids for a comparison.
When there were still some daylight hours when no one was around. And the city was a place you actually wanted to go or at least not make every effort to avoid.
Thank you so much, brings back a lot of memories 🙂. This looks like normal quiet city days around new years time i still remember how quiet it was on sundays in gpo. its like lock down days of covid
Great video! I'm glad you didn't tape over them! Its back when we were introduced to cheap Chinese goods from King Kong's! I couldn't believe how cheap they were selling scissors for until I used them and they snapped straight away. Best of all no tramps. Sunday was for resting, not driving. Practically no cars on the road on a Sunday! Cheers for the memories.
I used to catch the route 43 to Maylands from that stop opposite the town hall back then and remember all this. Now I live outside Melbourne and I’m amazed by the lack of people about the place 😂….Thanks for the trip down memory lane. What happened to the aspect ratio??
Paul thank you for this. 1990 was when i finished building my 1st home and i met my wife. Very strong nostalgic feelings from looking at this video. What hardware did you record this on as my memory is VHS recorders were still insanely expensive in 1990. I look forrward to watching your yanchep marine park video next.
288 lines of resolution in the PAL VHS and VHS-C format. TV transmissions were twice that so whenever you recorded anything you would lose half of the detail. S-VHS came out and bumped up the lines of resolution to 400 which was a big improvement but the cameras/vcr and tapes were more expensive.
If you ‘subscribe’ you’ll be able to see a number of videos I shot around Perth over those years, including things like ATLANTIS MARINE PARK and PIONEER WORLD.
Sorry, but I worked in Perth CBD 1983 - 1995. Nothing against it, but I’m NEVER going back. Enough is enough - too old now, & very happily so ..... ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️. (edit). BTW I’m still working (2021) , but in the suburbs 😁😁😁😁😁

social media, immigration, silly azz politics, covid to name a few lol... the first 3 especially...
Pretty sure you there is more positives you can find.

Quieter...and better
I think it’s tragic what they’ve done to Perth, I remember it from the 70s when it had character 😢😢😢

I preferred the 90s Perth to be honest and look at Perth now. if only there's a Time Machine. call me crazy I even missed the old car exhaust smell!
It certainly brought back memories. I am amazed just how few people were around when this was filmed.

My first year in P-Town!
When I was 18 remember it well - had changed a little but not a lot
thank you for this
Interesting to see 👍🏼👍🏼
Great memories I landed in Perth 5/10/95
It was a lot better back then, we weren't always in a hurry, didn't have to worry to much about crime, they were good times.
Ah but still in a hurry compared to the 70s

The year I came. Much better back then imo.
Carillon arcade is completely empty now.
St Georges Terrace still looked really good back then.
It’s still the same old dullsville today, just packed with bogans now!
Bugger off from whence you came!!!
Wait a while over in the west love it
half of ya'll need to read the description 'shot on a QUIET SUNDAY MORNING'. If it were midday on a Monday the streets would have been packed...
Almost the same as now days but i do remember the old store, ahh how can i not forget king kong

It was initially recorded on a ( very substandard) JVC VHS-C camcorder, then copied to a standard VHS full sized tape.
288 lines of resolution in the PAL VHS and VHS-C format. TV transmissions were twice that so whenever you recorded anything you would lose half of the detail. S-VHS came out and bumped up the lines of resolution to 400 which was a big improvement but the cameras/vcr and tapes were more expensive.
i can almost taste the recession!
Marconi Union - A Temporary Life is a really good song for this
Did you shoot all this at 5 am on a Sunday morning with no one around?Loved Perth in those days.
No Sunday trading remember haha

I wonder this was Sunday.. before Sunday trading.. i miss pre Sunday trading

You sure that's not Melbourne 2021?
Man Perth was dead in the 90s or was this a Sunday
Both
Back when Perth was a friendly city.
Still is compared to every other capital city in Australia.
Still looks the same today.
I assume this was a Sunday ha ha
immigration
Perth was nicer back then.
Nah
lmao where is everyone💀
Where are all the people?
I'm guessing this was filmed in the early morning or maybe just a Sunday when nothing was open back then! It is eerily quiet and sedate
The city was dead in 90s no one around
Geoffrey Brundell This video was shot in the early hours of a Sunday morning, that’s why it was so quiet.
it looks so much like a ghost town
