- Vientiane, Laos - the stunning Buddhist temples of Vientiane. Let's travel to Laos and let's visit the beautiful city of Vientiane, the capital of Laos, which houses a great number of buddhist temples. in Vientiane, many buddhist temples were built in the 16th century when King Setthathirath had made the town the new capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. Unfortunately, most were destroyed by invaders of Siam when their armies looted and burned the city in 1827. In this video we are going to visit some of the remaining Buddhist temples in Vientiane and some that have been painfully restored over the last few decades.
Vientiane, Laos' national capital, mixes French-colonial architecture with Buddhist temples such as the golden, 16th-century Pha That Luang, which is a national symbol. Along broad boulevards and tree-lined streets are many notable shrines including Wat Si Saket, which features thousands of Buddha images, and Wat Si Muang, built atop a Hindu shrine.

To all my friends from around the world: I had a very difficult time videotaping these beautiful temples.. I was using a brand new SAMSUNG camera which was broken as soon as I took it out of the box.. It is not the camera shaking that you see here, it is the camera constantly trying to focus in and out.. From over 30 minutes of videos I was able to save only the 5 minutes that you see here.. The SAMSUNG camera was soon replaced by a SONY camera and I will always use SONY equipment, very reliable... Thank you!!
I remember visiting the Buddhist temple in Tianmu Taiwan many times when I lived there summer '59 to summer '61. For this 6th grade American boy it was magical, unlike anything I had ever seen before, all colorful with tall bright red (the Chinese happy color) columns at the entrance. I watched how the Taiwanese lit punk and placed it in sand jars in front of the huge golden statue of Buddha, so I did the same. I was always treated with kindness and respect in that gentle place.
