Fable is that one franchise that I loved dearly, bought every game, played every DLC, etc., but it followed a pretty sharp downturn in quality over time, while its budget only inflated. It's all opinion, of course, but I'd like to share my experience with the franchise.

I played fable 1 as a kid and never even heard to Peter or any of the claims. I experienced the game innocent and in all of its beauty. I loved it very much.

I won't lie, when Fable 2 finally let's you loose in that gypsy village, the first thing I tried to do was hit a child. The disappointment of that moment set the tone for the rest of the game.
I played fable 3 first ( it came with the Xbox 360 My older brother got) I was hoping to smack some snot nosed little shits into orbit with my hammer.
But you can, you just have to turn off the safe system

Me, glitching through some stairs to get the sword of aeons at the start of the game and kicking a dude for hours to farm my strength to max in the first town: Yeees.. eeeearned.
Work smarter, not harder.
You did kick him for hours so you did earn that strength at least
Me, digging at a specific spot nearby the boasting pavilion, which caused additional NPCs to spawn, and thus amass a mob of 40+ NPCs to show off my trophies to, and max out my renown before wasp queen.

Abusing the two saving functions to get infinite silver keys. There was also a spot in one of the houses in bowerstone where you could *cough* beat your wife without killing her to farm evil points >_> at least that actually made me feel like a horrible person without being a forced option.
Graestra at least I don’t feel bad about abusing saves for silver keys since you could potentially lock yourself out of at least one of them if you don’t marry that bowerstone bitch
Great video, but I gotta disagree with what you're getting at at 6:41.
There's no reason to sneak and steal, or to buy property, or to get married, because there doesn't need to be a reason for those things. They're just things you can do if you want to, if you feel like it. Not everything "needs" a reason.
Same deal at 14:55. You don't wanna do those things. They're in the game because others DO want to do them. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding your point.

I actually like the idea of doing other things in games.
I love all 3 of these games. Sure they had there issues like any game but the combat, magic, humour, world and overall vibe of every fable game is something I've never experienced anywhere else they truly do feel magical
fable 2 was great just wish that there was a house to buy in westcliff.
You can turn Westcliff into a thriving village, if you give Bernum (I think that's his name, the inventor guy), 5000 gold before you leave for the spire to save Garth.
@Ornate Orator Pretty much lol. He will also give you 15000 when you get back from the spire, meaning there's no reason not to do it, as you gain 10000 gold, and Westcliff becomes a place that's worth while and a money maker with houses.

@@crispymattastic There are a load of buildings for shops and stuff, I thought at least one of them was a house.
I once read in a website that Westcliff was once a thriving fishing town until it was destroyed during the Citizen's Revolt against the Heroe's Guild, never fully recovering until Barnum and the Hero of Bowerstone redeveloped it. I'm not sure if this is cannon but adding more of Westcliff's history in the game would've been interesting.
I was a kid when i played the fable trilogy, and fable 3 came out around the time i was 14 or so. I loved them all, and never had any beef with any of them. Fable 3 was my favorite entry and one of my few gripes with it was the inability to get all the achievments by myself

Magic hasn’t gotten stronger throughout the series (since it moved away from invulnerability and unblockable double to quadruple damage melee/ranged hits) but it has remained the only part of the triangle that can’t be blocked, while dealing area damage. The steady increasing amount of dudes these games started throwing at you at once, the more magic became dominant strategy.
Fable 1 will always be one of my favorite games of all time. I beat it at a REALLY young age (I think 12, if not younger) so it will always have a fond place in my heart
I also gotta mention, was online in Fable II one day and randomly some player gifted me 1,000,000 gold to purchase Fairfax Castle randomly out of the blue...
For me, there is only one Fable - Fable 1.

The sequels failed to understand what made it great. Microsoft purchased Lionhead post Fable 1's release. They pushed for accessibility and trends rather than perfecting what they had.

