The Cruel Death of Thief

Thief may not be totally 100% dead, but it'll be a dog's age before we see another game.
The series has an interesting history wherein the threads of budding western PC development and the immersive sim genre intertwine. So instead of covering that in detail I'm doing a game review because that's what I always do. We're covering the whole thing, from the early days of Thief: The Dark Project/Gold, and Thief 2: The Metal Age, to Deadly Shadows and the dreaded Thourf.
Anyway, please enjoy this experiential tale of woe and stealth gameplay. You Dishonored mads ain't slick, I saw what you said, and I'm telling my mom on you.

I do one-shot reviews too! • FANTASY FOR CHADS - Dr...
The devs for Thi4f actually live-streamed themselves playing Thief Gold near the end of development... for the first time. They're going through it like "Wow, our Garrett talks a lot more!" and marveling at how different the two games play. Which is just... It's unsurprising, but it still hurts
What
Don't you have to play the game to know what it is
@@Christian-gr3gu Thi4f has a passing similarity to the 3rd game, Deadly Shadows, so I think most people, myself included, assume they just played a bit of that one and ignored the rest of the games
Where can I find this video
@@RaskolnikovGaming I tried finding it again a little while ago, I'm not sure it's available anymore. It likely wasn't saved
“Sometimes violence is necessary.”
Expert difficulty: “we don’t do that here.”
Fun Fact tho, you could kill people with Frogbeasts on the higher difficulties and not fail the mission. Prolly cuz the game doesn't take into account that the frogbeast was a tool deployed by you, and just assumed it was another mob.
“Here’s the grave, let’s start digging.” Holy....
And sodomize the body.
One of the best lines I've heard in a while 😂
Strongman Cornman STOP, every time I read a comment like this, it is said in the video at that EXACT MOMENT. I don't want to beleive it!

I want Thief to come back, but I guess Dishonored exists, in the same way that I can play Prey if I want a more modern System Shock.
Arkane is a gift from God.
Thief might not be coming back, but New Blood Interactive is making “Gloomwood”. It’s very inspired by Thief. Heard about it?
@@ursoanonimo8398 Played the demo, shaping up to be real good
Except Dishonored is a pretty bad stealth game compared to Thief, and Prey isn’t a good Action RPG compared to System Shock
@@JXZX1 Dishonored was never meant to be a true stealth game, it focused more on creativity and flexibility in terms of its usage of overlapping powers and amazingly fluid gameplay. Prey ( 2017 ) on the other hand was just a fantastic System Shock'esqe game, obviously not everything can be put into Prey ( 2017 ) due to it's premise and it's focused target audience. It caters to both Immersive sim gamers and casual gamers. And I think the influence can certainly be seen in Arkane's games due some of its staff coming from the Looking Glass studio itself.
Thief is not dead. People are still making fan missions for it. Just this year, the Thief 2 20th anniversary contest missions released and most are really good. There are over 1000 fan missions out there and some are absolutely amazing, better than the original missions even.
Do you have any recommendations?
@@3333218 Too many, actually. There are a bunch of absolute classics like Rowena's Curse, The Seven Sisters, Ominous Bequest, Broken Triad. Those are all must plays. If you like exploring huge cityscapes, play anything made by skacky (especially Endless Rain) and Melan (especially Disorientation). If you like tombs, play Unexpected Detour by DarkMax. If you like the surreal missions like Constantine's manor, play Gems of Provenance by stinkykitty and Ascend the Dim Valley by Dirk Bogan.
@@JarlFrank Thank you!!!
Thief is dead in the tripleA space like deus ex.
@@JarlFrank Dude thank you for this haha
Fun fact, Karras is voiced by Stephen Russel, the same guy who voiced Garret.
Seriously, that dude gets around.
I thought he was voiced by Stitch

