Our U.S Navy ship made a port stop in Perth for 4 days in late 1986. A bunch of us wandered around. We visited a club called Mangoes one night. Met some friendly people and had a great time there.

During my apprenticeship I had to do my college in Perth (from Darwin!). 3 months a year for 3 years, 1984 to 86. Mount Lawley TAFE. I was 18. Boy, did I do some growing up and have fun. Made friends, girlfriends and just had a ball. Nightclubs like Pinochios in the city, The Generator in Morley, Bondy's Observation City in Scarborough, great memories,. And now my home. Best city in the World.

This was before my time as a 90s baby, but I love to see the history of places I know. Some buildings not there anymore, the city is much bigger now. The overall feeling to the video is amazing. It feels like it must have been a great time in the 80s. And no one with technology in their hands - a time gone by. Perth looks so bustling and active in the 80s.
Would have loved a chance to experience it - so thank you for sharing this video!

I grew up in Fremantle in the 80s and loved every minute of it.
WAFL football at South Fremantle oval on Saturday was the best times . We’d grab a handful of pass outs at the gate then go out of the ground and sell the tickets for $3 or $4 each to people coming in the game . We’d also get the footballs when they were kicked out of the ground at the northern end and sell them for $10 each . So after making approximately $60 each it was straight to Papa Luigi on Sth Terrace and play pin ball all afternoon.
Then eat pizza with the football players after the game
Ahh the good old days in Freo as a 10 year old kid.
Stay tuned for next chapter as a 17 year old boy

I like the fact that Cottesloe did not even cut the mustard on this video. Back then nobody gave two hoots about it, and the few of us that lived here left to go elsewhere for holidays making the place deserted most of the year. Even the quietest day in Cottesloe is now far more popular than busiest day back then. How I used to love this city with a million, now 3 million and bursting at the seems with sociopathic politicians, developers and all sorts of narcissists destroying every square centimeter of what was such a beautiful and remote place to live. Now the same rat race as all other capital cities.

The people who flattened Boans to replace it with the shopping fortress that's there now were criminals. They didn't even justify it by building something bigger. Just cut the station off from the city with service portals and offered a bridge in place to funnel transit and city goers into their ugly building.

By 1986 the downward direction of the desirability of Western Australia, and Perth/Fremantle in particular, as a place to avoid 'the madding crowd' was well under way.
As a consequence, my family and I went South to more pleasant environments.
Presently, Perth is one of those places which I am happy to have no need to visit.

Perth was a back water then due to its crippling isolation and high cost of getting there. The Hay Street Mall seemed lively with people of all ages. Not now it's very much deserted with small shops closing down one after another. The producer had difficulties filling in the 21 minutes and resorted to shots of feeding birds. The quality of this upload is not good. Seen better from the 1950s.

This shows great insight into how little people knew about Rottnest's history before and after the colonisation of WA.
