    Well
Thank you for this video James.
Followed it to assemble mine this morning.
Definitely took more than 15 minutes for me though, but I'm guessing a lot easier than some that need a lot more assembly.
Very well packaged and they give you everything including a screwdriver! And the box with all the bits in that are all labelled up, excellent.
One slight bit that threw me, the Genmitsu on the panel where the spindle is was upside down!
Only 4 screws to undo to switch it round though.
Thank you for all your videos

The 4040-XE had 2 advantages, the inbuilt offline controller and stronger stepper motors. However it is now becoming an older machine so if I had to pick I would lean more towards a newer machine such as this

Hi James, very glad to have seen your review after stumbling upon Genmitsu on Amazon. I had been eyeing the OneFinity CNC and I'm glad to have found this "Mini-finity" as you call it, as it may perhaps be more fitting to my projects (though the bigger bed of OneFinity will ultimately gain me more output, but that's at 5 times the cost). Given that it uses steel tubes, I assume then if I find longer tubes, I can make the Genmitsu 4040 support an even larger bed, yeah? I think 24x24 would be my goal.

    • @JamesDeanDesigns
      @JamesDeanDesigns  Рік тому +1

Since making this I have found out Sainsmart are working on an extension, likely to me 400x800. Yes in theory you could extend it yourself. You would need the tube and a longer lead screw for each axis. Probably have to extend a few wires as well

@@JamesDeanDesigns Oh, so like the extension kit for the PROVerXL 4030. Do you know whether they'll sell it as a standalone 4040 Pro product (maybe called ProXL) or is it only as an upgrade path?
400x800 is a lot bigger compared to the ProVerXL 4030's upgrade of 400x400. I can only assume the price then would be double of what they currently offer now for the retail price of the 4040 Pro

Not on the Y axis. The only time I really saw it on the X axis was when doing 5mm deep cut but there was a lot of pressure for obvious reasons. They probably could have used thicker steel tubes but equally then the weight goes up, the price goes up etc.

Hi James. I know you are at a stage with your channel that doing reviews are a good idea. What I would like, as many others would, is for you to decide on and then use some quantitative and qualitative assessments which you can do. This would mean that each cnc can be compared with at least a similar price range or similar specification machines. As the assessments are not a personal opinion you should be then be telling the manufacturers what your standard assessments are. By continuing your current “everything is really nice “ “this is not a good thing “ . As I am trying to figure out what Cnc to buy I come away none the wiser in spite of watching all your builds/reviews/in-depth videos. I love your work but now you are becoming the goto channel for Cnc content I think a more scientific approach with a downloadable file (for Patreon) to use as a comparison between Cnc S to find what’s right for you.

@@JamesDeanDesigns I heard about the extension kit as well.
Not sure what to do Ideally I want 600x600 but the price of the 4030 upgraded to 600x600 is at the point where I could do one of the various bees or lead machines out there. I still may try one of these and diy some extensions. I believe I could easily strengthen the X gantry too.
Hard choice to make Ive 3d printed for years and converted one into a very weak cnc and I really want to get something better and really get into it but for a lot of the things I have in mind I need a bit more space. Would not mind getting a small super stout unit for aluminum though the 3020 looks good for that. The 6050 looks amazing but at that price I would need at least 600x600 since Id want to do both wood and aluminum on it. I think extending that one would be possible too but the cost to do that would make it kind of foolish to do.
Other optiona are to go up to one of the more pro machines out there and im not sure im ready for that kind of investment. Or try one of the 6060s built the same way as this but with 3 tubes on the X axis that are popping up.
      Ah decisions decisions

James, i am looking at the sainsmart 4040 verus the fox alien 4040. I need to clear up one point. I currently have a 3018 which is screw driven and have had little or no problem with the movement portion of the machine. It does limit you due to the smaller size. I am very comfortable with a screw driven machine. I worry about a belt driven machine ( maybe unnecessary ). I do some laser work but currently olny have a 2.5 ( optical) laser. My plans are to buy the machine and ad a 40 watt laser later. If you could shed some light on best chose for me i would appreciate appreciate it.

A great entry for someone who maybe wants to get a onefinity later. Excellent entry machine for someone who wants to start out, learn, then make some money for a full on onefinity setup. this is coming from someone who has a stepcraft d840 and a shapeoko pro xl. The new versions (stepcraft3) are fantastic upgrades over mine (stepcraft2). IF you are not sure, I think it is worth ordering a Genmitsu product on Amazon Prime for the return policy “just in case”. Having not had hands on it, yet being very, very displeased when I tried out the 3020 Pro Max (completely different machine, this one in James’ video looks way better), I was glad I got it Prime so I could send it back. It is worth a try as long as you have peace of mind with a return policy. I do not know how good home-base in Europe stepcraft support/sales people are, but here in the states, the US headquarters has done very well by me many times, they will talk on the phone & help you with anything that is confusing or whatever. Keep in mind the cost of the stepcraft includes Vectric Vcarve Pro & UCCNC hardware/software, so that is one reason it costs a bit more, those are expensive on their own.