He also voiced corvo in D2
You're just now figuring out that Dishonored lifted heavily from Thief? There's an entire conversation in Dishonored that's quoted almost verbatim from Thief 1's training mission. Garrett and Corvo are even voiced by the same guy.
At least one of the Dishonored devs has been very active in the Thief community.
Arkanes games are all pretty much homages to the old immersive sims from the 90s though aren't they? Particularly Looking Glass's. Dishonored is a blatant homage to thief with more freedom to play how you want ala Deus Ex, with Dishonoureds lead designer being the lead designer of Deus Ex 1 and 2 and a self professed fan of Looking Glass studios. They also developed Arx Fatalis, which was heavily inspired by Ultima Underworld, and Arkane founder Rafael Contantonios final game before he left the company was Prey, which was a massive homage to the System Shock games. Immersive sims are pretty much all they do and with Randy Smith now running their Austin office himself I would expect that to continue
This made installing moving and installing my new dryer much more enjoyable. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. Thanks KBash
Not even a joke, I somehow often find myself playing a kbash video while doing some kind of work. Right now it's getting ready for my meetings

It definitely has something to do with his commentary being super analytic that you don't always need a visual aid to understand exactly what he is talking about. Most critiques really don't land the way his do for me.
@@XannnyTanner yeah, and he could talk about the game in depth without it being boring. That's why i think his content is good for "background noise" that's still engaging
@@a_san_t for sure, though his editing is always worth a rewatch when you arent busy. He has put in work and the improvements in his editing show.
Thourf was a fundamentally terrible idea because Deadly Shadows gave us a perfect ending for Thief's plot. You might as well make a sequel to Return of the Jedi while you're at it. Good thing nobody could possibly be stupid enough to do that.
i must admit, hearing the new installment being called "Thourf" made me laugh so hard. Because it's so incredibly fitting.
I will admit that I like the newest Thief game, but I’ll also acknowledge that it’s probably because I never played the original trilogy.
Do yourself a favor and play Thief 2 right now!!
TCMOREIRA okay, I’ll check Steam.
It's a real shame this franchise couldn't steal some success in the mainstream media...
Puns,quips And JOKES
Stealth game will rarely become mainstream success sadly.
Mainstream gamers don't have patience.
I mean there's Metal Gear and Splinter Cell
@@zangoon4546 they might as well be call of duty compared to something like the thief trilogy
If you enjoy the OG thief games, I HIGHLY recommend the dark mod. It's a free standalone spiritual successor to thief made in id tech 4. The quality is insane.
This was a good video, but it's a shame you didn't talk about The Dark Mod at all. I'd say it would have drawn a slightly more optimistic conclusion to this video, considering it's still generating new content. It's not perfect, but it's definitely got the right spirit!
And Thief 2X!
We had so much hype and hope, I remember back in the days we were already camping the forums with theories of what the story would be about... Only to have our hearts crushed. Right when they said reboot as it was the start of the trend with Tomb Raider, I knew they were going to mess up.
Thief setting and story didn't need a reboot, it was and still is good. Tomb Raider barely had a story, each game is a story of its own while the original Thief's trilogy was a story told as the years passed.
Dishonored is nice, but I do heavily miss Garrett and the Thief setting. I have no idea what Square Enix will do with it if not just placing it in a dark cave instead of selling it to passionate folks... Even indie devs can do wonders nowadays.
Square Enix has no right to hold Theif and Legacy of Kain captive! They wouldn't even know what to do with them.
I wasn't in those forums oh good person!
Can you share what people thought the story would be about?
This comment aged like a bag of dicks. The franchise is being passed to some crass indie noobs who will shit on it.
Thief 3 adding a 3rd person camera really does seem like it would undermine a lot about Thief. As me and Lambhoot have argued, one of the best ways to create tension is to remove information from the player. If the player can just peek around a corner without moving their character around said corner, then a lot of the tension is undermined. In the original game, peeking around the corner was interesting because you had no idea what could be around the corner, and getting that information would usually endanger your character
100% agree.
that was around the time that more and more games were made for consoles first and it's been a slow trod to get quality AAA games that don't treat their players like morons.
It’s really disappointing that graphics are all that seem to really matter nowadays...almost seems like gameplay/lore/storyline take a backseat. Maybe that’s just how I feel though, oh well.
Just avoid the same, tired AAA titles and try to give some indie games a chance. Those are usually made because people have an idea or a will to make them. AAAs exist to appease shareholders.
If you show indie devs love now, they may blossom into AAA trashmills of their own one day.
I love how Fable1 town music plays when you start talking about Thief 4
Clearly, you literally never heard of the French Revolution.
Crashie-J But they where dirty loyalist
@Crashie-J I don't remember any books telling me all the loyalists "just left" and the civil war happend roughly 70 years after the revolution, pretty much all loyalists would be dead unless people decided after the fact to support Britian. So spread your loyalist mumbo jumbo elsewhere
The French revolution was a rapid succession of multiple parties with different ideas gaining and losing power ultimately leading to the consulate and empire. The revolution is a lot more complex than you want to make it to be.
@@emperorgameling5064 My favorite part was where the peasants/lower class started killing children for fun and then killing each other when someone asked "Is'n't killing children kinda messed up?"