Was playing fable II for literally one day back in middle school(but for a solid # of hours). There was this completely useless tree portal in a village near the main town that would only open if you propose in front of it. After I did so with a random villager, I didnt want to be tied town/have him follow me around.. soo I just shot him with an arrow and the cops saw me !! 😠
They said I could either pay a fine or go get rid of some trolls in the main town. I didn't want to spend my hard earned coin I got from chopping wood for a half an hour, so I said I'd do the trolls option. Turns out because of my bad karma for shooting my husband, I couldnt leave the village because bandits blocked the bridge. I was effectively imprisoned in limbo and never got the chance to play again 😕
Idk if that was a glitch or there was another way to leave, but tbh still haunts me- I probably still carry that bad karma to this day.
LOL I never used the map in Fable 2. I didn't know it was actually functional.

Are you covering the elder scrolls games ever. They've arguably lost quality as time goes on.
skullkrusher1999 i mean, theres only really oblivion and skyrim to talk about. Oblivion was good if anything just super old whereas skyrim was good if you didnt care but was bad because it lacked true roleplay mechanics and depth and had streamlined kid friendly mechanics.
What's he going to add that the hundreds of other "Morrowind was better" video's have not already said? Oblivion was dumbed down for consoles, and the scaling was hilariously bad. Skyrim was an improvement mechanically not quite as dumbed down. But the story making you the legendary Dragonborn who kills Dragons from level 1 was wildly out of character for Elder Scrolls gameplay style. And juvenile compared to the deeper narrative of Morrowind.

I absolutely love Fable 2. It's my favorite of the three.... but I will admit headshots and charged magic were broken. They were still fun, but very broken.
If fable two didn't have a 10 year prison bull poop and a crap ending, it would be one of my favorite games

My favorite of fable 3’s many flaws is that there’s no animation for turning around so your character just pops into another direction
OH MY GOD IT'S THIS GAME! Oh god the memories, me and my brother used to play Fable 3 at 5-12 at night. We played Fable 3 to death, the last thing I remember was me and my brother in like a glowing field or something full of glowing stuff and my mom came in and told me and my brother to go eat dinner, we never played since. Now in present day, my brother is in the Marine Corps and it's my last year of school. Oh the times, how they have changed.
Still a legendary game, fable 2. As long as I don’t lose the hard disk I’ll have it forever.

Man those promises in Fable Uno were out of control. Scar a child and later he comes back to get you? Plant a seed and watch it grow into a tree? I mean I liked the two Fables I played well enough but fWAHAA
I swear I'm the only person who loved the sanctuary menu system in Fable 3.
Yeah cuz it fucking sucks spending an extra minute that adds up probally to an hour or more wasted by the time you beat the game
as someone who played this as a kid and fable one was my favorite game, it makes me so sad that people believe jack of blades was a lame boss fight. that fight along with the dragon will be a memory forever in my memory.
I will never forgive Fable 3 for villifying Reaver. He was a pirate and thief in 2, true, but likeable. In Fable 3, all that is gone.
You need to make it rain to get the "good" ending in Fable 3 yet you forgot to mention that in order to be bless by the good god in Fable 1, you have to make it rain until he bless you with a huge mace and a sip of the fountain of youth

Absolutely loved Fable 2 as a kid n played it all the time, and preordered Fable 3. I believed all of Peter Molymemes lies.
Played through the game twice as both good and evil and both the endgames were desolate wastelands. Depending on choices you make as king, there could be literally no NPCs left walking around to mess with.
Then I went back to my pre-order bonus house to make a big family, only to find out my big family cottage had a two-child LIMIT.
Never played again after that. 1 and 2 are still great tho.
You say fable anniversary looks better than fable 2, fable 2 came out in 2008, fable anniversary came out in 2014

People who don't like Fable 3 are overlooking everything over the game's awesomeness. I absolutely loved the female character for Fable 3, she looks amazing compared to the 2nd, the first didn't even have a female MC, and the hero just made weird and cringey expressions and reactions all the time. Fable 2 wasn't nearly as bad with this, but at least give the MC some kind of emotion during some scenes. This is where I love Fable 3. The characters actually have lines. Of speech. Sure there are a few weird expressions again, but I like having a talking MC, as it makes me feel like they're actually part of the story, and not just idling in the scene while being either unresponsive or just plain weird and cringey. Don't get me wrong, I like Fable, liked Fable 2 a lot, but I just loved Fable 3, and people always overlook the small things for just how great and fun it actually is. If you don't like it, go and make your own game and see how people criticize it. Thank you, and good day. Long Live the Queen!