I’m torn between this and the 4030. Main reason for wanting the 4030 is due to the fact that I can upgrade the workarea if need be. I’m used to a 30”x30” area from the Shapoko. But I hardly use that much space and I still have access to it at my local makespace should I need it. 90% of my projects are done on the workarea of this maschine. But I want a rugged machine that grows with me as I get more advanced. Currently not doing any 3D work, but plan to in the future. Is the 4030 worth the extra $350? Especially since I read here in the comments that they are working on extensions for this machine. I have to say I don’t do any metal work. Only wood. Hardwoods primarily such as maple and walnut.

The 4030 is a more ridged and powerful machine so yes it is worth the extra. The extension kit for this is likely to be 400 x 800 but will still be with Nema 17 motors. The pricing generally gives it away of which is the better machine, the 4040 is still go but likely to have to go at slower speeds than the 4030

I can't seem to find a lot of information on how to get from an STL file to the file format needed for the 4040 Pro, or at least in a way that I can understand it LOL I have basically a trial version of Fusion 360, and I can get to the point where I can select tools and such, and tell it to generate a tool path, it hangs at like 91%, and I've left it to run for well over 12 hours and it never moves past that point. Does anyone have experience with creating an STL and getting it into the Genmitsu file format so I can try testing my design in the machine? Or an actual step through on settings and such that are needed to convert it? You'd think since I work in IT and have experience in a myriad of different technologies both hardware and software I'd be able to figure this out, but I'm stumped, and the 4040 Pro right now is a dust collector in our garage.

Nice and thorough review, and a nice looking machine. I think I still hanker after something that can do 4ft boards though. It is hard to tell from the photo but it looks like this is still using the notorious WCH serial chip. Do you have to install WCH drivers for this machine ? These drive me crazy. I thoroughly disapprove of the shady practices of CP & FTDI but as much as I want to like WCH, sadly my Win10 laptop just loses sync with WCH chips on a long run and this is widely reported on the interwebs as "a known issue with no fix". B.T.W there is no 'e' in hors.

You have to install 1 driver (CH340SER) to make the machine work, but I've never had the issues you mention and I'm also on win 10, ran jobs for over 8 hours without a hitch. But as I say, when it comes to chips and circuits, I'm out of my depths

@@JamesDeanDesigns Yeah, that's the WCH. I don't know why a machine costing hundreds of pounds needs to make the few pence saving. Not everyone sees the issue, maybe the laptop I was using was a bit under-powered. But I took to using Candle on a Raspberry Pi 4 and I've not seen it since. Another thing that works is to get an FTDI adapter and connect the serial to the "offline controller" port ... if you can find the pin-out of that connector (which I founder harder than I expected).

Well it was as German brand and since view years it has expanded to America.
It's a pretty big company now in Germany as well as in America. Or maybe you can test a slightly cheaper machine from stepcraft like the d420 or d600 or d840.

@@JamesDeanDesigns hi James have you had any issues with the machine Other than user error?
This morning i was running a job and the machine turned off and on three or four times repeatedly after running for about 45 mins Resulting in the job being out of sync.I stopped switched it off and left it for an hour. As the blue light would not come back on. Came back to it. I have run the programme again and it is still going as i’m typing. What on earth could have caused this? I have emailed sainsmart just to let them know and to see what they say.
Also how hot do the stepper motors get? The z motor is really hot to the touch. my spindle housing bushes have started to fail already. Sainsmart have sent me a new one however it was for the prover not the Pro. So i’m currently waiting for them to fix this. The reason for them starting to fail could be due to a few massive mistakes/crashes on my part.
As you are aware i upgrade to the 500watt spindle (which snapped in half) and i am currently using the 24v 20000 spindle you did a video a while back. I don’t really want to get a router just yet. However i can see that upgrade coming shortly. Another cracking video and very informative as usual. Since upgrading the spindle i have noticed that the bed does not seem to flex or vibrate as mush as it did with the stock spindle. When i come to changing the boards i will look at adding that extra piece to help stabilise it.

AT NO POINT DO I SAY IT COMES WITH A MAKITA. What I say about half way through the video AFTER SHOWING THE KIT SPINDLE is that the machine benefits from being upgraded to something more powerful. A router can be as cheap as $50 and nearly 10 times more powerful than the kit spindle so well worth considering as part if the overall purchase

would you recommend this machine for engraving on aluminium or stainless steel sheets about 3mm thick?

    • @JamesDeanDesigns
      @JamesDeanDesigns  3 місяці тому +1

I'll start by saying these machines are not designed for metal but in some cases they can do it. If your goal is metal all or most of the time then look at something like the 3030 Pro Max or stronger. If your goal is wood with a bit of metal then this may work for you. Aluminium it will do, lightly engraving steel is possible but may not be as clean as some more rigid machines