I have all the Thief games still to this day and I'm already playing the latest fan missions that come out periodically. This franchise is a masterpiece! I love playing these games!
I always forget how much it pains me to see anybody play Thief in 3rd person.
Anyhow I highly recommend the Dark Mod to any former taffers. It's a free standalone conversion of Doom 3 into an updated Thief with some amazing fan made levels/campaigns.
The Dark Mod is a standalone mod that is a wonderful remake of the Thief games, with tons of community made maps and stories. It really needs more love too. It takes everything that's good from all the original thief games. Incredibly immersive and good sound design and ambience and lighting.

This channel is criminally underrated
Wait, what did Thief get wrong about revolutions? Or did I misunderstand the joke?
I don’t know if you played it on release but Thief 3’s biggest problem was it’s loading screens and small maps that was limited by the engine they used. Deus Ex Invisible War ran into the exact same problem.
The biggest problem with Erin from Thief 4, I think, is that she's constantly saying things just to say them and sound dramatic, whether or not they actually make any sense. The most distracting one for me was when she told Garrett to find the asylum she was kept at, so he does, only for her to jump-scare him at the door and say that he "shouldn't be there". Also blaming him for her almost-death when it was so obviously her fault.
Robbing the Cradle was one of the best levels of any video game I have ever played. Thief: Deadly Shadows truly is a gem worth stealing.
Not that I stole my digital copy, of course.

"Please read any book" Because historically extremist revolutionaries created utopia after they forced their way into power. We all know this, silly devs.
29:20 "The extremist revolutionary faction... overturns the guards and unironically become just as bad. Thank you for your ahistorical representation of revolution, protesting, and class division. Please read any book."
Apparently, you skipped the books on the French Revolution.
You know, the one where the extremist revolutionary faction overturns the government, with Robespierre at the helm, and instituted the Reign of Terror, killing tens of thousands for daring to criticize the Revolution, or even for being accused of being ant-revolutionary.
All culminating with Napoleon on the throne and even more wars for France.
Ahistorical, indeed.
I hate the game as much as the next guy but if you're gonna criticize it for something, at least do it for something worthwhile.
Oof
Well, at least we have Gloomwood coming soon lol
Thief 1 and 2 is a different experience if ran on todays machines from when it was released. If you still have an old enough PC with a SBLIVE! or a Aureal card in Quad Channel Output mode. It's an experience you can't get today thanks to the hardware accelerated 3d sound. And that is due to how NERFED modern soundoutput is on Today's PC thanks to Vista\8\10. Even Ran through a wrapper like Alchemy for Creative based cards, it won't sound like it was meant to.
Yeah. I remember playing Thief with a SBLIVE! I haven't experienced anything like that after. I though it was a distorted nostalgia rose-tinted memory of mine, but now reading your comment...
You do know there are patches for thief
@@alexsm3882 you do know windows vista+ soundstack was totally destroyed by M$ and nothing sounds the same since, and even then there is a differences between VXD EAX output and later WDM within 9x. Let alone the crap output you get from VISTA\8\10. You wouldn't know that without actually experiencing it.
There are no patches or wrappers(emulators) that fix that because its not fixable, M$ saw to that.
Interesting, so things truly were better i'm not going insane
@@tek_lynx4225 you cannot seriously be saying you still use vista