Thank you! for mentioning the idiotic camera work, awful menus, and the supremely awkward glide walking that made the whole game feel laggy and on rails! my friends at the time of release weren't bothered by it....but I quit fable 2 before even getting to the first main quests on those problems alone. It felt so bad and was heartbreaken to not have my gripes recognized lol no clue how u cud play it 6 times.
Your complaints about Fable and it's subsystems has no ground because you can make the same argument about everything we do in real life. I believe that was the point to begin with. We all envision ourselves on some grand journey in life, but really, it doesn't matter because we find enjoyment in the small things like getting married or purchasing a house.
I don't need Fable 4, just let fable 2 and 3 come back to pc

How to make Fabe 4 good: do all the things Lionhead promised in 1-3, do a Lionhead homage, wrap fable up in a blanket of good writing and similar but overall better design

The only thing Fable 2 & 3 were missing was major boss fights. Everything else was great - this game wasn't supposed to be some super complex dark-souls level craziness. They kept it to as few buttons as possible on purpose, PM even mentioned it before Fable 2 was released if I rememeber right.
I just hope they don't make Fable 4 into an elder scrolls clone, it's one of the worst things they could do.
I hope so too especially since if they did it would be Skyrim. A game I already think is vastly overrated. As well as it voiding the feel of Fable even more than F2 and 3 already have.
Honestly if anyone took this kinda of critic attitude into these games i can see disliking them but they're just fun man
I’m kinda glad I played Fable 2 and 3 before the first game as a kid, because even the regular base Fable was a better game to me.
My personal opinion:
Fable = Complete Marketing Lie, but Still a Decent ARPG.
Fable 2 = Character Action with Light RPG Mechanics.
Fable 3 = We Don't Talk About That One.
Fable Journey = WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT ONE.
Fable Legends = An Idea that Never Came.
Fable 4 = A Shared Pipe-Dream Among Fans.

Okay weird question but I gotta ask: You ever play the Way of the Samurai games?
I ask because back when Fable was announced as Project Ego I had a friend who loved the WotS games and when he heard about Fable he described it to me as "Like Way of the Samurai but medival fantasy and like...better in every way!" ...WotS kinda wound up being the better Fable. THAT SAID please play 1 and/or 2 before the others. This was a series that had a bit of a struggle with the 7th generation and to make matters worse, the PC ports are by an incompetent studio called Ghost Light who are legendary for fucking things up. I don't entirely know how to get the PC version of WotS4 to even launch. That said, WotS4 is my favorite but I'd call it both the best and worst and weirdest entry. It's waaay goofier, gives you tons more options, but has the most bugs and has a GIGANTIC obvious flaw with the plot that's just embarrassing (you can't skip the fighting tournament no matter what).
ANYWAY the concept behind those games is you make a custom Samurai and wander into a town in conflict and then do whatever. The game has tons of choices that matter and multiple routes and endings but that's entirely because the games are small and short. They only take place in one town and only take like two or three hours to beat. Heck the first game even has perma-death which is why I never beat it (kept dying on the second to last fight and had to restart). It encourages replaying it over and over again. Combat feels weirdly similar to Bushido Blade and I love that you can steal weapons from enemies and get their movesets.
But yeah first game feels most true to the concept, second game has tons of quality of life improvements and upgrades, third game I barely played because I had a standard definition TV and couldn't read the text, fourth game is goofy as all heck and lets me do all sorts of dumb crap and I love it.
Yeah Fable Franchise was great. Flawed but great.

You wildly missed the mark on the decision making in the first fable. Your complaint was that the decisions weren’t moral dilemmas but instead we’re barebones and unrealistic. The weren’t supposed based on morals at all. The point was that it was a choice between good and evil and you could choose what you wanted to be. A hero praised by the people or a villain feared by the people. That’s the beauty of the first fable. You could be a super hero or a super villain
getting the good end in fable 3 is so easy... you do all the bad stuff you want (as long as it pays off moneywise), become a slumlord, dump all the gold you "earned" through rent in the treasury just before the end and the time you wrecked the orphanage to let the children starve to death in the gutter will be wiped from everyones minds

Physique is the one that makes you look ugly. For a female character, if you keep it at 2 or below you're fine.

