Just because a piece of furniture isn't solid wood doesn't mean it's not worthy of a makeover. These plastic night stands needed a facelift. Sometimes, these more affordable options make more sense at the time, especially with the rising cost of used furniture.
Paint is an awesome way to update these non wood or partial wood pieces, and make them your own. ❤️

I'm not disappointed in the slightest. I took something bound for the garbage, revamped them, and donated them to a charity where they will be auctioned off to raise money for adults with special needs. My entire point of having this channel is to cover MULTIPLE styles of furniture, which will appeal (or clearly not) to multiple people. Not to constantly have the most trashed piece of crap I can find in hopes of getting a million likes. This has ALWAYS been my M.O. and that is not going to change. I don't feel compelled to apologize for your disappointment, as this video served a purpose, and considering so many folks who have commented that this will help them and those who can't afford fine wooden furniture, to me, that's a win. But I do hope you stick around because there's bound to be something you like in the future.

@@TranscendFurnitureGallery Hi (again), Good for you. You do you, and keep to your purpose in making the videos. As all the time so far, I like what you do. And that's including the bunny intermission and updates on the residing cats.
I like that this channel is for people like me that will (most likely) never make over, or possibly up (?), an old piece of furniture. At the same time you cater to people who might want to fix up something they got from the charity shop, and these same videos might possibly give them the courage to do that too. Thank you so much for the videos you create for us. Yours, Ann

Angie: It is a pleasure to hear someone speak my language. Many of the landfills are already filled and closed. This is a big problem and has been for sometime. These 70’s nightstands are better looking now than they were when they were new. Much improved! Being an interior designer in the SF Bay Area, I have always used recycling and reusing in my clients environments. I have done several fundraisers for non-profits show casing just this new approach to designing rooms. There are several pictures of these showcases on my website. Love what you’re doing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with all plastic, like you said, and because of you and some of the other refinishers, I actually went to my local Habitat for Humanity Restore and found an adorable little pine board bookshelf for my bedroom! I spent 19$ on it instead of spending 75$ or more on a similar style, new. My roomie went with me and grabbed a nice nightstand for 10$, too! ... and he got the cute cashier/stock boy's number. 😁

My apartment is populated by MANY "free-cycled" street finds.
Lamp, side table, chaise lounge (it was almost new, but had one small rip in a tufted upholstery... luckily a seam, and a 5 minute fix).
I am working on an old, ornate mirror that just needs some detail replacement (using miliput to recreate, and a "dremel" tool to fine tune)...
I recently rescued a lovely painting that was left on the side of the road.
Heck, my toaster oven was a porch offering, and just needed a replacement tray, and a bit of a cleaning.

I love what you did with these nightstands, and I love that you used the original hardware. It’s so much more interesting than anything you can buy today. Great job on the furniture and an excellent message for the world!

They absolutely look better afterwards and I have no doubt that to the right person they're beautiful and just the thing they wanted.
I'm especially glad you kept the old hardware because it mimics the design on the "carvings" and with your colour coat those swirls come out much cleaner and more as a design element, rather than a swirly thing on top of the inherent swirliness of the faux wood grain.
Basically you toned down the busy-ness of it all, and that helps so much!
This also functions as a great tutorial/inspiration for those of us who may be limited in our means - or even just lack confidence to tackle something more expensive or universally valued for fear of ruining it.
Thank you greatly for all your videos, but particularly for the recurring message about the imperative to value what we have more and make the most of what's already there.

I grew up in a family that let's say struggled a bit with money. This is the sort of stuff we would still have stretched to afford and would have considered "rich people" furniture. It warms my heart that you also take this kind of furniture seriously, because I still struggle now at the age of nearly 60 with the mentality my childhood created, that I shouldn't have "nice things" because they aren't for people like us.

I think this was one of my favorites. I'm the only one in my family that likes to upcycle, recycle, etc. furniture. I actually LOVE to bargin shop at thrift stores and such. One woman's trash is another woman's treasure. I have two end tables that are similar, and they make great storage areas in my office. Now I know how I can give them a makeover! Great video!! Thank you!

Love it. Can you incorporate your imaginative and unique tattoo-inspired designs into these pieces? Make these a 'signature' piece and move them into functional art. I always love to see you adding that flare, like taking the bronze on the handles and moving that into the piece.