ADORE this trilogy....yes, TRILOGY, I said what I said
Cry as you might, the death of Thief isn't nearly as fucking brutal as Warcraft 3 (at least you still get to play the Thief games unlike WC3 where you can never play the old version ever again...)
Shalebridge was one of the most traumatic experiences of my childhood 😂
Ah, yes, the Abortinator 9000 Sniper Rifle, now with the coat hanger attachment for extra efficiency
29:21 Yeah, it was really inaccurate, the new revolutionary guards didn't commit any genocide :/
I really hate the fact that Eidos Montreal / Square Enix is holding on to this franchise and has done nothing with it after that disappointing Thief reboot. Maybe they should sell it to another developer that understands this game as a hardcore fan and really wants to do this game some justice?
As someone who discovered the series through Deadly Shadows, I quite enjoy Thief4/reboot.
I don't enjoy the plot/premise changes, or the new personality on Garrett.
But the gameplay feels like the natural evolution of Thief 3.
Just turn off the on screen waypoint markers.... too bad it doesn't have hand drawn maps like the old ones...
Yeah, i love the game, i think it has many good things in it that people are mindlessly hating because it has some bad plot or basically nothing to do with the older games
@@JumalaPlays there's a lot of things like that in the world.
The Star Wars prequels are a good example of this.
Darksector and Legendary are good examples of this.
Society's hivemind is generally just dumb.
@@Coreisus yeah, i'm actually glad to see that the game isn't reviewed badly on steam, it's got like 75% good reviews and i think it deserved that, but anywhere outside of steam you just see people taking a fat shit on the game.
Why people can't just like all the thief games is beyond my understanding
I noticed the WoW music when mentioning 2004 release....
I could recognize those violins anywhere.
Thief seems like the kind of world and setting I would love and immerse myself in... if I wasn't heinously awful at first person stealth.
Thief 2 was medieval MGS lmao
And Thief 1 was medieval MGS 2.
It was better than MGS
The french revolutionaries are unironically worse then what they overthrew. So yeah I agree, being only just as bad is pretty a-historical.
Executing a thousand aristocrats and oligarchs is worse than letting a million of your citizens starve to death while you spend half the national budget on a giant palace with no toilets? People really are bad at weighing the impact of stochastic, systematic violence vs. direct physical violence.
Ngl, I'm surprised you didn't mention how the game just doesn't work on ps3. Like i don't know if it just me, but the right trigger doesn't work when playing thief and only thief
The only problem I encountered with the PS3 version is the AI breaking in a mission and standing in place
Woah! A K Bash video on my birthday? What a nice present!
I’ve only played Thourf when it was free on PSN, not really knowing about the first 3... But this video makes me wanna try them! Another great video man, keep it up!!

