    Love the videos guys, soo informative, I have a wee 16ft microplus 501 boat in Dixons marina Carrybridge. Me and my granda sleep over in it. Boating is such a lovely escape for me after my dad left us. And then took us to court. Love you guys and I cant wait for your next video!

      Hi Kim and thanks for your comment. It’s great that you have
      allies when you're going through tough times. You have two, your
      Grandad and your boat. (Being a Grandad myself I can confirm
      that we are full of wisdom!) We treasure that solace we find
      on our boat, and it’s a very welcome escape from all that life throws
      at us. Look after yourself and enjoy all those good times. H&M

    Hi Harry and Marion. I just recently found your great blog and I've been binge watching and following your story. I have a boat myself and this has cheered me up during this extremely trying time. Thanks for all the videos. Perhaps I might bump into yourselves this year on the Shannon. I came here as I am fitting a new solar system complete myself , so thanks for the tips. All the best, Martin

    Nice easy installation. I've fitted an inverter charger hybrid myself last year that also looks after the solar and yes theyre a great bit of kit. I would however look at a battery upgrade to get the most from the system. Best of luck with it all.

    I fitted the same inverter/charger this summer, also purchased in Euromotive. The price was surprisingly equivalent to what I could get online, and they had it in stock and were able to sort me out when I pulled into Carrick with a failed charger.
    A question...are you really able to manage a standard kettle and hairdryer with a 1600w inverter? If so, I'm plesantly surprised.
    Also, I fitted a battery cut-off on the positive from the battery and a circuit breaker on the shorepower AC input to the inverter. The battery switch is so you can turn off the battery supply to the inverter if you're working on things. This is important because it's easy to forget the inverter can electrocute you via the batteries even with shorepower disconnected.

    • @DriftwoodBoatBlog
      @DriftwoodBoatBlog  3 роки тому

      Hi Doug. Yes the inverter certainly does run the hairdryer. And it's quite a hefty hairdryer too. The kettle we used is a low amp caravan kettle but yes both work perfectly. My only concern is that it a hefty drain on the batteries. Ye Euromotive are a good crown to deal with, and the fact that they are convenient to the river is handy too.
      I like your idea about the additional cut-off switch. Might copy you! H&M

    Have to comment here as I have some major concerns about your set up. First thing are your batteries, please change these for proper leisure/deep cycle batteries otherwise you’ll pay some severe consequences. Any engine starter battery is not designed to be discharged slowly over time, they are designed to give high current over a short time, so starting an engine, powering a bow thruster and operating a windlass. The plates on a starter battery are much thinner which gives them this advantage. A leisure or deep cycle battery has much thicker plates and is designed to give a slow release of current over a much longer time so ideal for running the systems on your boat including an inverter and not good for any other application except in a emergency situation where you use them to jump start your engine once in a blue moon. I’ve seen starter batteries being used as leisure batteries explode in an engine bay.......it’s horrific. These starter batteries you have are also sealed, and this is the charging profile you should have selected on your Victron and disabled the equalisation charge cycle, this is VERY important. Your battery to battery connection links are far too small as well to be taking current of 160Amps. These should be 50mm2 minimum, 70mm2 is nice....same with that tiny negative cable from your shunt to the neg bus bar....far too small. Someone else also said about fitting an isolator switch in the positive DC line, this would be another great idea....a 200A marine rotary type is minimum for this. Fitting an inverter/charger isn’t really 100% straight forward as there is much to read and absorb, especially those Victron’s. Them and Mastervolt are the cream of marine power systems. You’ve spent all this money on the best here.....you now need to address your battery bank sooner rather than later. I’ve just got your best interests at heart here.

      Hi Metal Snapper, Thanks for your comment. While it's true that deep cycle batteries will offer more usable amp hours and are much more resistant to sulphation than my lead acid batteries. Truth is that I'm very careful never to allow them to discharge anywhere close to 50% and most often not even below 80%. So sulphation should not be an issue. There is no danger of the Multi causing my batteries to explode as the charger will go into float as soon as the batteries are fully charged. I will be upgrading the batteries and do plan to replace them with AGM or possibly Lithium in the future.
      My Multiplus was programmed to rum with lead acid from day one. I will have a look at the battery terminal cables and I probably will have to upgrade them as well. Thanks for your input though, it's always good to get another point of view. 👍