I remember furniture like that, not my style either. However, painting them really made a huge difference. I describe that stuff as visually abusive with all the "wood" texture and scrolls. By taking away all the visual business of the varied "wood" grain and color, it is way more visually clean. Obviously, that style is not for everyone but it definitely doesn't need to be thrown away anymore. I agree that keeping the hardware was the way to go. Even updated it is always going to be an ornate style of furniture so keeping the hardware acknowledged that.

I love what you did with the furniture, I've been collecting old pieces that I find on the road, and most need a little cleaning or fixing.
The fact that you are teaching people to stop being wasteful and learn to adapt furniture to the person's style is great. I can say 70% of what own has been salvaged items. I use them, and when I get bored bored list them and sell those items. They are given another life.❤

I so agree with you about stopping just throwing away furniture. You turned these into a really nice set. When I was young (so many years ago lol). It was a thing to find old furniture and fix it up. You couldn't buy things on time besides cars and houses. So people who got new furniture would put the old stuff out in front of their houses with "For Free" signs on them and they would go pretty fast. We didn't have the internet but we did have the library that had books on fixing up furniture from repairing to reupholstering and every thing in between. Thank you for showing up what can be done as a novice. Hope this finds you and yours happy and healthy.

I didn't watch this for a whole week because the thumbnail made me think, "why?" But I finally gave in & I'm glad I did. You took something I really disliked and made them...tolerable, and by the reveal, I was even trying to think of furniture I'd put with them that would bring some beauty to my home if that was what I had to work with. Thank you for your perspective. You are an inspiration.

The end result has very much a Far East feel to me. Beautiful! Now I'm really missing the good old days of spring cleaning season, when people would leave their old furniture out on the side of the road in the spring to be hauled away, and those of us with trucks and energy would go around during the night 'shopping' amongst the pieces. There were so many that I never gave a 2nd glance to at the time because of that very mindset you mentioned. I can't go back to that time to get those pieces; but, thanks to you, I know what to do should I get another chance at one of them. Your videos are an inspiration and an education.

What a great human interest service you are providing with this type of video. You are right that many will challenge your decision to update this type of furniture, but a lot of people right now have limited funds and need to know how to live with things they might not pick if they were in different circumstances. Great job, great compassion for the less fortunate among us. Loved your update of these chests.

Wow! I would have never thought those were made of plastic. I know a lot of the commenters said things like they wouldn't have those pieces in their home, but I would! I look for functionality and not whether or not something is "high-end." In fact, I wouldn't even know "high-end" from "cheap" most of the time. What I do know is I get what I need when I can afford it. On a fixed income, functionality and affordability are what matters... not having the most expensive, "high-end" furniture in the neighborhood.
I would have purchased these drawers - even in their original style - simply for the personal nostalgic value. They look similar to furniture we had when I was growing up, except ours was actually made from wood. The benefit of the faux wood, though, is the cabinets would be much easier to move around than heavy furniture. As a person who lives alone, this is also important. Though I'm more than capable (thankfully) of moving heavy furniture around, alone, it's not my favorite thing to do. So finding something easily moveable that I can use for storage is a bonus.
Anyway I loved the final result of the drawers... especially the way you transformed the hardware! Now, if you could come up with a way to transform the cheap plastic storage bins with drawers from Walmart like this, it would be really helpful for a lot of people. However, I'm sure that's asking for the impossible! Lol 🤠

These turned out super cute! And you're so right about the way we (culturally) just toss things out that we don't value because they don't fit some largely arbitrary idea of what constitutes "valuable" and in the meantime we're tossing all that into the environment and wasting our time and money. Plus! Cheaper and more accessible pieces allow us to experiment in ways like this and add more personality and self-expression into our spaces. I really really respect the work you do and I love these little night stands.

I completely agree with Angie, so many things are perfectly fit for purpose and with a little effort can be appreciated again by someone new! Not every piece of furniture is going to be a solid wood historical masterpiece, and it doesn't need to be. Knowing how to approach working with cheaper materials is really bloody helpful! Great work, and thanks Angie

These are gorgeous!!! I might change the hardware,at least to check how it looks.
You are so right about this “throw away”world.
I admit in my youth,I was not at all concerned about saving anything.
I save everything that I can now. All glass jars, they are great for storing “things” I also use them to make crafts. I also (in honor of my great grandparents) save rubber bands😊,scraps of fabric, twist ties
,any sturdy string. I also cut up old worn out sheets, some into strips (can use as rope to tie bundles of things)some in rectangles to use as hankies for working outside in this miserable heat. I even wash plastic peanut butter jars … I use them for old cooking oil that I don’t want “loose” in my trash. If we put our minds to it,there would be a lot less garbage to put into dumps.