Cool video, never was a fan of this game, but ironically i love steaalth games, i just can't get into this world aesthetics. it's a me problem, but some games of the same genre i have no problems with. it's weird.
Anyway try Jagged Alliance 2 please.
Still The best TBT game ever. Even after an endless lineup of JRPG's & RPG's.
Should have continued/improved DarkEngine instead of switching over to UT engine for Thief3.
DarkEngine is what makes Thief1/2 so great. Good directional sound effects, precise snappy fast engine, low polygon count with rather good textures for it's time. And that great selected object highlighting. For some reason, UT engine and to some extend, DarkMod doesn't give the same feeling, as old DarkEngine.
And even System Shock 2 looks totally different, although both use same engine.
Thief4 is utter garbage!
Honesty Thief 2 has always been my favourite games, and I don't think it will ever change
Dishonored is nowhere near Thief in terms of mechanics. Yeah you can blink and sh*t but stealth is painfull no shadows/sound (In Thief you can listen through doors!) just crouch to stealth. About combat in Thief you are playing thief not skeletor I can shoot tornadoes from my hands. It is baffling that 20 years and no one except Splinter cell RIP have tried to go near this level of simulation. In Thief ghosting is fun, in Dishnored it is punishing and half baked more frustrating than fun.
Another thing that people miss as a problem with this abomination is the whole premise of the story. In this one, the guy they call Garrett is getting involved in some kind of political struggle that involves a virus no one cares about and a glowing mcguffin that no one is given a reason to care about. The real Garrett couldn't care less about the politics of anything, even if it was two supernatural factions trying to destroy the world, he just cared about the next payday or confronting someone who wanted to kill him.
In short, the three thief games had a very strong undertone of supernatural eeriness to them and the stakes were "If you don't do something Garrett, hundreds or thousands of people are going to die and the city (maybe the world) will be destroyed or enslaved), in this one it's "yeah, could you do this?" "why?" "Umm, because the script says?" "okay". Not compelling, not in the least.
Awesome video, I'm a big fan of Thief 1+2 and really enjoyed your breakdown of the franchise's collapse. Very well-written and funny with great delivery, too. Will definitely be subscribing and checking out your other videos!
this time I was prepared, and started the video on mute, effectively avoiding the intro ear rape. I'm proud of myself.
Aside from that, great content, as always.
Weakling.
The bonking montage was angelic
I loved Thief. It was a fun sneak game and just because it doesn't coaling with the previous games doesn't mean it cant be a good standalone game. I think you compare it to the older games too much
Comment for that UA-cam algorithm.
Just curious how old are yall Thief 2 fans who still play Thief 2 right now?
try playing the dark mod
I think I heard somewhere that Arkane was an Obsidian-Outer Worlds story, former thief devs moved to work on Dishonored? but dont quote me
Most of them are from looking glass studios. They actually reference it in prey 2017 where one of the big tec used is called looking glass.
They're basically a studio devoted to developing immersive sims like the ones Looking Glass made in the 90s, and they're headed up by Randy Smith who was the lead designer on Deus Ex.
I dont really know why fans tend to separate deadly shadows so much from the first two because it was directed my Randy Smith who was one of key level designers for the first 2 games at looking glass. There were numerous other people from thief 1 and 2 involved as well who had moved to ion storm when looking glass closed. Its not like it's a sequel without the involvement on the original team, and Ion Storm had a connection to LG anyway through Warren Spector, who had worked somewhat on the original Thief - which is what prompted him to create Deus Ex in the first place as he wanted to develop an immersive sim that gave you more play style options.
Ion Storm just became the new home for thief that's all. And I think it a absolutely stands side by side with the original two games, especially it you play using the third 3 gold mod that eliminates the losding screens in the levels so that its just one big map like in the first 2 games.
Thief 4 was the first in the series I played. I honestly thought it was a stand alone game because of how well it reminds you its a part of a series
Fantastic video. As an enormous Thief fan I'd say you nailed it.
I thought this video was gonna be about the Thief class in RPGs
This game should also have been released for ps1, since it has more memory storage of data to add in the game.
Time to play thief fully for the 10th time tonight

You should make a Dishonored video
I've for ten minutes left in the video runtime, but you fkn nailed it today, KBash