The golden trail was amazing. It let me know where I was supposed to go so I could go explore everywhere else first.
It was similar to the lit up nav system in Dead Space which I used for the exact same thing. Go everywhere off the beaten path I could access at that point in time and continue main story stuff when I exhausted all other distractions.
This has just given me a very vivid memory of that gold trail having a lot of issues in the first game. I'm not complaining, I'm just remembering it kept making me go on this crazy ass loop and then kept back tracking. Then I would go back and it would have me go back the way I just came.

@@arturoherbert8786 I don't get how, it just told you where to go, in the first you just teleported to wherever you needed to go and it basically had the same thing because of the arrow on the mini map, it really does allow you to wander off without worrying of getting lost, I personally don't think that the mechanic did any harm

Had to dig deep to find someone saying something good about Fable 2. Kinda surprised me, it's by far my favorite one. I have a Fable 2 Guild Seal tattoo.
Fable 2 has always been my absolute favorite, to the point that my friends started referring to me as Bastian and my character as Atreyu. Lol. It'll always be my favorite.

I enjoyed 2 a lot. The atmosphere and combat was so satisfying. Villain started off good but fell flat by the end. I think I still enjoyed 1 a little better though
Biggest grin on my face when you got to the first sentence of Fable II. Like you, I've beaten it more times than any other game, and 100% each time. It was the first Fable I played, and is my all time favourite game to this day.
And similar to you, I couldn't possibly explain why. It's so janky and weird. But I don't give a shit, I love it.
Also on your note that spellweaving is broken in III, in trying to find interesting combos I found that aoe Vortex+Blades makes a new individual ring of blades summon and target each enemy caught in the blast. So you can make the most damaging target spell an aoe attack.
I think having that dog in the game when I really wanted one as a kid just basically made me love it for life hah

I still want to see Fable 2 on PC. Mainly to see the modding community patch the game and make it more Fable. Add actual armor, fix the way the character controls, maybe make your character look less freakish, get rid of the bad morality points from eating meat because some vegan must have snuck some extra lines of code or something. That would be nice.
i don't think you get bad morality for eating meat, only LIVE chicks which kind of makes sense.. your eating a living animal whole, thats pretty fucken brutal lmao

Yeah, eating a chick would give you evil points in Fable 1. Otherwise, you could eat all the meat you wanted, you just potentially get fat if your character wasn't active. Fable 2 wanted you to be a soy swilling vegan to be the goodest of heroes. It felt like a weird and passive-aggressive attempt to push an ideology on people.

I honestly loved the franchise, I remember putting at least a good chunk of time in the Xbox 1 fable and played a hell of a lot of Favle 2, but I can definitely agree Fable 3. The combat annoyed the hell out of me and had the random slow motion finisher when you didn’t even mean to, but it was fun making a choice for everyone to get drunk trying to save money lol

Yea the 2nd and 3rd just lacked the depth that the first game has as far as RPG systems were concerned. They definitely polished the game a good amount but I really wish they kept that old RPG system in tact :(

My favorite part about Fable 3 was carefully saving money and thinking I had a tonne of time left only for there to be a random time skip out of nowhere. In the end all my "careful planning" managed to do what fuck me sideways.
I absolutely love the world and lore of these games

@Ornate Orator The game needs the reboot. The world and humor is there but the story and game design are sadly terrible.
Really hoping if they're truly making a sequel with a new company that they go right back in time pre Hero of Oakvale to all the old heroes. It sounds like an really interesting story and then at least they have a good starting point.
The problem is the gamedevs being bought out by Microsoft. MS changed the game completely to make it more appealing to children and I fucking hate that.

There's a good chance it didn't. Lots of leaks suggest that Fable 4 is in development for next gen, though nothing official so take that with a grain of salt.
The lore of Fable is ironically depressing, ill say the most interesting lore piece for me was simply the “Fall of the Guild” that change/transition I found the most interesting to think about and to imagine.
I still have my physical copy of Fable: The Lost Chapter. Sweet sweet memories.
Fun Fact: in Fable 2 you can max out your character from the moment you upgrade your first ability.

@@itsyaboiChubbs Get your first ability upgrade. Make a henchmen character using a guest profile, making it so that your character receives 100% of experience. The guest character comes in as a copy of your character, ability wise. Sell their ability then make them quit. Use the experience you get from it to buy another ability. Rinse and repeat. Your character is maxed out within 10-15 minutes, before you even leave the Chamber of Fate.
While I'm on the topic, all 3 Fable games had infinite gold exploits too.
Now I want to see a speedrun of Fable 2, to see how that much that actually affects people trying to just end the game quickly.
I used this trick back in the day to get in the top 10 of the total xp leaderboards for Fable 2 (yeah that existed), only took me like 2 hours to get up there. Seems like a pretty massive oversight for a game centered around character progression.
Kingdome of amalur is what fable series wanted to be and more. I too loved fable series 1+2 more than 3 but KoA was like fable on roids and better.

S Moss you make a point. It’s not like people haven’t used things like puppets to convey mature themes. Considering the world of Fable is largely satirical in nature, it makes sense.

Yeah this is the thing I have to disagree with him the hardest on. I understand not liking an aesthetic, and not liking a subject matter, but not liking subject matter because of the aesthetic or vise versa is just ridiculously arbitrary.
I'd say that tonally Fable 2 is particularly awful with balancing the overbearingly """"silly"""" npcs and jokey aspects with its super serious main story, but tonal inconsistency is _completely_ different.
The aesthetics (including musically speaking) at least in Fable 1 are there to give an almost whimsical, fairytale feel while the game also indulges in really dark shit. Those things coming together like an awesome mixture of both the modern, family-friendly and the OG-hardcore fairytales. It's fookin' beautiful and genuinely clever if you ask me!

I've got mixed feelings on this video. On the one hand, I agree that the games didn't have the most interesting systems, and that a lot of the systems were pointless. On the other hand, I know why they were that way, and I like the redundancy of a lot of it. It's somewhat like Crysis in that way. The studio put as much random stuff in as they could. And while the third game isn't great it was still alright. The second game is still great, because you could interact with everyone. You never had to, you could just ignore everything but the required quests and some sidequests, but that was the beauty of it. You could be whoever you wanted to try to be. And the morality system helped with that. There were some quests like the one where a ghost asks you to make their ex-fiancee fall in love with you and break their heart. Some people really wanted to go either way, and that allowed you to chose a somewhat meaningful thing in the world. My final bit on the morality system, is the Temple of Shadows and the Temple of Light. You could drastically change the world based on who you chose to help, and that impacted the game in fun and interesting ways. I agree that the game was a bit ridiculous at points where it could have been more serious, but that was the charm of the series. The third game got too serious compared to the previous games. It still had it's fun bits, but it was much more serious than the others. And I think that is part of what lead to the downfall of the series and Lionhead.
I love fable and fable 2 the third one was very disappointing. And I too have completed the second fable many times.
I replayed all 3 recently, and the decisions thing was interesting, but it’s been a slide from decent to not interesting.

The whole point of the game isnt for it to be grey or morally ambigious though. Your not supposed to think, what should I do ,tough choice, like a game like witcher 3. Its supossed to be morally karma based, you play it like, im going to a good playthrough or I am going to do a evil playthrough. like how when your fully good you have a halo or like when your fully evil you are a literal demon with horns from your head, I dont think you understand the concept. The whole point is that it is ''fable'' between pure good and pure evil and the curiousity of seeing how your character changes from becoming more evil or good. Like the infamous games idk if u played those.
I agree, all of the games are made simply to have fun, in any of them, it allows you to be be a dick to everyone, or you can just play it normally and do the morally good things. Even in Fable 3 where you have to be king right after you just took over the kingdom solely because Logan is a dick, you can still be a dick of a king and that's HILARIOUS. I love all 3 games, and I think that Fable is the type of series that's not *supposed* to be looked at critically because lionhead didn't try to make objectively good games, they wanted to make games that you can dick around in for hours and have a fun time.