Just found your channel. Wow, very good video.
Nice review full of nostalgia and bias.
The game is quiet good, if you haven't played the older titles
This game series reminds me of the first Feception game by Namco, in contrast to the next two installments which is played in full display perspective instead of being played by main character's eye point of view.
I can genuinely see a sort of remake working absolute wonders. With a combo gameplay of Dishonored and Thourf, but the very likable world of the first two games and their stories. I think people would play the *shit* out of that.
I was kinda excited about it and was planning to get it but I forgot
I loved that asylum level so much. I completely agree with the digs aginst any one of these games in the series. I still loved getting that into the game.
17:25 ... What? That never happened in the first Thief games.
Didn't Ike the thief series too dark and slow. But im glad it paved the way for splinter cell
Never ever play thief on anything but expert
Thief is the only stealth game that does the whole punishing the play for killing thing right....unlike splinter cell
my dude is trying way to hard to be funny
from the gameplay i can see you have no idea how to play a stealth game
I like Thourf (didn't know this term and found it funny) and never really played the other games, only found out Thief as a series through Steam. It does feel a lot of typical AAA game, but I like what it offers, although I do agree with some points you like the rope arrow. At first I was excited with the possibilities of exploring the environment but then I notice it only worked in specific points, it was a little let down. Also I missed a little humor in the game to balanced the adult and dark things, which usually works well in the type of mood this game has. But overall I have fun with the game, I only played the tutorial of Thief Gold to see how it was but maybe I give an actual goal in the future.
What is it with 90s- early 2000s pc games having really bad animations? I understand the models looking primitive, but the animation is slow, robotic and clunky. When he bonks someone with his club, it looks so slow
I know there are some exceptions btw
2020 animations are completely unrealistic though. Everyone seem acting.
Another video from my favourite UA-camr
You ever see an intro and that alone makes you click like?
You never die, you just stay standing.
I did not know the thief had a long history. Being a person that loves old games I wouldn't mind actually checking out Thief one or two.
Despite its flaws, I really loved the Thief reboot.
Every so often I just watch his videos get to the Patreons and remember oh right I'm there
20:23 ... I am way too easily amused.
Thief is one of my favorite games to exist
Never played theif, but the treatment to a beloved franchise is all too familiar.
@KBash please play Danganronpa your going to have a blast playing it and your going to have some shit you might want to talk about it!!!
You know I got the art book for this game incredibly cheap… $7...... No for real this $35 art book I got it for seven bucks.
Which I’m not complaining at all I was happy to get this so cheap. Wish the Horizon Zero Dawn, Borderlands 2, and both Bayonetta art books were that cheap second hand.
I came into this game thinking this was an original IP, I didn’t know there were PC games prior to this. As a fan of stealth games this was a little annoying to get through because it felt so linear. Not really many branching pathways to get through a room as it seems if you hugged the walls/furniture, walked on hight bookcases, or whatever else you get spotted fairly easy.
Erin wasn’t a good character. From the prologue it was pretty clear she was impulsive and irrational with something to prove to Garett. I really didn’t care about saving her. Cuz more often than not, I completely forgot that was the main objective to the story.
Just came back from my night shift and was actually looking at the cheese in the fridge when that intro hit lmao
around 3 months back i played theif 2014 for the first time and got hooked , that game is responsible for me discovering the old trilogy so i guess it serves that purpose.
Can someone explain to me how we went from simply ATTACKING an enemy with a swing of our weapon, to their back and having them fall over, to having to align ourselves at the right angle and proximity so we can choose a button on a contextual selection prompt which will play a repetitive canned animation that removes player control and camera control for like 5 seconds or even more depending on how BADASS the animator is feeling that day. I mean its bullshit and EVERY VIDEO GAME EVER since the 360 era till today does it.
pls talk about Dying Light
by the way if you ever struggle with Jagged Alliance 2, and i'm sure you will, here's a video showing someone playing it on another level.
(he is playing with one mode that adds and fixes the mechanics in the game, but still leaves the game as is, for the most part).
this is what peak performance looks like.
